Hola.
I'm new to the boards, but not to Avalon. I've been reading this thing since about a year or so after it started. It's a fun strip, obviously. I doubt anyone'll refute that. But there's something that sort of piques my interest.
That's Nancy.
Nancy is, for all intents and purposes, a very bit player (although I'm open to differing opinions on that). From what I've seen, her sole schtick is beating on people based on a loosely defined code of 'honor', which basically consists of 'If I don't like you, you're a dishonorable punk. I must notallow you to survive without stuffing one of your extremeties up your nostrils'.
And yet, she's ridiculously popular.
I'm no stranger to anime. To parallel, Nacy remind me a lot of Motoko Aoyama from 'Love Hina', the take no crap kendo-woman that beats up on the luckless caretaker of her dorm. But Nacy's morality is rather questionable, and in my opinion gives her a slightly more 'bad girl' status. Again, the Japanese bad girl is a unique type, whose qualities grace such notable figures as Bubblegum Crisis 2040's Priss Asagiri, quiet, sometimes brooding, and all ass-kicking.
The question I'm getting at is: how does Nancy Kawasaki appeal to you? Or does she have any real appeal at all?

Not at all, no. But I feel old, I'm tired, and I have a pretty dead end job, and am surrounded by hooligan misfits for co-workers.
Frankly, I just like the name. There's a ring to it.

------------------

Depends on what you're talking about. Keiichi Gotoh is the devious, laconic, but well meaning Patlabor captain, and a fine character in himself. Check out the series if you haven't. The characters, while not as twisted as the Avalon ones, have definite personality.
But I thought we were going to talk about Nancy?
------------------

Nancy appeals because she is a threat, albeit not an unstoppable.
She is not entirely heartless, which shows she is capable of more.
She is also SUPER-COOL to use in fanfics

Heh. I've yet to see her in a hakama. I'd find that irrisistable. Unhealthy, since it'd be chasing after not just an underage girl, but an underage, kendo-stick weilding, fictional girl to boot.
But with so few appearances, can we really conceptualize what she's 'like'? Sure, she's a falliable, slightly off kilter threat, but do you see her more as a force of nature type of character, sweeping through and doing her thing as a plot device, or a living breathing person-type, like you'd accept, oh, say Ceilidh?

I figured all you needed to do was get an ugly green/white school uniform, and carry around a kendo stick, and scream in slightly stilted English (which is how I see her talking, for some reason).
Then, for emphasis, you'd bop people on the heads. With the stick.
------------------

Keiiji, she is alive enough.
She can and has been defeated.
She just isn't a major character. Hence, she's fanfic fodder.

True enough.
But I'd like to think she has more meaning to her than just some defeatable wench used for fodder.
Or maybe I'm just looking for a Japanese high school student to chase me around with a stick.
Now I'm confused.
------------------

Perhaps it has something to do with the little known fact that Nancy was based on nzero (me!)... isn't that right, Joshie... *applies slight pressure to the back of Josh's neck with the shinai hidden behind my back*

I like Nancy because there aren't too many brunette characters. Being Japanese is a plus, too.
And let's not forget the fact that if it wasn't for Nancy, there'd be no antagonism coming from anyone who isn't involved in a love triangle. She isn't so much fodder as an external (as in, external from Ceilidh/Joe/Pheebs/Ryan/Deidre/Alan/Helene)
source of conflict.
I must admit though, the whole kendo sword-carrying-in-school thing reminds me of Kuno...

The martial arts girl is a hang up in Japanese entertainment culture. That's what entertained me the most, to see such a girl stalking the halls of a Canadian High School. It's delightfully non sequitur.
If anything, she's got a ruthless streak, but still keeps her integrity (ala the school election). Whether or not that's honor or just stubborn pride is up for grabs, but it -does- indicate some girl with an interesting if not elaborate background.
Ultimately, it'd be nice to see more of her, even if she's just lurking the halls like a bad omen or whatnot. She is kind of cute, in that 'I'm going to crush you like a bug' sort of way.
------------------

Funny, I see Nancy as having both an interesting, and, maybe, slightly traumatic background- Whenever she shows up, she rapidly tries to go for "Center Of Attention" status, and she isn't picky about how...
I would suspect her parents ignore her, if, indeed, she has both parents at all, and try to replace "real affection and attention" with things, thus, leading to her slightly "bratty" behavior. They probably fight, as well, maybe even as a constant state of affairs. She obviously doesn't have any friends or supporters (probably due to her bullying "Look At Me, Acknowledge I'm Here" behavior (hitting people with sticks??? think about it...), and, so, we never get to see Nancy's life the way we do, say, Joes, or, Phoebe, or Ceilidh.
What I find attractive about her, honestly, is two things:
1. She's aggressive in an "Innocent" (i.e.
unsophisticated) way, probably, if someone were to actually pay attention to her, and, maybe, take her "In hand" (Stop her from being such a violent little twit), that person would be her "Number ONe!" especially, if the action were done subtly.
2. she's so cute when she rages...
------------------
