Discussion thread is here, if you want it.

I figured I might as well get this TRAIN wreck going. First of all, a recap:

BACKGROUND:
The year is 2150, and things have changed a great deal since the early 21st century. The century that had begun with bright dreams for the future was shattered by a nuclear disaster in the year 2054 that left the Northern Hemisphere uninhabitable and the nations of the Southern Hemisphere reeling. After careful discussion, they realised that their only hope of survival was to band together into a single World Government, which first convened in 2100, at the beginning of the 22nd century. "This," proclaimed the first President of the Earth, Jack Nolan, in his inauguration speech on the 1st of January, 2100, outside Earth Parliament House in Sydney, Australia, "is the beginning not only of a new century, but a new era for the planet Earth and humanity."
He was right. Just twenty years later, scientists working in a Johannesburg laboratory announced an astonishing discovery. The Universe, they said, was not flat. It was the skin of a massive cosmic sphere, inside was complete nothingness. The scientists dubbed this nothingness the "Intravoid", though it was coloquially called "hyperspace".
"But," people cried, "how come none of our spaceships have ever penetrated the Intravoid? Surely travelling towards the interior would eventually take you there!"
The answer was simple. One cannot reach the Intravoid by travelling through the conventional four dimensions. Or, to quote Douglas Adams, one cannot travel "at right-angles to reality". It required a special method.
One that the scientists eventually came up with five years later. It involved cutting a hole in the fabric of space-time and sealing it with gates that could open and close. These gates were made of a special material called "Continuonium" which was actually partly made up of the fabric. When sets of gates were set in a line, one could move through the first gates, then after they closed, through the second and into hyperspace. However, one required a special vehicle to safely travel through hyperspace or else they would die in the void. To this end, the same scientists constructed the TRAnsport via INtravoid machine, or TRAIN. The TRAINS were also constructed of Continuonium, and could thus safely navigate the Intravoid, cutting normal travel time through regular space-time drastically.
In 2135, a massive space station was put in geostationary orbit above Sydney. This was Earth's Grand Central TRAIN Station, and all across the universe, at every human outpost, similar satellites were going up. This was the beginning of the era of the TRAIN as the standard for interstellar travel.
The gates had to be placed on space stations because if placed on a planet's surface there was a very slight chance that the gravity would muck up the process and send said planet spinning into the Intravoid. A very slight chance, true, but the scientists weren't willing to take any.
And so, we come to today. All across the universe, humans are travelling from star to star via hyperspace. From Earth to Alpha Centauri to Betelgeuse, TRAIN stations link outposts together. And who knows what the next day will bring?

SETTING: Various TRAIN stations scattered across the universe. Ultra-modern space stations with artificial gravity. The largest are similar to major airports.

OK. Make with the posty-posty.

Station ring 3, Mars orbit:

"Sebastian, you have a message."
"Huh? A message? On screen, Jack."
"Working..."
"WHY AREN'T YOU HEADING TO WORK YET?!"
"Eep! I forgot! Today's a work day!"
"I told you this eight minutes ago, and reminded you once a minute after that."
"Yeah yeah, thanks jack, you win a cookie. For now I've gotta go!"

Dashing into a semblance of orderliness, Sebastian makes a dash through his morning ritual and out the door, using the low gravity section in the upper portion of the corridor to help him speed along. It was still taking too long for his taste, though. He called Jack through his neural link.

>Jack!
>>Yes?
>I need a boost to work. Help me out here please!
>>On it.

Sebastian grabbed onto Jack as he came barreling past, using small grippy straps designed just for this. Pulling himself up to the handholds on Jacks sides, he was able to hear Jack mutter that he had thirty seconds before he would reach his destination.

"Thanks a bunch, buddy!"
>>Don't mention it. There's going to be one heck of a crash landing though.
"WHAT?!"

GRAND CENTRAL STATION, GATE 4 PASSENGER LOUNGE, EARTH ORBIT

Marci and Marco Marcellis discussed their upcoming trip to Alpha Centauri and why they really would have preferred not to go there to see their aunt. Still, family members had to keep in touch, and the Marcellis clan was no exception. The only problem with this particular aunt was that she was convinced that they would grow some pigment if fed on a disgusting diet of Centaurian Zortrat spleen, a dubious theory at best. Anyway, they had got the cheap tickets, with stopovers on the moon, Mars, Ganymede and Triton before reaching Alpha Centauri. They just hoped that their stay wouldn't be too long.

