Since the DC is dying a slow but inevitable death, I think I'll wait until PSO comes out on another system like the Gamecube before I make a decision.

An RPG, basically. Phantasy Stars 1-4 came out for the Sega Genesis a long time ago, and Phantasy Star Online is an online RPG that was recently released for the Sega Dreamcast, and actually doubles as a single-player game. Phantasy Star was also the first RPG released in the United States.
You have any more game questions, just call. ::warps off::
[This message has been edited by Sabin_XIII (edited 07-03-2001).]

Okay, looks like we have four people:
- Josh (me): Staedtler
- Quattro: Rillyan, Stryker, ???
- Skullie: Ryojian
- Stern: ???
Let's meet online at 8:00pm Eastern (5:00pm Pacific, 1:00am GMT) on Wednesday, July 4 (today). If you can't make it for that time, say so, and hopefully someone else can join in.
Now, I'm going to try to find a good ship/block to join... let's say US/Oberon, Block 7. If Block 7 is full, try Block 8. Then Block 9. Etc. Basically just try to find Staedtler in the lobby. :-) Er... in Lobby 1. Man, this is complicated.
Try joining the Avalon team. the password is Larry (capital L).
Anyways, good luck to us all... just trying to meet up, anyway. :-)
JOSH.

Since I only seem to find wackos and people who don't speak English in PSO, I was wondering if we could accumulate 4 players and have a go at it. At least I'll be able to try the online mode without fearing for my character's life. :-)
I was thinking of Wednesday night, maybe around 7 or 8 pm Eastern, to last a couple hours. There could be other games, but I won't be available again until next week.
So if you're up for a game, let me know!
JOSH.
------------------

See you guys in Oberon.
gwalla- A FOmarl is is a female human magic user. As far as polygonal images go, the FOmarl (and the HUnewearl also) can be pretty damn cute.

Heh, I guess I'll start as the FOmarl then. :-) Kylis is white-robed with long red hair (Yeah, my thing for redheads will be quite apparent...) I can bring in Staedtler later.
So... how about, upon joining US/Oberon, Block 7, just join the Avalon team. I know ppl who will swear up and down Final Fantasy came first. Personaly I don't care.
Basicaly Phantasy Star Online is one of teh first online consul RPGs to hit gaming shelves worldwide. It's got more freedom then normal RPGS beacuse your not limited to one character to play, in fact you ahve 9 diffrent ones to chose form. The things that make you character diffrnet are its physical factors as PSO lets you changes everythinga bout your character from clothing colros to hair and eyes... the only thing that doesns't change is the characters outfits.
The only prob;lem with teh US release of PSO is Sega took out it's support of BroadBand connections so people who use DSLs Cable modems and T3's are SOL till PSO version 2 comes out next year and when it does you'll be charged to play PSO online due to the high server upkeep costs.
I did finf out a way to get PSO-US to support a BraodBand Adaptor, but it's risky and involves getting an import copy of PSO and a moded DC... but then whats the point cuse the Jap PSO can be configured to be in English so theirs no point to it... and I'm ranting so I'll just shut up now ^^
------------------

Heh, I've had a DC for a couple months now. :-) I had to get my Soul Calibur on (and PSO was a delightfully kick-ass game, too).
I have a lv. 14 FOmarl named Kylis, and a lv. 11 HUmar named Staedtler. I'm mostly interested in gaining experience, so I could go with either character.
I suppose, in order to meet each other, we just have to agree on a ship/block. I've only played online once before, and I chose random stuff until I was actually in the game. Actually, my first attempt at randomness got me into a Japanese block... my second attempt got me English-speaking players. :-)
Perhaps someone with more online experience could offer some pointers. Anyone? Al-Azif? ;-)
JOSH.
------------------

Ultima predates DQ and FF by several years, and Akalabeth before that!
But if you're talking about Japan->US conversions..
FF came out in Japan in 1987, in the US in 1990
DQ came out in Japan in 1986, in the US in 1989
PS came out in Japan in 1987, in the US in 1988
the JP release order: DQ, PS/FF (not sure which was first
the US release order: PS, DQ, FF
i'm 100% sure on these! I looked them up AND played the games to verify :P

by the way, they only KINDA took out the support for broadband connections.
the only thing they "took out" was the ability to configure the BBA from pso itself. Now, you have to get something that uses it and save the configuration so PSO will know what to do with the BBA. The BBA passport (not released here, yet. crap.) was available on the internet for a long time and was quite small to download, as well. A burned CD will play on a DC with no modification, by the way. Only if you burn an ISO image, though (which is what the passport is) I won't go into where to get it, here, but since it'd be free if it came out here anyway I don't see any moral problems with getting it :P
And finally, the only reason it says "PSO DOES NOT SUPPORT BROADBAND" if you try to connect the wrong way, is that they simply "mistranslated" the message from NETWORK SETTINGS ARE WRONG or something.
[This message has been edited by Skullie (edited 07-04-2001).]

First off, you can actually hook your Dremcast to piggyback your DSL/Cable connection with some tweaking, and a nifty program that I can't remember go figure, but it is possible as I've done it at my friend's house. You only get a 33.6 connection, but that's what the Dreamcast connects at annyways.
I'll probably go with Rillyan, she's a Fomarl as well. She's got a purple robe, purple hair tied back in a braid with a bow, and has the painted eyes.
See you there...
Quattro

------------------

First of all, *every* name in PSO is seriously leeged up. :-) It's like the game designers were trying at a completely new language. Luckily there are some recognizeable patterns in things like item names, but otherwise the names are completely made up.
As for character types... the first part of the name (the two capital letters) tell you the profession: Hunter (HU), Ranger (RA), and Force (FO). Hunters are adept at close-combat, Rangers are good with firearms, and Forces are strong technique-users (techniques being, effectively, magic).
The rest of the character type's name (the lower-case part) describes the character's race and gender. mar = human male, marl = human female, newm = newman male, newear = newman female, cast = male android, caseal = female android. Each type has different strengths and weaknesses among 6 different attributes.
There are only 9 different permutations of these types:
HUmar

Here's a question to the three others who played last night:
During the fight against the caves boss, I (Kylis) died somethin' bad. :-) What's weird is I don't know exactly how I got killed. It's difficult to tell what's going on against that boss *anyway*, but it was as if I was suddenly reduced by 100-odd HP for no real reason. Did anyone else get hit really bad? Was it just a matter of having lots of HP to survive the hit?
Either way, that was a pretty successful run... killed the boss in about 2 minutes, and Kylis gained 2 levels. :-) We'll have to do it again sometime next week!
JOSH.
------------------
