The large fonts you're noticing on some websites aren't actually a Windows XP thing. They're an Internet Explorer 6 thing. As of version 6, Internet Explorer no longer uses Arial as its default sans-serif font. Instead it seems to be using Verdana, which, at the "normal" size, looks bigger than Arial does. It's definitely fatter horizontally. You might notice this with XP because IE6 is bundled with it, but it happens to any machine that is upgraded to IE6.

I promise you, XP is not stable yet. It dies everytime my cable connection drops for more than thirty seconds (a fault of TWC for not anticipating demand on this node) and is a pain in the ass when trying to get mp3s.

I've had XP for over a month already, folks (don't ask how, but I have)... it's the AOL of operating systems. And since a friend and I constantly use the XP "smiley" (not really a smiley, is it?), that was the first thing that came to mind and the only thing I read when I see it.
Unfortunately, I've forgotten all the horrible problems that 98 and 2000 have to compare, so I'm stuck with XP unless I need to scan (my scanner refuses to work with XP, as do a few CD-R programs).
I must speak from experience, tho, that if you're eager to change some of the file association icons, that's unfortunately created a weird little problem where sometimes it will change the default "Open" function (double-click on a folder icon to open it) to "Search," so I ended up having to search for files rather than just opening the damn folder sitting right on the Desktop.
Damn you, Bill Gates! I'm going to buy me a MAC

Oh, and it keeps trying to show me all my image folders in Thumbnail view. I HATE Thumbnail view! I name all my image files so I don't HAVE to have thumbnails load! It's a waste of time! If I wanted thumbnails, I would have asked for them!

XP ain't bad. MS's best attempt for the Home user by far (Me was the worst). If you are running anything other than 98SE or Win2K at home, go get it if you have a fast enough computer with a decent hard drive (with RAM at $70CDn for 512Mb, RAM isn't an issue). If you have 98SE, I still recommend it. I run Win2K Pro at home, so I'm waiting a bit, no need to upgrade until the killer app comes along (60 Days or so uptime on Win2K for home use ain't bad.)
--Adam

The rumor is that for the first time since DOS, Microsoft has made an OS that lives up to the hype: efficient, stable, and fast. The end of the world is near! REPENT!!!
------------------

I don't know about you, but I've gained many levels in computer use through figuring out why Windows crashes
Seriously, though: XP rules. It's stable, functional, and good. Those who know me will find more value in this positive opinion, as I think Microsoft is an evil corporation run by evil forces (some call it "money"). What struck me as great was when I tried taxing it to it's fullest by installing a buggy program on it. It crashed and I was thinking "Ha! Now I have you! Not so tough, are you!?". Then on the startup menu there was an addition option beyond Safe Mode which let you run with the last stable setup. I was humbled...
I do dislike the large fonts. I thought the default font in websites and windows was too big, so I go into the Appearance. It's already on Normal for Font Size. Clicking on the selection box I find the other two options are Large and Extra Large! What about small for those who aren't blind?!? Everything takes up too much room...
And I take solace in that I'm not supporting the evil of Microsoft, yet I'm using their product. Mine's a cracked version

You can actually change that, and it's not especially hard. Basically, just make a 320x400 .bmp - 256 color, and replace the system file it's storing the startup/shutdown/etc pictures as desired. These are C:LOGO.SYS (startup), C:WINDOWSLOGOW.SYS (shutting down) and C:WINDOWSLOGOS.SYS (safe to turn off)
thanks to this quickly-googled site for clearing up the allowable resolutions: http://phish.marko.net/logo/change.html

Semi-solution to a few of the XP issues: XP Corporate Edition. Why?
No authorisation code.
You still have to go through the Passport BS though, since Microsoft is trying to lever the whole 'integrated online OS' concept on us, but no authorisation code means you can upgrade at your leisure and it won't try and gank you for it.
Also, no code means you can make PERFECTLY LEGAL BACKUP COPIES at will. PERFECTLY LEGAL BACKUP COPIES which should never be misused or given to others. Yes.
Oh, and also, IE6? This is what Opera is for. As soon as I can remember where to find it. Up yours, 'browser wars'.

I'm not yet impressed. For one, XP adds a nifty privacy-ick feature where if you make 4 changes to your hardware, XP stops working and you have to phone MS for a new key code number. For another, someone was poking around and became very paranoid about the fact that there's a login hardwired in that MS can log onto your system to tinker and disable access. Third, what's this I hear about XP being unusually sadistic toward 3rd party software? Something about whining at you whenever you try to use it or something?
