I never really did like Alan all that much. Joe might not be the quickest off of the block, but at least he realizes what Alan is doing to Helene is wrong.

Actually, I was a little surprised to see that Alan actually considers himself in a relationship with Hel

Alan probably won't evolve for another year or so, after he's had time to really look back at this period of time.
And I'm not sure if this bodes well for Ceilidh either, based on Joe's response
------------------

I dunno, I think Joe's referring to himself as one of the clueless idiots. (He should've said this two years ago, after all...)

Yay for admitting when you're lost? Really, this strip further points out the truth in realtionships (at least as far as I know) of fumbling blindly trying to find the right path. Admitting that you don't know is important, but then you also have to be assertive. Being assertive that you don't know does tend to sound kind of of odd, "I'm absolutely sure I have no idea what I'm doing!", but quite often that's all you can go on. That and just doing the 'right thing' if you're too worried about hurting others (or yourself), which is what Joe tends to do. Alan seems more to be ignoring it altogether. It is possible that Alan is more considerate then he appears, however, in that he may be admitting he's not ready for any real realtionship and trying to push Helene away so she'll just give up on him. As he said, she'd be crushed if he broke up with her, so if he managed to get her to drop him it would be better.
Yeah, Alan and Helene haven't been given the same treatment as many of the other characters; there are few strips that show their inner thoughts (especially Alan). Personally, I'm more rooting for some Nancy-based strips, but that's just me

Joe was referring to Alan and himself. This strip didn't come out exactly as well as the script suggested it would...
JOSH.
------------------

The strip makes sense to me; it's just not clear what'll happen as a result. It wouldn't be the first time that Alan's thought about (or been reminded of) his problem with Helene... the question is if Joe feels like pushing the issue.
I'm more interested by Joe's last comment, and what he intends to do about his Ceilidh problem...
Yonatan
(ps -- delurking now... hi everyone!)

I don't think Joe is commenting on his current situation with Ceilidh, I think he's just agreeing with Alan that he doesn't know just how to handle dumping a girl either.
I don't know, Zunger. I think I would need to see Joe and Ceilidh together more before I make a conclusion about how they are doing. I mean, what he said to her that rainy summer night seemed to hint that he was interested in her after all.
Why don't you have some potato chips while we wait for more Avalon goodness? ^_^
Wapiko-chan
------------------

Restraint, sensitivity and perceptiveness are certainly major traits with Joe, anger is not. What I meant was that Joe has a tendency to sit on his feelings just a little too much, and that he has a very wide emotional range. Ceilidh found out, little by little, fell for it, and ultimately pulled Joe out of that m4d l33t shell he was hiding in. If it wasn't for her, todays strip would never have happened.
He's been sitting on his anger with Alan since grade 9. He could have sat on it forever . . . or at least until graduation. I've been waiting and hoping for this moment since 2:213, panel 3. I suspect Alan and Hel
