Dan's Collected Hints

Postby Toptomcat on Thu Jun 02, 2005 5:50 pm

Dan likes giving hints and 'extra stuff' about the story while on the forums, posting under the SN 'darkshive.' Here's a summary of all the story points, hints and extra detail he's given us on the Keenforums: if you find one I don't have, tell me and I'll include it.

Grace's antennae are truly hair-covered antannae, not TK protrusions of the hair or a unique hairstyle. They're the strongest part of her body, very flexible, and very soft.

The 'bulbs' on the ends of Uryom antennae serve some sort of purpose, granting 'advantages and disadvantages' that Grace does not have.

Grace can adjust the length of her antennae.

Female Variant 1 does not affect hair length: other Variants, like 5, do.

Eliot's mother is less than 40 years old.

Nanase, Eliot and Ellen can sense power or 'chi' just like Greg does, just less reliably and accurately.

The transformation beam works in two stages: the main beam 'tags' the target and may do neccesary preparation, while the smaller, spiralling beam then hits and causes the actual effect. Dan only draws the beams together for convenience.

There will be the party, then two school storylines which will run simultaneously, then a storyline in which Tedd meets Grace's family. That storyline may also involve the exploration of Ellen's TF-beam, or that may be addressed in a different storyline.

Grace has a backless shirt for Jeremy forms, so the spikes don't ruin it.

The first floor of Tedd's house has a definite architectural layout (front doors by the stairs, turn left you get the room with the sofa they're always on, you can go from there to the kitchen, you can reach the stairs to the basement through the kitchen, etc). The second floor is, as of yet, more fluid. There is a lot of space unaccounted for on the wall to the left of the door in Tedd's room (when facing into the room).

The TF guns, though very energy efficient, eventually do need to be re-charged. It involves matter/energy conversion, so the more mass added in a form the faster the depletion of the charge.

Sarah will most likely never get zapped with FV5, due to Dan's aversion to using her for cheesecake.

The only religion that Dan's interested in giving 'screen time' is Justin's Buddhism (see beginning of Night Out, pt 1)...and Justin isn't a very good Buddhist. He will generally avoid the issue with that possible exception.

Anyone who becomes pregnant while TFed into female form is locked into that form until the pregnancy is over, due to Uryuom safeguards built into the tech.
In all probability, this will never come up.

Dan's summary of emotional arcs for the party:
Grace: Wants to socialize and have fun, along with potentially other reasons for party
Tedd: Wants to make Grace happy, but is uneasy about being with a male version of Grace
Sarah: Has decided to embrace the concept and do her best to be a good boyfriend
Elliot: Is going along with it for his friends, is effectively the authority figure, and is supplying a mass of hair for Justin to play with
Nanase: Is picking out clothing for both Ellen and Justin, and most likely has a hidden but predictable motive for wanting to attend
Ellen: Relishes the overal idea and the chaos of the party
Justin: Is apprehensive about being female, is wary of Grace, but realizes that being female may give him chances for companionship and acceptance he wouldn't have as male
Susan: Wishes to determine if her prejudices about men are justified

Once Jason's backstory is fully explored, his sexual orientation will not be as much of a story issue.

Gav (the physics teacher who made Nanase stop floating, actually imported from the Keenspace comic Nukees! as the author encourages) will appear more often, though only in joke-centric appearences that aren't crucial for the plot but could for the feel.

Susan's family is rich...that she bothers with a part-time job in a video store in spite of her family wealth says something about her.

Despite looking like a throwaway gag, April 8th's comic is important for some reason in the storyline.

More-or-less any sex-change form using the TF gun will result in bisexuality.

Ted and Grace probably 'fooled around' sexually during Part 1 of the Painted Black arc, though how far they went is open to debate.

The question of how the TF guns impact Uryom religion and culture will be adressed in the comic.

Greater Chimeras, while not totally incapable of legion forms, have a harder time of it than those who are part Lespuko.

The protective Uryom clothing donned in Painted Black Part III are regular Uryom work clothes for physical labor, not anything combat-designed like body armor.

Dr. Germahn and his helpers will be in the main story eventually, but not before a few more NP stories with them occur.

A future "Magic Wand" EGS: NP story will be long and complex for a NP arc.

