Yes, Joel is supposed to be a sympathetic character. Republicans aren't evil. But social conservatives are!

I don't think Joel is really a hardcore, hardheaded Republican. He doesn't seem to go on about reducing taxes, deregulation or welfare cheats. I say that his core values are the christian love and forgiveness, as seen by the quick forgiveness of his sister and his ability to put up with Damian and Ted. His initial reaction to Beefsteak was, unfortunately, programming due to the close minded aspects of christianity. This contrasts with Damian who is free from conflicts but an unloving, unforgiving jerk.

I honestly don't think Damian is all that unloving or unforgiving, personally. I can honestly say I don't know (or know OF) any liberals who are complete insensitive assholes. I think emotional sensitivity and compassion is what drives people to the left in the first place.

Maybe he just needs a hug. HEY BEEFSTEAK, ARE YOU LISTENING?

Damian is just an ass. If Kerry had won, I suspect he'd be bitching about how Kerry is doing things.
