http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/well_drink

I think this is a fairly universal (countryversal?) term in America at least, but probably not in other countries.

Heh. My older brother (who has spent FAR more time in bars then I have) asked me to explain the same comic... Freaky what knowledge one picks up.

No it doesn't.

I was 'that guy' long before this comic.

Not helping matters, though.....

Funny... The whiteboard in my cube says "Be 'That Guy'!"

If "that guy" is the guy that thinks that "well drinks" is a brand, then no, I am not that guy.

For other definitions of "that guy", I'm that guy.

True, you did say you were the one who explained it to your brother.

So, which "that guy" are you then? The one that doesn't call? The one that wears plaid with stripes? The one that writes "Be 'That Guy'" on a whiteboard in his cubicle?

I'm the guy who:

- Writes "Do Not Write On Glass" on the glass part of the cube partition.
- Bitches incessantly about the "white" noise generators, because they just sound like bad static-y speakers to me. Directly above my head.
- gets pedantic about stupid **** in java.
- re-writes sections of the code after 2nd alpha because it pisses me off.
- Generally has to be "That Guy" whenever someone says "Don't be that guy".

(I'm also the guy who can't remember what localized definition of "that guy" was when I was told to stop being "that guy".)

-When two people are talking, a third comes up and asks who they are talking about, and after the explination, the third says in a hushed tone of awe and fear "Oh, that guy...."
-The one whom few know his name, but everyone know who you're talking about when you describe him.

BTW, I'd argue that even if I didn't know what a well drink was, I wouldn't be that guy. I might be the guy who asks the bartender what a well drink was, or the guy who just grunts and pretends he knows and says something equally stupid... but I wouldn't be the guy who was wearing a baseball cap backwards while loudly and enthusiastically demanding the cheapest drink in the bar.

And I would never say "Woot" to a stranger un-ironically.

(PS... Considering what "Montezuma's Revenge" is, I *don't* want his grievance, or a drink called that. (but if I was a bartender, I would make a mudslide w/ tequila, and call it that.)

Thanks. Never heard it before in 20 years of drinking in England.

In mitigation, when it's my round, everyone gets a pint of Harvey's. If they don't want it, I'll happily help them out.

I wonder sometimes if I should include annotations for non-US readers sometimes. But I get an instinctive icky feeling any time I have to do anything that feels like explaining a joke (even if the joke is nigh impossible to get if you're not American). I often think, "Well, the industrious ones can always do a Google search..."

Actually, understanding Nukees' jokes often requires a Google search no matter what your nationality. It's probably a bit much to ask of the casual reader, isn't it? Well, I've been doing it longer than xkcd has, and I ain't stopping.

BTW, the "well" vodka at Blake's is just called "Montezuma's." I always made a bad correlation with that...
