He could be talking about something else that he lost... a chance at love. Yes, he did lose his friendship, but he also lost the hope of having Phoebe in a way that far surpasses simple friendship. Food for thought, wishfull thinking, and a sacrifice in the hopes of making it happen (die you damned dirty lamb! Die!!).

IMHO Joe ought not to talk too much about the other girls. He must show Ceilidh that she is the one occupying his thoughts. First and foremost. All that stuff. Even mentionning the other might be a mistake.
Anh Minh

My first thought on reading the last panel today was that maybe we're about to take another step closer to the truth about what happened in Grade 9. I'm not going to quote the "evidence", such as it is, since it's been done in other threads ("The relevant reference", for one), but I'm still convinced that either Joe and Phoebe were romantically involved or they had an understanding that could be perceived as romantic involvement, and when it disintegrated in the face of Joe's crush on Hel

The way I see it, Joe's only option now is to pour his heart out in return. He owes Ceilidh that much - he owes her every embarrasing and painful little detail about him and Phoebe. He also needs her understanding, if he is to salvage anything from this.
And he needs to move on himself - he's been unable to commit himself or risk anything. He might as well be dead that way.

Agreed, Klaus. Ever since the beginning of this week, I've thought that if indeed Joe and Phoebe were romantically involved, he now owes it to Ceilidh to tell her about it. If she trusts him as much as she does, then the least he can do is show that he trusts her and that her trust in him is not misplaced. After all, trust is fundamental to friendships as well as to relationships, and this involves showing the other person that you both trust him/her and can be trusted by him/her.
And there is no better way to start showing that than by being completely honest about his history with Phoebe. He is clearly not sure of his feelings for Hel

Actually, at this very moment the important thing is not what Joe may or may not have had with Phoebe. I believe the central question in Ceilidh's mind is "what is it, Joe, what is it that we already have?"
Perhaps she'll ask it aloud.
------------------

Yep.
Joe's on the right course, but he needs to spill all, now.
Joe lost both relationship and friendship with Phoebe, and he doesn't want it to happen again. But in the course of preventing it, he's actually driving it towards happening.
------------------

Points well made, but my way of thinking was that by explaining what happened between himself and Phoebe, perhaps Joe would shed some light on what there is now, and what he thinks there could be, between himself and Ceilidh. By being honest with her, showing that he trusts her and, most importantly, that she can trust him; the last is patently rather in doubt in her mind at the moment.
If he is honest with her about what happened before and how he feels about the past, present, and future, they may start on the right foot after the initial stumble and he'll be able to preserve, for now at least, both the friendship and the relationship.
K.A.H.

You're missing the point here.
The point is, Ceilidh took off most of her clothes to pour her heart out to Joe. Does that mean that Joe has to take off most of his clothes to pour his heart out to her? And does that mean we'll find out if it's Boxers or Briefs? *evil snicker*
Or worse, I can see this:
"Wait a second, Joe. Before you start, you have to take off everything but your underwear."
"What?!?"
"Well, I did. Fair's fair."
"Um... I can't do that."
"Why?"
"I... don't wear underwear."
*evil laughter*
------------------

It is a little-known fact that PSL can be a life-threatening condition.
Take for example Tangent here, who is reduced to delirious horny raving after reading something good and wholesome like Avalon. AntiJoyce could make him go blind. Jordan could make his head explode!
Surf smart. Surf safe. Only read comics with 5% fanservice or less.

K A H, you know, I can't believe I never considered that before. Somehow, the idea of Joe and Phoebe having been together just didn't seem right. But now that I actually give the idea some thought, it works. Ryan's flashback from 2:10 makes this seem quite probable.
Grade 9 (or earlier!) would be about right for them to have become involved, but kept it secret because they didn't want assorted friends to find out. Or maybe Phoebe felt betrayed when Joe started chasing after Helene. I feel sure that the timing and circumstances of her joining up with Todd don't work with the story we've been given, that there's something more there we don't know.

And more importantly, he's grabbed part of her that's... ahem... non-erogenous.
Bravo, Joe.

Joe DID mention Helene. Maybe he was friends with her, but scared her off by trying to move too quickly into a more romantic relationship?
-K

"I don't want to lose what we already have. I lost it once before..." What Joe and Ceilidh already have, is friendship. He lost the friendship of Phoebe before.
