I was wondering if I should get rid of the Avalon Weekly Poll. I know that lately it's been anything but "weekly," and that's mostly because I can't come up with any good poll ideas. Also, occassionally the results reset themselves (stupid bug in the software). Plus, perhaps no one really notices it or even cares.
So, should it stay or go?
JOSH.

Why don't you just start a weekly pool, and then at the end of each week just choose one of the suggested polls and use that? Saves you the trouble of thinking.
------------------

Personally since it hasn't been updated in a while I'm not bothering to vote in it much. But I'm still partial to having the feature there every once in a while just because it'd be hell on UBB to try to keep track of people voting for any random thing you might think to put up there.
Though you could make that the new poll topic...
-----

Trunks: You're just trying to make me do more work. Stop it.
Quasi: So you suggest that I only use it for genuinely important questions? That makes sense, except that it's prone to losing data, and people voting more than once. :-/
JOSH.

I say get a forum member or IRCer to volunteer to come up with the polls for a given month. If you don't like one of the polls they turn out, just leave the previous weeks' poll up there.
I'm sure Jen Aside or NotDamonk could turn out some suitably insane polls.
------------------

I like the poll, myself - it's a neat little thing to do, and it's not yet another BeSeen quizlet. ("No, Walky, I will not love you when your characters are old and fat. I'm not terribly fond of you RIGHT NOW." ) And I totally agree with the idea of making other people come up with the poll topics - all you'd have to do is post them up there. For example:

Are Ryan and Deidre actually shagging?

Yes

No

Maybe

If I say yes, will you draw it?

What do you think about the seriousness of the comic?

It's too serious, you should make more gags.

It's too light-hearted - this is heavy stuff!

It's fine just the way it is.

Do you miss the Barq's jokes?

Yes

No

This poll bites

Have you already voted in this poll?

Yes

No

Isn't that a bit paradoxical?

Do you know where the idea of pairing Damonk and Deidre started?

Damonk got really sloshed one night, and...

NegativeZero got really sloshed one night, and...

Josh got really sloshed one night, and...

Something that didn't involve people getting sloshed.

What is the square root of AVALON?

(AVALON) ^ .5

42

Move 'zig' for great justice

This is moronic

Having a thread where people post poll ideas might work...
Would that work for you Josh? Or do you just not have enough time to set them up?

First Poll: Come on, Josh, like knowing the answer stops any of us from debating it. You could post the entire remainder of the story tomorrow and we'd STILL debate over it.
Second Poll: ...okay, conceded.
Third Poll: Actually, I don't have a clear memory of writing that one. I think I was on the phone with Erin at the time.
Fourth Poll: Then ask if you've voted in a variant of this poll, maybe?
Fifth Poll: Well, no, it saves me from having to know the actual answer.
Sixth Poll: Hey, if they're ALL throw-away answers, then who knows what they'll pick? It might be interesting!
Actually, the sixth was the only joke I had, but I felt compelled to write others to prove a point. I wish I knew what that point was.

They're not all throw-away answers, it's just a silly poll. The square root of Avalon would be (AVALON) ^ .5, so we could use the poll as a test to see how math-litterate Avalon readers are.
Personally, though, I still like the answer 42. I'm just a softy for that, I know the joke is overused. Maybe that answer should be 6.48074 (the square root of 42), since Avalon is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.
Peace,

NO JOSH, please don't ge rid of it! I care a lot about the polls, because I always contributed my votes to them and found them fun to begin with. And also, if you're having trouble with poll ideas, Uc and I could help you out with some ideas if you want. So don't get rid of the polls, please?

[This message has been edited by Usa-chan (edited 05-02-2001).]

Now, now, forty-two is merely the Answer to the Ultimate Question (which is, of course, "What do you get when you multiply six times nine?"). Meaning that Avalon = 1764.

Two thoughts, Mr. Phillips:

What poll service do you use? I use FreePolls (freepolls.com), and they seem mostly reliable insofar that I've not actually lost any votes (that I'm aware of--and I check the results fairly often).

Have you considered putting a "today's date" function in the header or somewhere? I've started pasting it in my index page so that readers can know when the last update was.

That is all. We return you to our regularly scheduled kao.

Josh, how about you have people give you possible polls? If it means more sanity for you, then drop the damn thing, but I figure that enough of us loonies can think of a few polls. I'm not sure if that is what Trunkster was talking about, but if it is, then I agree. Yes. Must sleep. Hate school. and the peasants rejoice....yay!
-el goato
------------------
