Ah.. but he IS "hitting on" her... Not in a generally affable "college frat boy" style of "come on", of course; but through a gesture that springs from a true attraction to a person and says "I like you, but there's some fundamental issues that you've got to be willing to compromise with me in order for things to work out."
In short, he is treating her as a human being, and NOT (purely) as an object of lust.
And, if you will notice, she has done the same things here, laying her demands on the table. Actually the ball is in her court (so to speak), as he has, by the afore mentioned actions, shown her that he CAN act in a manner unlike his previous (imagined?) exploits.
[This message has been edited by Elim Stone (edited 07-02-2001).]

I don't realy think Allison is the outside observer because she feels/wants to feel moraly superiour, but because she doesn't care and doesn't want the inconveniance of getting involved. She doesn't perceive the activities of the others as "immoral" but as pointles, and possibly damaging. She respects her friends' rights to do what they want without her interferance, but feels Iain is an external threat to them and is therefore willing to interfere. It's not just that he is promiscuous, it's that his promiscuity is a threat to her friends.

Iain should really be throttled for his entire response, but his capper is at the end. "Let's eat." This suggests he doesn't even want Alison to have a chance to defend herself.
Go home, you Aussie punkass.
(This by no means suggests that I hate Aussies, just Iain, who happens to be an Aussie.)

She's just as dysfunctional as the rest of the Avalon crew. She's wrapped herself up in the role of the mentor, counselor, guide. Here is my take on the Alison/Iain blowup...
Look at Alison's character... She is the MOTHER of the group.
She is the first one to approach Ceilidh on Day one. Indeed, Ali takes Ceilidh under her wing, making intros, etc.
In strip 1:17.1-2 she's all -you don't look good, have some coffee-
Alison hosts the New Years party both times.
1:41.2 she questions why Joe has a lighter.
1:64 *She* initiates her involvement in the Ceilidh-Joe thing.
On the way back from the hockey game, she encourages Mrs. P to start the Cafe.
She jumps in and helps RUN the Cafe, without being asked, and before being hired.
SHE is the one people turn to for advice, stability.
That is her niche in the social structure.
So when Iain blows in, he pushes all Ceilidh's buttons, then all but ignores her for to chase Phoebe.
Alison sees Ceilidh losing interest in Joe, Phoebe pissed off beyond measure, Joe flustered and upset.
And Iain hasn't even got a crack in his cheese-eating grin (or should that be vegemite?)
All Ali's hard work in keeping her little clan stable and happy is in the crapper.
So, in 2:180.4, When Iain shows an unmasked carnal interest in the other girls there,
Ali sees it as a threat to her "charges" and clear evidence that his "interest" in Ceilidh and Phoebe was purely predatory.
And you know what will happen when you mess with a mother bear's cubs...
That "NNNGGYEEUH" was a GROWL!
Then he stood up to her, which we've not seen anybody do yet, and just causally dismissed the whole confrontation.
This left her in stunned silence, and we have yet to see the fallout of it.
RJ Shep

As an aside, how do you pronounce "Guelph"?

Probably, nothing.
Iain's right. Alison is afraid. She's held herself aloft from all the twistiness of her friends' relationships, because she sees how it hurt them. She holds parties, hangs out, but she never gets involved. And as much as I hate Iain (only slightly less than Alan), he speaks the truth to Alison. And it struck a cord with her.
But I don't think Alison v. Iain is going to wind up as Alison + Iain. I think Josh is simply using Iain to force Alison to look at her own life for a chance. Alison hates Iain for how he treats her friends. Iain, who sees nothing wrong with said treatment, spats back a truthful observation at Alison. Just because Iain's words got through doesn't mean Alison is gonna go all snugglebunnies with the Aussie.
Snugglebunnies???

Well, thats what this is all about, this thing called Avalon, isn't it?
Lonliness, and how the various characters deal.
Ceilidh - Mopes, then schemes
Phoebe - Hooks up w/ loser, goes postal
Alison - Mothers the others
Helene - chases Alan
Deirdre - Poaches Feeb's wannabe BF
Nancy - Buries herself in politics
just my $.02
RJ Shep

Well, I hate to say it, but I really agree with Iain.
*attempts to duck out of harm's way*
You know, Ali just came out of left field there, didn't she? She may not LIKE Iain; she may not even approve of what he does, but talk about pointlessly judgmental.
She agrees with him when he says she's mad at him because he's promiscuous. Hmm... green with envy? Everyone gets Iain but HER?
But if someone started insulting you out of the blue, especially when you're an aussie (okay, I don't mean that, but it was an easy shot), how are you gonna react?
------------------
