Well, it occurs to me that these are two characters that have never previously existed outside the context of their respective children. As far as I can remember, neither has made an appearance without Joe, DD, or one of the other "kids" present. Which makes it feel a bit odd to me. (As an aside, that reminds me of "Lola Rennt" (aka Run Lola Run), where all the scenes in which Lola or Manni are present are shot on film, whereas anything happening outside their context is shot on video, resulting in an interesting feeling that reality focuses around these two characters. Which is kinda the idea of the movie, I suppose.)
Anyway, the transition itself doesn't seem particularly jarring to me -- in fact, I thought Josh did a nice job in cleverly setting it up. We get the "no smoking" sign inside the cafe; my first thought is "doesn't Gar smoke?"; and then we're outside, and balance is restored, so to speak.
But then, I'm very sleepy and just typing a lot.

Hmmm, I'm worried about where this plotline is leading. I thought there was a foreboding atmosphere the first time Mr Bradley and Mrs Page met. A lot of people have speculated that in 3:27, the "James" she refers to is her ex-husband. If this is the case, then it would seem that Mr Bradley reminds her of her ex, which could either be a setup for her husband returning to Avalon (and all hell breaking loose), or "something's" going to happen between her and Mr Bradley.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong, but I still think it's rather ominous - maybe it's the Halloween influence...
---

Foreboding, indeed... y'know, it could be that Phil and Gar are going to be fracturing the Bradley household a little further... but then again, Mrs. Page* has been through this before, and she must know Deirdre and Phoebe well enough to want to avoid putting them through that. Right?
On the other hand, the strip's relationships to date have always had an element of high school to them. And since I finished high school years ago, I know *exactly* what each of them should do. :eyeroll: This whole married-life-and-afterwards thing is well beyond me, though.
As for the scene transition, I wanted to see more Alison, but that's just because I wanted to see more Alison. ; ) But we're still at the coffee shop, and Gar was giving Alison advice last week, so it seems like a smooth enough transition to me. And you're right, the non-smoking/smoking touch was pretty clever.
* I was just wondering... She doesn't go by her maiden name, does she? Hmm.

Or maybe Phil is honestly seeking advise from Gar... perhaps wanting to get a female perspective about certain things happening in his household. After all, he's the only male Bradley, and obviously not the dominant parent. Maybe he just needs a new approach, and Gar is the closest mature female friend he has

quote:
* I was just wondering... It would have been unnecessary for quite awhile anyway. Now that the focus has rolled around to these two, names are more useful... After all, in Calvin and Hobbes, the parents had no names, which pissed me off.
And while I'm posting and have room to talk, I'd say there's nothing wrong with the transition. At least we're not leaving behind female nudity, this time.

They were called Mom and Dad. Watterson did that quite deliberately.
This is discussed in Calvin and Hobbes 10th year collection.

Yeah, it's good to see the storyline advance...
But I can understand the detached second-eye retina of some people...
Albatross-Minh
PS: Have Hilde always been this sadistic?

But to get back on subject, since we are supposed to be discussing the strip (all I can say in my defense is that the author started it ), does the shift in the last two strips of the series seem a tad jarring to anyone else?
I'm not sure why - we switch perspectives from one set of characters to another all the time, after all. And yet, this one seems ... forced to me.
I know it's not fair for me to say that when I don't really know what's going on. It has been months since we've seen these two characters share a panel, and we still have more questions than answers about them both, really.
Maybe I'm just worried that too many of them are about to be answered all at once.
Forgive my lack of faith, Darth Author. I shall get over it with a good day's sleep, I'm sure.
