Why would Ceilidh call the boy she claims to love a "social nitwit"? Isn't that a bit harsh?
------------------

It's a woman thing, as far as I know. Women seem to enjoy torturing their boyfriends. :P

Isn't that rather sadistic, and stereotypical? I'm a girl, I don't torture anybody...

"Patriotism seems to be falling to whoever claims it loudest, and we're left struggling to find a definition in a clamor of reaction. This is what I'm hearing: Patriotism opposes the lone representative of democracy who was brave enough to vote her conscience instead of following an angry mob. (Several others have confessed they wanted to vote the same way, but chickened out.) Patriotism threatens free speech with death. It is infuriated by thoughtful hesitation, constructive criticism of our leaders and pleas for peace. It despises people of foreign birth who've spent years learning our culture and contributing their talents to our economy. It has specifically blamed homosexuals, feminists and the American Civil Liberties Union. In other words, the American flag stands for intimidation, censorship, violence, bigotry, sexism, homophobia, and shoving the Constitution through a paper shredder? Who are we calling terrorists here? Outsiders can destroy airplanes and buildings, but it is only we, the people, who have the power to demolish our own ideals."
- Barbara Kingsolver, "And Our Flag Was Still There"

I might add that because of gwalla here, they are considering adding another rank: Keenspotter in Need of a Social Life. Just joking... Nah, it is just a stereotype, but with shows such as Keeping Up Appearances, an unavoidable one.
BritComedies rule!

I think I should point out that before they were a couple, they were rather good friends. Good enough for Joe to call her one of his best friends. Friends do insult each other once in a while, and we've seen them to it to each other before. The fact that the moniker is in quotes implies (at least to me) that he is being his usual sarcastic self, while the fact that he is doing what is on the list shows that he is indulging his girl.
It's actually a rather well measured response. And I really enjoyed the "sweet baboo" comment today.
If they have potato chips at the party, can I come?
Wapiko-chan
------------------

I think we call the use of derogatory remarks for the purpose of communicating closeness and affection as... "ribbing."
And Ceilidh seems to enjoy a ribbing Joe, and Joe should be pleased, for this means she feels safe with his assumptions about her intentions.
That means that Joe is ribbed for her pleasure.
<ducks under the mahogany desk>

First off, Joe communicates by insults. Read the first few Ceilidh-Joe snowball fights, the pool table arc, and most recently the bit with Pheobe.
Anyone who knows him well is going to respond in-kind. Ceilidh knows him better than just about anybody, at this point.

/me chokes on his imaginary Jones Soda at this point
WHAT?!?
/me rereads the post
Oh, just about anybody. Hmm. That sounds almost like a leader for the possibility that Josh might introduce a character from Joe's deep past that knows his deep, dark secrets...
If that hasn't happened once or twice already, that is.