Station ring 3, Mars orbit:
"Waah!" Yelled Sebastian as his employers book store came up to greet him- at a rate of about 30 miles an hour. Fortunately, his crash landing was forestalled by the appearance of a gravity surge in the section he was traveling in.

Fortunately, this increase placed him smooshed into a pile of pillows that had been laid along the corridor floor. He was helped to his feet by his employer, Mr. Marlin and his wife, Brianna.

"So Sebastian, good to see you've dropped in- reasonably close to on-time this time as well. An extra hour off your paycheck for this; I'm not coming to save your butt every single morning, am I clear?"

"Yes sir." Said sebastian abashedly.

"Good to know we understand each other. Now Get to Work! Restock the shelves, Sweep the ledgers and arm the Anti-Theft system! It's another busy day, my boy, and The customers are just begging to come by my shop!"

"On it Mr. Marlin!"

GRAND CENTRAL STATION, GATE 4 PASSENGER LOUNGE, EARTH ORBIT

"Attention all passengers. Attention all passengers. Flight 743 to Alpha Centauri via the moon, Mars, Ganymede and Triton will no longer stop at the moon, due to flesh-eating zortbeetles. We apologise for the inconvenience. The flight is now boarding." The intercom flicked off and the Marcellis twins made their way onto the waiting TRAIN.

FLIGHT 743, HYPERSPACE, TEN MINUTES LATER

The TRAIN slipped through the void at a speed that is entirely irrelevant. It was really only a three-minute trip to Mars, and it soon pulled into the station.

STATION RING 3, MARS ORBIT

"It's going to be a long haul later on," Marco said. "I'm going to get a book or something." He and Marci ducked into the store. "Excuse me..." Marco said to Sebastian.

"Really? Eighty-nine percent for me, then, I had you pegged for a mystery man myself. Speaking of, do you have an interest in-" And here he glanced around to make sure no one was listening-"Older novels? Stuff from before Earth was only a Hemisphere."

>>I've found it, Sebastian.
>Good job, Jack! now just bring it here.
>>There's just one problem.
>What?
>>I can't reach it. My body does not include a grab book function or apperatus.
>What shelf is it on?
>>Third from the top, and I can't reach my graspers high enough to-
>Jack?
>>Yes Sebastian?
>You can hover.
>>And?
>Rise up to the shelf and grab it down.
>>... Oh! that does make much more sense! Thanks so much Sebastian!
>Pleasure to be of help.
>>So can we get ice cream now?

"Your selection is in. Just wait a moment as my hover unit brings it here."
He paused, examining Marco closely.
"You wouldn't happen to have any ice cream would you? My robots been acting strangely recently, and I may need to bribe it."
I told you. Humans only see what they're looking for.

Marci, meanwhile, browsed through the Young Adult section.

"Well, some of them I collect, and my employer is in heated competition with me. Also, some people don't like it when I mention Whole Earth Era objects- They act like I'm spitting on someone's grave or something. I'm not sure about there reasoning though- I'm just a collector of old junk mostly."

>>Is there Ice cream? Cause I'm not coming out without ice cream.
>Jack, what do you need Ice cream for? You can't even eat any.
>>So?
>Never mind, Jack. Never mind. Just get out here and we'll discuss getting you some ice cream.
>>Yay!

"I'm sorry, but Jack is encountering difficulties managing the terrain," Said Sebastian, hoping Marco wouldn't catch that Jack was a hovering robot, "But He should be joining us soon. Hello there!" he called over to Marci, who he had just now noticed, "Anything I can interest you in?"
I told you. Humans only see what they're looking for.

>Jack, when are you going to-
>>Boo, said Jack as he nudged Sebastian very sneakily.

"Eep!" Said Sebastian, jumping a slight bit.

"And here is your book sir, that will be seventeen dot thirty-eight Currency Points!" Chirped Jack cheerfully, handing the book over to Marco.

Then he turned to face Sebastian, one grasper still holding the book out for Marco to grab.