If Grace practised, she could use her telekenisis to fly- and a good deal better than other uses of her TK, which usually make her pass out.

Not every dream in Ellen's Second Life is being shown.

The principal is not just a crazy random guy: he is very passionate about his school and wants to make it great, which is why he can sometimes get overenthusiastic.

While Dan does not like the hammer jokes as much as he used to, they will feature in at least one future filler, and it will eventually be explained why Susan can summon multiple hammers while all other women are limited to one.

Nanase's 'spectrum' illusion techniques are about as sophisticated as an illusion can get in the EGS universe without the limiting range of movement of the illusion.

There is an asexual character in the comic, but the issue of their sexuality hasn't come up yet.

The ghost dude is absolutely not Damien.

The TF gun has differing duration settings, as earlier revealed: despite the apparent strange uselessness of the month-long setting, it is a minor plot point and will be revealed in the later comic.

There are Grace and Tedd forms in the TF gun.

How Justin and Elliot met will be explained during an upcoming story, along with Justin's history with Melissa, and why Melissa and Noah hang out together.

Dan says that Tedd's angry transformation of Eliot in Part II of Sister seems out of character and unusually impulsive, and is thus 'highly questionable and suspicious.' Make of that what you will, though it may be a red herring.

The next big, dramatic story close to "Painted Black" is a while off, will be more emotional, not nearly as long and will primarily involve only two of the main characters rather than all of them.

Quote: "However, I personally use Omega in reference to hidden/powerful forms of characters, such as the Omega Goo, and Omega Grace. Omega ____ will blow a few minds."
Ah, cryptic Dan.

Justin may or may not have multiple siblings, as may Nanase and Sarah, but they won't show up unless they impact the story.

In any dimension where both Tedd and Eliot exist, at least some sort of love exists between them (simply showing up as a strong platonic friendship in the main universe's case)

Damien has left more messes in his wake than the fiasco with Grace and company.

For whatever reason, Eliot's use of the crazy 'za?' exclamation will be adressed in a very silly way in an upcoming NP comic.

Shrink soda will feature in the storyline sometime in late 2005 or 2006.

Noah has a future roll to fill in the story line that, at least to Dan, seems to be a void that he is eager to explore when the time comes.

Dan's words on Nanase's 'fairy doll' spell: "Anyway, it is possible for the fairy doll spell to require a small upkeep of energy from Nanase, but it's not required. Try to guess what could result in an energy upkeep, and how it might be important. The answer will be revealed in a future comic. "

Several goo cells/demon nuclei were sent out to other dimensions by Lord Tedd: none have succeeded, and the goo confronted in this continuity was the worst, or at least one of the worst, cases of the goo.

Nanase's magic is introverted, meaning she can only do things to herself... thus far, anyway. She can modify her ki illusions with magic, fly, inhabit a fairy doll... none of these things directly affect anyone else.

Transformed states only automatically equal greater power if a person lacks real combat training. If a person has actually trained to fight properly with their body, a form that's too radically different could be more of a hindrance than the automatic boost it would be to someone with no training. Elliot adapted quickly to the cat form, as it's almost the same as his regular form (except for greater balance and claws; his tail instinctively adjusts to achieve balance, and doesn't require his being used to it). The Jeremy form increases bulk, and the tail is less flexible. It's a great boost to someone who wouldn't fight well normally, but to others it can be like fighting with strap-on weights.

Variant #4 is essentially variant #5 without additional hair growth.

Jeremy has no planned, complex backstory: if he gets an origin later, it'll be kinda spur-of-the-moment.

Dan really, really likes the period of stories he has planned post-Painted Black (which presumably includes the current storyline)

Transformation can heal wounds to some degree, but it causes extra fatigue in those naturally able to do it. No word on the possibility or effect of such healing with artificial methods, though.

The TF gun can definitively only transform living things- it can't effect clothing, not even slightly. On the other hand, magic used to the same purpose (Ellen, anyone?) could potentially transform clothing and the like.

In terms of flexibility and power, EGS magic will generally beat technology in any area where they do the same thing (see above). Dan mentions that a combination of the two is possible, to good effect.

While the 'Goonmanji' storyline is non-canon, some aspect of it may find its way into mainstream continuity.

