What was the name of the guy who built himself a house filled with death traps and stuff?
I think he had like the same letter for his initials... like H.H.H. or something...
I'd have to pick him, although some to think of it, i don't know if he even qualifies as a serial killer...
Hm......
My second pick would be the wolverines.
------------------

Definitely David Berkowitz. And you actually have to feel sort of bad for this guy. He thought his neighbor's dog was satan and was trying to tell him to kill people. Now, that's pretty messed up, and some people say bad enough. But, when it got to the point where he wanted to stop killing for Satan, he walks over and shoots the dog point blank in the face. Three weeks later, he finds out THE DOG LIVED. Now, if you're disfunctional enough to think that your neighbor's dog is satan, and you shoot said dog in the face, and it DOESN'T DIE, don't you think you'd go off the deep end a bit too? But fortunately, he's a Born Again! http://www.inetworld.net/hutrcc/david.htm
-=ConcreteLobotomy=-

I actually prefer 'Saucy Jack' to Mr. Fish, but the Ripper was already taken, and I didn't want to seem cliche. But fuck it, it's my message board.
Jack the Ripper. He wasn't a serial killer, but my favorite scary guy is Spring-Heeled Jack, mostly because after he stopped showing up, they wrote books about him and turned him into a superhero.
------------------

Has to be Harold Shipman. Over 25 years killed over 400 women and only got caught on what was to be his final one because he tried to swindle some money out of her will. And he only did that because his wife made him.

Lesson to be learnt from all of this: If you're going to be a serial killer, don't marry. Or at least don't tell her you're one.

Personally, since he was a doctor, I think he should have pleaded Gross Negligence to the courts.

However, may I humbly submit that the infamous duo of Burke (no, not that one) and Hare may also be considered classics, in their way, and actually predate the Ripper by 60 years. They simply haven't received quite as much attention by the popular media.
Butch would probably consider the pair sell-outs, however, as William Burke and William Hare (tenant and landlord in an Edinburgh lodging house) performed their activities as a profitable sideline. During this period, anatomy schools were in need of human specimens for dissection. After successfully selling the remains of a naturally deceased lodger to a certain Dr. Knox for medical research, they decided to increase their profits by proceeding to murder assorted passersby and lodgers (with Burke smothering the unfortunates). The doctor asked no questions, but ultimately encouraged them by offering between 8 and 10 pounds or so per corpse (depending on the season.) In the end, no less than 16 people were dispatched between the falls of 1827 and 1828, before one of the "specimens" was discovered prior to delivery in. There was insufficient evidence, however, as asphyxiation was then undetectable as a murder method. However, Hare turned King's evidence, and Burke was hung in 1829, and ironically, his body donated for medical research. Due to the method used, the now archaic verb "burke" arose as a synonym for asphyxiation. Not as glamorous as the Ripper perhaps (especially as it's known beyond doubt exactly who Burke and Hare were), but they still hold a certain interest in some circles today, and are ranked as something akin to folk heroes in Scotland.
If a body needs a body, just call Burke and Hare!

[/B]

actually it was part of the sentence, that his body be dissected at a public lecture at the university; this attracted such huge crowds that the body was actually placed on view beforehand. the lecture was done by a prof. munro. oddly enough, burke & hare had intended to sell the first body to prof. munro, but they asked directions of one of dr. knox's students, who sent them to knox instead. (the organization of medical schools in those days seems to have been quite odd; lecturers i think were paid directly by the students, who in turn became sort of 'followers'; there was considerable rivalry between different sets of 'followers', and much competition for corpses. as i recall, knox and munro were particular rivals.) although dr. knox was never prosecuted, he clearly realized that the bodies were suspicious, and was probably a sort of co-conspiritor; his ready supply of bodies increased his appeal to students. one wonders if prof. munro would have responded any differently, had b&h found him first.
hare and both wives disappeared after the trial, and there are many stories of what became of them (one has hare, recognized by an angry mob, blinded by being thrown into a lime pit and ending his days as a beggar) - so there is some element of mystery.
as an additional bonus, b & h's final murder was committed on halloween (and burke was convicted christmas day - so they are criminals for all manner of holidays)
this has got me thinking of another serial killer - unfortunately i can't remember her name. she was of (i think) norwegian extraction, and had a farm in wisconsin (i think) around the 1880's. she was a widow (her husband had somehow been hit in the head with a flatiron), and sent in personal ads to matrimonial magazines, soliciting middle-aged gentlemen of scandinavian origins to come help her pay off the mortgage on her farm. despite sending them her picture (she was a large sturdy woman, with a rather harrowingly grim cast of features), she enticed a number of such men to pack up their life savings, and come to her aid. don't know how she did them in -- but disposing of the corpses, as i recall, involved boiling them down and feeding the remains to the pigs. she managed to escape the police, being warned by their inquiries when the brother of one of her victims started to press for an investigation of his brother's disappearance - so no idea how many victims she had, whether she resumed activities in a new location, or what ultimately happened to her.
so you see, lee, not all of them are mentally unbalanced - some are just entrepreneurs.

------------------

i would think so = just from sheer volume. but i guess it depends on how you define serial killer - www.dictionary.com defines it as: "A person who attacks and kills victims one by one in a series of incidents" - this would rule out vlad, as he did mass impalements. (and also butch - i seem to recall he's done some multiple victim things) if you consider a serial killer as one who kills compulsively, for their own twisted reasons, this would include both vlad and liz (altho it would throw out my entrepreneurs).
so what _is_ the official definition?
------------------
