This was a long time coming, but I finally threw it together tonight (I know that several people had asked for this many months ago):
http://www.engsoc.org/~jphillip/avalon/avalonlogo-highres.jpg
260 kB.
JOSH.

I said I'd be back with a story; it's about 2/3 done...
I'm no good at drawing, and need a hi-res version of the Avalon logo for the cover -- should I ever actually print it. I'd probably use the logo above, since it isn't cropped at the edges, but I can't Photoshop the words "message forum" out. I don't even have Photoshop or a decent image editor.
So... Anyone who's got a hi-res Avalon logo, send it over. You get full credit when the story is finished. Promise.
Love it, Josh! Keep it up!
--BigMal27, the Insane/Paranoid/Depressed Avalon Addict
P.S. I wonder what this year's party at Alison's will reveal?

Josh, it wasn't that important, but many many thanks!
"Master [Josh], what is thy bidding?"

While on the topic of the Avalon logo, I've been wondering what font is used in it, I can't remember seeing the distinctive serif on the L anywhere else (and now that I've seen it up close, the lack of hard corners and slight curve to the serifs add further distinctivenes)

Gotcha' covered...
(Josh, please don't hurt me for giving away the secret.)
From my 19MB archive of TrueType fonts, I found that Goudy Old Style is the closest match. Go here to get GOS, GOS bold and GOS italic (all TTF) in a nice ZIP file.
TRICK 1: Use GOS plain -- not bold.
TRICK 2: DON'T KERN character pairs. This may make the AVA look cool, but it won't match right.
TRICK 3: You may have to play with expanding/condensing the characters to get it to match perfectly.
When I put the logo in MSWord, GOS @ 48pt was a perfect fit when used with 0.5pt expansion (that's 1/144 inch extra space per character).
Ain't graphic espianage-- I mean design fun?

Geocities is making me mad... Stupid "no referring" rule...
Okay, you want the fonts, you send me (via the "e-mail me" button above) an e-mail, and I'll send them to you.
It's the little things that make you wish you owned your own FTP server...
--BigMal27

Good call, BigMal. :-) I'll point out, though, that I didn't modify the character spacing at all in Corel Photo-Paint. So perhaps it just behaves differently than Word.
JOSH.
------------------

1) Thanks for the Geocities note, folks. I'll have a nice download page when my story is finished. I'm putting it up as-is Word 97/2000 (with fonts embedded, but available just in case), and chapter-by-chapter HTML. I'm pulling a Josh and waiting for the actual hockey game to occur before I write the last parts, for that touch of realism.
2) I meant nothing of the kind when reffering to logos as "non-artistic". I was on my high school newspaper staff and loved making cool vector art/logos, messing with clip art (recolor, etc.).* I just can't draw artistically, in the "classic" sense of those words. I was referring to fan art that wasn't focusing on characters (which 99% of Avalon fan art is). So, you out there who took offense, my apologies. Keep doing what you do.
* I also ran an 80 X 16 pixel outdoor electronic billboard at my school. Designing graphics for that sign that are viewable at 60 mph is tough, but fun!
--BigMal27
