Okay. Joe seems to be thinking things through and actually saying things that are not hurtful or idiotic. In doing so, he's stripped away Ceilidh's defenses, true. But unless Ceilidh reacts completely unpredictably (breaking up because she realizes that she's pushing Joe into this, perhaps?) then I don't see the relationship between Joe and Ceilidh being an Abrupt End.
Unless.
Being a complete cynic here.
What if Ceilidh *did* read Joe's comments? And what if he told Phoebe that he does still care for her a lot and wishes things could have been different? Now Ceilidh sees Phoebe as competition and sees herself losing Joe. And thus decided to do the one thing she could to keep Joe - offering herself to him.
And he turned her down.
What matters the excuse? He said no. He's not attracted to her that way. (But he's being a Gentleman you say? Would *she* see it that way?)
Thus her final gambit has failed. If she had ended up sleeping with Joe then she does not see any way she could lose him to Phoebe. But he turns her down. The whimper? The knowledge that she almost had him... and somehow failed. He slipped through her fingers.
However... I don't see Ceilidh being that blatently manipulative. She *is* unsure about herself. I think if she stripped before someone, she'd half expect to be turned down from what her words said.
Hell, the look on her face right now you'd almost think she's about to cry. Which would be *very* awkward because the first thing a guy is tempted to do is take a crying girl in his arms and comfort her and *that* right now... *evil snicker*
So, why would she do what she did? I think she pulled off the dress without thinking, and then suddenly realized what she was doing and where she was. And like Margaret over in CRFH, suddenly just decided to take a chance, and took it one step further. She could hear Joe's initial reaction. And yet it did not make her feel good about herself. She started trying to explain herself, while covering herself up. She is unsure now. And things don't go as expected.
So. An Abrupt End. An end to innocence? An end of childhood? An end of what?
Of course, this is Josh and his twistiness. What if she *does* start crying? And Joe does what most guys would do, take her in his arms and comfort her? And then her parents come home. Find their little girl naked in some guy's arms crying....
------------------

Well, now we know that Joe won't be caught with a nude Ceilidh... (First Law of Avalon: Anything the lynchers state might happen will not happen.)
However, the first law has a flaw, for it allows us to control the direction of the comic by eliminating anything we don't want to happen. Therefore, other laws exist that make the first law true and false at the same time.
In thus lies the twistiness.
And why I fear it.

The lynchers have predicted that they'll be caught by *Ceilidh's parents*. That just means they'll be caught by someone else.
Like, say, Noelle.
(Well, that's what happened the last time people predicted someone's parents would wander in and cause trouble.)

Joe manages to calm down Ceilidh, get her clothed again and feeling sure of herself... and goes home only to find Phoebe there with the yearbook and a hopeful look on her face... *snicker*
Phoebe: "You *do* still care for me, Joe!" *hug*
Joe: "Eep!" *startled deer-looking-at-headlights-look*
Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!
------------------

Elementary, my dear aardvark.
Joe has proven himself to be a Gentleman by not taking advantage of Ceilidh in a moment of vulnerability. And that he was able to consider her feelings and not hurt her. Now he's faced with an old friend he still has feelings for who is suffering from depression and loneliness as bad as Ceilidh's and if he reaches out to her, then it will hurt Ceilidh, and if he doesn't then Phoebe will withdraw even worse.
And mind you, coldacid, I never said *anything* about nude Phoebe. Just that she was waiting. It's not Phoebe's style to be naked and waiting.
Besides, the 0th Rule of Avalon is: If it is Evil Enough, it matters not what the Boardies Say, It Shall Be So.
------------------

Everyone else thinks I'm a perverted bastard. Then you show up and prove them wrong. Good timing, I owe you a beer.