The fourth figure in the first panel of the July 14, 2004 comic is not Damien.

At some point there may be a storyline about trying to apply science to the magic in El Goonish Shive. Dan knows what he'd do, it's just a question of whether or not he goes through with it.

The main universe gets an atypically high amount of interdimensional travel, possibly due to the interference of some outside agency, but definitely for SOME reason.

Time travel per se is impossible in EGS, but there may be alternate dimensions with similar conditions but that are further along or behind in events. These dimensions are likely to not be exactly the same, but would appear to be so to someone not looking too closely.

After Grace's birthday party, there will be some sort of scene involving Grace and Rhoda.

If EGS characters see a movie in theaters, it will be a fictional movie. This is to prevent them from being 'stuck' in a specific time period that moves slower than real time, causing continuity problems for Dan.

In the Alpha universe of Lord Tedd, transformation is common to the point where TF-gun type devices can be bought freely at retail markets.

Dan is toying with the idea of a storyline that will permanantly get rid of the hammers and parody Star Wars: Episode 1.

Susan's sword-summoning will be explained in the future.

Eliot's prominance in the storyline will increase once the mysterious floaty mastermind-type ghost plot thread is resolved.

Part IV will have several climactic moments.

Dan seems to have given a lot of thought to the green shadowy thingum in his Beings of Shadow background, suggesting that they're going to show up in the comic at some point. The green shadow being thrives on uncertainty, has a reason for doing so, is female, has a more-or-less randomly morphing shape, and is a single being with both of the bodies pictured.

Grace's base form may have fireproof fur.

Nanase's and Susan's magic will be explained in a future story arc. Nanase's will be explained first, which will lead into Susan's.
Incidentally, their magics are not the same in nature and potential.

Tedd has self esteem issues, and often gains self-esteem while in other forms.
(This would seem to be obvious, but I included it to make it clear that Dan sees this as a general rule rather than the more specific 'Tedd is more confident when in female forms that might be inferred from comics.)

Lespukos share a common ancestor with Uryoms.

Dan cares a lot more with how EGS looks like as a whole (in the archives) than for day-by-day pacing.

There will be less transformation in general in the main EGS storyline after the party, and there will be less having all of the characters together at once (which is the primary reason for there being two schools and having different combinations of characters enjoy different things). Grace will be the only character who will transform on any sort of regular basis for a while, regardless of the TF gun and Elliot's abilities inherited from the diamond.

In the world of EGS, purple, green, red, pink, and blue are all naturally-occuring hair colors. Liz, the minor-yet-popular character who was smoking and in the locker room in Sister, is a natural green. Tedd's father is a natural blue, etc.

The current pair of amnesiac immortals aren't the only immortals that will be and/or have been seen in the comic.

The immortals will take a while to explained. Once they ARE explained, however, several other things will be explained as well. (I personally suspect Nanase and Sarah's magic.)

Fairy doll trivia:
When a fairy doll is occupied, it is completely anatomically correct; it's basically a tiny human body with tail, wings, and special fairy powers (which includes flight; the wings themselves add extra control, but aren't enough to fly).
When not occupied, the dolls are more anatomically correct than most, but still not 100%. Basically, whereas a Ken doll would be totally flat in that area, a male fairy doll would have a bump there that would make it look anatomically correct with clothes on, but wouldn't look anatomically correct if the clothes were removed from the doll.
And yes, Dan did anticipate this question and reached this conclusion in advance. What that says about him, he don't care to speculate.
If you're transformed, the doll created will match the transformed state, and will stay that way. What matters is the form at time of creation, not occupation.
Nanase can make multiple dolls to 'jump' into, but she doesn't have much of a choice which doll she occupies. When she uses the spell, she either occupies the doll closest to the person she's trying to contact, or a new one is made. If multiple dolls are approximately within the same proximity, it will be random.

V5 results in increased sensitivity if used on an already female target.

Quote: "I love the intimate possiblities that Grace's antennae offer, be it an additional way to simply hug, or a new way to massage people... and that's not even taking into account the telekinetic capabilities (which are underdeveloped in Grace's case when she's not in her Omega form, but with some practice...)"

