I did some rummaging and found an old post of mine where I'd asked how to pronounce Kuehner. How in the heck does "UE" develop a "EE" sound?

I see koo-ner. Or cue-ner. Or even kway-ner. But keener? Nuh uh, I don't see that.

Yeah, it's a strange one. It's a lifetime of correcting people.

My theory on the whole thing: Of course the proper German pronunciation would be CUE-ner. I feel reasonably certain that the KEE-ner thing was adopted sometime in the late 30s-early 40s when it might have been more desirable to not have a German-sounding name. Some in the family changed the spelling to reflect how we'd like it pronounced.

I personally don't care. I haven't 'corrected' anyone on the pronunciation in years. That makes my Dad mad, too. :-)
