The current storyline

Am I correct in thinking this is the longest continuous storyline since the comic started?

actually there have been several longer than 36, with the longest being 'birthright', at 66. usually, when ian can see the end, he puts in the total number, so this one may still be in the running.

True, but really The Stuff of Legends is the same storyline, it was just divided up for convenience.

IMHO this storyline isn't finished until bruno's back to banditing like any good outlaw :)

so yes... this mega meta storyline has been the longest so far =)

ah, yes - but the simplicity of mere banditry is more bruno's style.

For how long has the 'Bruno the king' been going on? When it started, I never expected it to last more than a few months.

He's been king for over a year now. It was foreshadowed near the end of the Croatoan storyline, but I don't think even Ian expected it to go this long when he did it.

It's impressive that Ian's been able to carry the storyline this long, though. Perhaps the main reason for this is that it's relatively unimportant that Bruno is the king. The characters are doing things that are in line with what they've always done, but the situation is a little different than usual. Most of this stuff could have been done without Bruno being king, though it would require different justifications. Because of this, the things we really enjoy about the strip are preserved, and they should be preserved when Bruno goes back to regular old banditing (which looks to be by the end of this storyline). I think that's really the key to successfully pulling off a major, long-term change... when it doesn't change what's really important.

Anyways, that's just my rambling thoughts. Anybody else is free to toss in their own.

A agree it's worked well. However, I'm wondering what the 'change back' will bring.

For better or worse, Bruno will still be very high-profile, and probably stuck with with powerful enemies. (Or possibly allies)

It's hard to see how he could go back to being an ordinary crook after this.
I mean government officials get generous pensions specifically so they don't have to go back to being an ordinary crook. ;)

oh, xerxes will probably get his job back - gotta have _some_ figurehead in charge, you know.

and i imagine the new king will come up with some scheme to use bruno's pension to pay for the damage to the kingdom....well, it _was_ on his watch.

I sort of like non-king Xerxes. He reminds me of a few old Yorkshiremen I know.