Magic explained:
Sensei Greg's 'anime-style martial arts' share a 'spiritual source' with magic, but different rules and limits apply.
There are different varieties of Magic. Most are powered from within, and most are unique in many regards to the spellcaster. This means that the fairy doll spell is unique to Nanase.
Those who use pre-made magical devices (such as magic wands) use such things as conduits for their own magical energy. The spell casted can be one that was originally unique to the item's creator: in other words, Nanase could theoretically create a magic wand that enabled someone else to cast the fairy doll spell.
Nanase does not naturally have offensive spells for the time being, which could change if she gets into enough real fights, but she could potentially cast such spells if the proper conduit was provided.

Books as conduits in EGS are better from an information standpoint as everything you need to know should be right there and can contain more spells, but wands and the like are capable of actually amplifying the magic, and are therefore often better if one can deal with having less spells and seperate instructions.

Due to the amplifiying nature of wand and staff-like constructs, one who cannot normally use magic might be able to cast magic with them, meaning both Tedd and Nanase could use a wand. Books, unless specially made, can generally only be used on their own by the magically gifted, so Nanase could use a spellbook if she found one, but Tedd probably wouldn't be able to.

The ultimate tool would probably be a book with a cover embedded with amplifying jewels and a spine concealing a wand.

One who is proficient with Anime-Style Martial Arts is a good candidate for having magical abilities awakened within them, and one with magical abilities would probably have an easier time than most adapting to the anime martial arts style due to the energy similarities. With this in mind, it might be possible for Elliot to use magic without the need for amplification, just a conduit (so he could get by with a spellbook). Nanase has had her abilities "awakened", so she develops her own spells as natual talents and requires no external assistance to cast them.

Nanase does have guidance for her spells and she does develop new ones as her skills progress (expect RPG leveling jokes in the comic's future), but the exact nature of this guidance is something I won't reveal until it comes up in the comic itself.

EDITOR'S NOTE: From the it can be inferred that the unique magic of a given caster can change. Dan's wording (largely preserved above) suggests that this would be an unconcious or at least non-academic process, developing slowly as changes in the caster's circumstances demand new abilities.

Noah, Rhoda and Liz are three of Dan's favorite characters to draw stuff for.

Dan will expand on the following at some future date (possibly the planned school storylines): the backstory of why Rhoda hangs out with Diane, why Lucy is somewhat resentful of Rhoda, why Rhoda is puppy-like, Noah, Melissa, the head of the student council at North, Tony, Tony's friend, and Liz. The Playah's personality is more or less set in stone, however.

Dan's future villians will not be anywhere near as vicious as Damien- with 'one big exception'.

With the exception of Tedd, Elliot, and Grace, transformations of the main characters within the central storylines will only occur when it's crucial to the plot. The TG aspect of Grace's party would've been abandoned if not for each character getting some form of character development out of it.

The answer to Justin's real question in this comic is 'yes.' It will never be addressed in the comic, verbally or visually.

The TF-gun is not ambidextrous: it is designed for a right-hander.

Direct quote: "If Grace gets enough different forms, legion forms may become obsolete."
What could that mean?

The TF gun has an all-or-nothing transformation method. A partial failure will result in the form having a duration of 0 time, meaning they would effectively only warp a little while being zapped, if at all.

The Dewitchery Diamond considers any magically unnatural transformed state to be a curse.

The medical potential of the TF gun is such a potentially earth-shattering development that Dan intends to address it far, far into the future, if at all. It would end up outing Uryoms in general and snowball enormously.

Tedd will be involved in a bit of future mad-science that does not involve transformation.

Grace may be immune to the dewitchery diamond.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Hmm. Is this a result of being a natural shapeshifter, and thus having no 'wrong' forms, or a natural magic immunity, which would be far more interesting?

Rhoda will be the star of an upcoming NP story about the magic Pig Latin book featured in these fillers. Dan has pretty much the whole thing out, but wants to flesh out three otherwise-minor characters before going ahead with it.

There's likely to be an EGS:NP story (considered to be canon!) that will have shrinking be a focal point of the story, but will have another aspect to it. Dan won't be able to do it for a while, however, as it requires another EGS:NP story (also canon!) to occur first.

Don't overlook this.

Grace's legal full name will be something like "Grace Guyur Sciuridae".

