Skipping

Postby MaxJenius on Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:56 am

Well, Skipping is sort of halfway between running and hopping. Why we don't do it as adults.

1: More stress on the ankles, and more chance of tripping causing damage to other things.
2: Not as fast as actually running.
3: Akin to #1, not very helpful if you are carrying things. Too much jarring action.

I can respond to pretty much every thing on this list with "you're doing it wrong."

And we don't really hop as adults, either. Let's all hop today.

Skipping is the same as the actions a four-legged creature uses for its back legs in one of its more efficient means of motion. It is not nearly as efficient for a two-legged creature, as I can attest from my own childhood when I was quite determined to show it superior, but had to acknowledge that walking was better.
We have inherited this motion pattern from our four-legged ancestors and so skip as children until we learn better.

Hmm.. I skip occasionally, when no one's watching. Hopping, not so much.

I'd like to see a race between a skipper and a runner.... and I'd also like to see someone try to skip a marathon without breaking their ankles.

Oh, and try to skip downhill... I did that... once... to make matters worse, I did it in flip flops... Needless to say I got a close look at the concrete driveway.
