I'm doing a donation drive for the recent disaster. My new employer will match my donation, so I'm gathering money to donate to the Red Cross. Perhaps you received a little unexpected cash over the holidays?

You can read about the donation drive in my LiveJournal here.

I am offering cookies or cartoons to anyone (in the US) who donates $25 or over.

Let's see what we boardies can do!

Is there any way I cou;d send cash in an envelope or something?
They say in the movies "cut the red wire, cut the blue wire, cut the yellow wire". well guess what? all my wires are green. your move, copper.

I'll see what I can do.

Also, I'm still researching this, but I'm a little concerned about the impact this tsunami had on Singapore, esp. the outlying Islands. Since I think is where Skane currently resides.

I think that area was sheltered by the Malacca Strait, but I'd still like to know if Skane is alright.

Yes, he is okay. He posted on LJ about his sister, who was in a harder-impacted area, and she's fine, too.

It's awesome you're doing the fundraiser. I already made a commitment to give money to the Red Cross through other channels, but thank you for your efforts as well.

Thanks to the generosity of several boardies, we have raised over $300 (not counting the company match). I'm really glad to know such generous, caring people. *grouphugs* ^.^

This will continue for several days. I'll keep you updated on the progress.

Singapore 'merely' felt some tremors and nothing more. Fortunately( or unfortunately rather), the island of Sumatra of Indonesia( the biggest one) acted as a buffer for Singapore( refer to maps to see what I mean).

I must point out though, that Southeast Asia is not the only region to be affected. Sri Lanka is actually more or less the worst hit, in terms of human casualties. Basically all the countries that encircle the Bay of Bengal were affected.

Besides money, you may also want to donate some old clothing. The victims had their belongings literally washed away. Also, online donations is not the only way you can help. Your local community may have a charity drive for the disaster victims.

Again, donations need not only be money, although it will of course, be welcome. Find out from your local charities or any disaster relief group on how you can help out.

Cheers.

That's the best site I've found for information on the seismic event.

The site also offers automated seismic activity updates. There was a 6.0 "aftershock" about an hour ago in the same area.

I thought about that, but the Red Cross mentions the problems associated with material donations and why they don't generally accept them. For those of you who wish to arrange a collection of material donations, there is a list of guidelines on the Red Cross website.

Heh, well, I wasn't actually thinking of the Red Cross. Over here, we have some drives to collect used clothing( among other things) to send to the affected regions.

Hence my comment about local communities.

I'm amazed at what you guys have been able to pull together. And now it looks like the Schlock forum is getting involved, too! Thank you all for your generosity. I am still accepting donations through next week. *another big hug to you all*

The current total, not counting what some people are mailing in, is $450!

Sri Lanka got practically depopulated. :o

Just to cap things off, a whole lot of deaths could have been prevented if there had been adequate warning systems in place...or Western countries who detected the quake had put in the effort to contact authorities in the threatened areas.

Human beings are extremely bad at preparing for disasters. We tend to fall back on "If it hasn't happened recently, it will never happen in a time frame relevent to me".

The USGS predicted that area was at high-risk for devastating tsunamis. They informed the local governments years ago. They chose to do nothing.

Just like the Eastern US has been "warned" of the strong possibility of a giant tsunami in the near future. It's only a matter of time.

This also pairs with its close cousin, "We had one just recently, therefore it won't happen again."

At least through the end of next week. There are some checks coming in via snail mail. I haven't set a deadline yet. I'm going to talk to certain people at work when they get back from their holiday travels, then figure that out. Probably around the 11th or 12th, but I'll post before then.

Hmmm... I went and gave as soon as news broke, and gave again through another friend who was getting matching donations. (And I got 3 more birthday presents of gifts to relief funds!). I'm going to scrounge together something and send it your way. My disposable income is running a tad low right now though.
