I still think it's an embarrassing scar on American cinema history that its first blockbuster epic is a racist apologue that nearly single-handedly jumpstarted the KKK. (Which in those days looked like a fun and romantic place to get away from the drudgery of everyday life.) THEN of course Griffith gets upset that he's accused of intolerance (not a good old Southern bwah, no suh!) and so makes the incredible bomb of the same name just afterwards. I think it's poetic justice, really; Griffith just didn't understand how wrongheaded his message was.
It's true, Griffith definitely knew more about how to use cinema than his contemporaries, and he did have a profound influence on a couple of generations of filmmakers, but think about it. Who uses the iris anymore? Not that we shouldn't have used it-- we could iris away from Pauly Shore and Brendan Fraser whenever necessary.
------------------

(Snip)

Racist? EVERYONE was racist in those days. If it wasn't the Negro it was the Chinese or the Mexican or the Jew or the Irish. Even when the mistreatment wasn't racist, it was ageist or against fatties or the crosseyed or someone who was a convenient foil for the hero.
It's a shame NOW but just humor back then. Wring your hands and weep if you will but acknowledge that their behavior was consistant with that of their contemporaries.
Not everyone was a blubbering reformer. We had to wait for modern times for that boob! A moviemaker who wanted to survive and thrive entertained--he didn't preach!
