Eh. I've never cared much for Pheobe, and now I feel vindicated. This is what I think happened. Grade 9 comes around, people are hooking up, Joe confesses his love to Pheobe. Feebs, then being a typical 9th grade girl says oh yes, that's very nice and all but my goodness who _is_ that older gentleman over there? Now maybe Joe was torn between Hel

But she has Iain still... which is why it's apparent that Alison's shagging up with him

Hee...that wallaby spawn. I like Iain.
But it's impossible. Alison is a lesbian. Probably. Maybe. Ok, so I have no idea.
T.W.

Now, don't get me wrong, I feel very very sorry for Pheobe and appreciate how badly her position sucks. Nor do I propose the simple "Geez, get over it." solution. Like I said, the only way she can get through it is if she and Joe lock themselves in a room and don't leave till everything they want said is said. Until then, it will eat them both from the inside.
And Like Pimple and Steig said, it isn't all her fault. I have a feeling that Joe was being something of a twit himself, and the family problem is _certainly_ no small part of it. My heart goes out to anyone in such a situation.
Still - I don't like Pheobe. (Or rather, the character is not the kind of person I would enjoy talking to) As Colostomy said, what she needs is someone who cares about her, someone to make her feel special. Ryan tried that and she threatened his life and basically treated him like shit. That is what I don't like about Pheobe. She has all of this pent-up emotional trauma because she was shafted in a relationship, but she deals with it by being even meaner to others. In the end, that just makes everyone's lives worse, and you end up hurting the nicest and most undeserving. It's like going to the beach and kicking down sandcastles because you're in a bad mood. I can understand that, but I can't like it.
In the end, Pheobe (like all of the characters) is incredibly realisitic, and I love that. I enjoy reading and I am anxious to find out what happens next (and I really do hope that Pheobe ends up happy) but until I see some deeper revelation, I'm not going to be a huge Pheobe fan.
T.W.
Of course, I'm probably just projecting. Like I said - I've dated this personality type.
[This message has been edited by TW (edited 04-19-2001).]

Poor Pheobe!
The poor girl has had a tough time of it. Whether it was her own fault or not she's still hurting from it. And the fact that it was partly her own fault only makes it hurt more.
I think self loathing is way more damaging for an individual than loathing someone else, you can avoid other people for a start.
Anyway Pheobe needs to trust someone and she needs to let someone help her with what happened. Her only friend, Ceilidh, is, ironically, the only person who can't really help her with what happened because she wasn't there.
I hate people who say 'Geez, get over it,' getting over it isn't that easy.
Pheobe may be selfish but that is understandable.
I like Pheobe, poor girl.
Pimple.

Poor Phoebe.
She is messed up, all right. And she messes up anybody who ventures nearby. It is easy to be angry at her for that, but personally I feel far more sorry for her than angry at her.
Now, what she needs is a boy- or girl-friend that can show her what a good relationship can be like.
I don't know enough about Iain to know if he could do the job, but maybe... maybe...
Alison could do it if she was interested. (And it would do her good as well, I think)
------------------

The only problem with therapy relationships
is that oft times the person who needs
one is so negative that they push everyone
away. What they really need is someone
to pay attention to them and make them feel
special. It is easy to get angry at
everyone else at the world when people
are hooking up, and no one seems to want
to play with you.
-Phil

A quick note: Whatever happened, Phoebe's probably not going to wind up being the villain. Or if she was, she's going to somehow stage a miraculous recovery. Josh has stated at least a couple of times on BBS and IRC that Phoebe's going to (soon?) be his favorite character.
------------------

Congrats, Sertrel, you have just won 15 Afterlife Points! I have no idea what these are good for, as they were given to me by a man with a nervous twitch who kept saying they were after him.

Somehow the words "I'm so pretty! I'm so pretty!" seemed like a very un-Feebs phrase, so in order to blow my mind I pulled a smiling Feebs from the archives, (15 Afterlife Points if you correctly guess which one!) colored her, stuck her in front of a mirror and made her say the afore mentioned phrase.