There is a significance to the dissapearence of Susman's perma-blush between this comic and this comic.[/url]

Despite looking like a throwaway gag, April 8th's comic is important for some reason in the storyline.

Really now. Hmm. (For all who don't have superhuman memories--I don't, I looked it up--that's with Tony and his pal talking about the uniforms and about both have the misconception[?] that Tedd is gay.) That's very, very interesting, especially considering ways in which it could fit into the plotline.

There will be the party, then two school storylines, then a storyline in which Tedd meets Grace's family.

Not a dull moment for months. I love this comic.

There is an asexual character in the comic, but the issue of their sexuality hasn't come up yet.

I guess Vlad(ia), though my top choice would be any of Grace's brothers.

For whatever reason, Eliot's use of the crazy 'za?' exclamation will be adressed in a very silly way in an upcoming NP comic.

Tony used it once, too, though I think he's the only one besides Elliot. (As a note, my EGS-loving friend uses that expression ALL the time now. I even caught myself using it the other day. One time we just started saying it back and forth--"za", "za","za","za","za","za","za",... until we both kinda collapsed laughing. Good times.)

Great summary here. And welcome to the forum.

I'm hoping to see a full side story about how Susan and Nanase got their various powers on that trip to paris. I imagine the hammer situation extends from that as well... Perhaps the second hammer is just a different form of her sword summoning magic?

Hmm another Omega form? There are only so many natural shapeshifters, and most only have a couple forms, so this is probably about GST. Unless Vladia picks up some enhanced morphing ability somehow. (Griffin Vladia! Wooo!)

That supports certain theories about Lord Tedd...

Justin, even.

Anyway, here's a few more:
Tedd's dream tells us something of Lord Tedd's backstory, and the order of events in the dream follows the order of events in the Alpha Dimension.
Tedd in Ellen's early Second Life dreams was wearing the same clothes as young Tedd in Tedd's dreams. Unlikely to be coincidence, meaning Second Life is also somehow tied to the Alpha Dimension.
Grace's Omega form is not a legion.

I was careful to stick to only that which Dan himself has specified- it seems a logical inference, but one can never be sure unless he's said so.

That seems fairly specific. It's from the antenae thread.

Okay, I was unclear. I use a scale for this particular part of religion where steady theism is at the top, and the mentioned position of not being able to stand the idea of God and not being able to stand other people doing so (I've run into a few people like this, I'm afraid) at the bottom. So upwards of lowest setting = we can rule that out.

Gah! Now I'm dying to read all these prophecied future story lines!

You don't need to clam up, Dan, you just need about 6 clones to get to drawing =)

Better yet, kidnap some other artists and force them to be your slaves, whilst you sit back and relax.

Wait, what was this topic about again?

Oh yeah. Can't wait to see if those little hints progress into anything.

Regardless, I don't think capitalization is a good way to judge something like that. I'm pretty close to your "aggressive atheist" description and I still sometimes capitalize "God" and "Lord" and stuff. For emphasis or just because I happen to be using it as a proper noun; no hidden meaning.

Locking a subject into a form seems a somewhat complex way to avoid problems from preganancy; simply omitting ovaries or a uterus from the transformed person seems an easier way to handle it.

And Gav's from a Keenspot comic, not Keenspace.

I'd say that Dan's a strong Agnostic. Meaning that if proof presents itself then he's willing to believe, but otherwise he's going to remain skeptical.

Wow....a Bunny has done what some Star Wars fans spend 40 hours a week doing.

BRAVO, sir Cat!

just a side note: while I stand by what I said about not guaranteeing anything listed there, I do still hope to do the "magic wand" NP storyline someday.

You have to watch your EVERY WORD on these forums, Shive...

That depends. It could be that some of the forms would be bred into the gene-pool. While sterilisation is an idea (for instance, Grace cannot become pregnant in at least half-squirrel form, if not others), one has to remember that the TF gun was originally for use by Uryuomc, not for recreational use by Gollumc (very clever, Dan XD).

For genetic diversity, I recommend looking up about the Kroot from Warhammer 40,000 (by Games Workshop). There is a lot of good stuff about how they evolve rapidly, especially in a piece of background in Codex: Tau.
