I've been playing with The GIMP recently and decided to try my hand at colourizing a random Avalon Strip.

I'm no davey3000 but I think it's pretty good for a first try by somone with no artistic ability.

I've fixed the problem (and changed to progressive interlacing), I had to tell it not to save the background colour in the save dialog.

This is fun, here's another:

I had to figure out how to remove the existing shading and do the hair highlites for this one, it the trick was in the clever use of colour curves.

That's pretty good, though the shading makes Helene look like she fell in some dust.

Weird... it looks like the pure black colour is set to transparent, which turns most of the lines into the same light grey colour as in the background of the message. Apparently I'm the only one detecting it. :-/
JOSH.

Josh: Its a PNG. Your browser probably doesn't handle them right if you're having a problem. Mozilla 0.8.1 seems to handle them properly.
A good job on the colouring. Although the shading and dark tones generally remind me of the colouring used in the It's Walky colour comics.
------------------

Full-Color Archives? WooHoo!
We've still got a ways to go, though. By my count, we have about 116 of 378 comics colored. I'm still working on my own colorings, which I'll post here when they're done. I look forward to your next set, Spoon. Which set are you doing?

Not sure... Depends on the version of IE. I would provide a link to a page on libpng.org that provides more details, but their server seems to be down.
------------------

I belive PNG supports two kinds of transparency, indexed (like GIFs) and Alpha. The problem here seems to have been with the indexed type. I know IE can't do alpha properly (it just shows the PNG's background colour) My best guess is that Netscape 4 thinks that the PNG is in indexed transparency mode when it is supposed to be in no transparency mode and uses the background colour for the transparent one. But then I don't realy know that much about the internal workings of PNGs.

Looks like Netscape can't handle .pngs without an alpha channel. Typical.
Hai-Etlik: It's easy to fix the image to not confuse Netscape. In the GIMP, select the Image/Alpha/Add Alpha Channel menu item, and save. Your avalon20001013.png is already "fixed", BTW, and looks fine.
