A Word From Your Benevolent Dictator

Postby The Gneech on Sun Jul 07, 2002 8:25 pm

*ahem* Is this thing on? skweeeeeeeeee

Ladies and gentlemen, jungloids, visitors, and anybody who doesn't fall into one of those categories:

I should like to post a word or two about message boards in general, and THIS message board in particular.

Now as a rule, I prefer to let public discussion run its natural course (or natural discourse, as the case may be). I have always resented being a member of an online community where moderators were throwing their weight around, declaring this person "banned" or that thread "off topic." The way I see it, the fact that people have a common interest in ... whatever the topic at hand may be ... inherently makes a discussion more or less appropriate to the board, even if it isn't directly on topic.

To that end, I have made it a policy to only "moderate" the boards by kicking out spammers, obvious trolls, and blatantly rude or threatening people, and adopting a lasseiz faire (is that spelled right?) attitude towards the rest. Besides prefering that for philosophical reasons, I'm also just plain lazy and don't feel like playing Ettiquette Cop.

Furthermore, I have created my works with the intention and hope that they should amuse, move, and inspire people; to that end, I am pleased to see fanfics, debates on the subtle (or not-so-subtle) shadings of characterization, the ramifications of plot, and so forth.

However...

I do have certain standards that I would like to maintain. SJ and NN both are for the most part upbeat, friendly, and good-natured creations, and people who are attracted to the strips for that reason are likely to expect the same general atmosphere when they enter into a discussion about it.

Thus, I respectfully request that folks who wish to enjoy and use this forum, observe a few basic codes of conduct. There's nothing here that shouldn't be basic good manners, and there's nothing here that's all that difficult under most circumstances.

No name calling, please.

This is pretty basic. If you have something nasty to say to someone, and you absolutely, positively, cannot live another day without spewing your venom at them, then do it privately, via e-mail, private messages, or whatever.

That's a mighty long nose you're looking down, there.

Saying things that are smug and self-satisfied at the expense of other people generally makes you look worse, not them. "You must have a rotten life," "you must not be a very happy person," or the ever-popular "you have my pity" may feel vastly profound when you say it, but more often than not, turns out to only be half-vast.

Religion, politics, the weather, favorite foods...

I don't want to ban topics by genre; but keep in mind that these are all very personal subjects, and many people take them very seriously. If you want to talk about them, all right, talk about them, but do it in a friendly way. Don't gang up on people, don't insert yourself into somebody else's argument, and most importantly, don't go off half-cocked. I have seen more people get offended by what they think people said, than I've ever seen people deliberately try to be offensive.

For the record, everybody on every side of all these issues firmly believes that:

A) They are right;
B) Theirs is the minority opinion; and
C) That they are persecuted for that reason.

Everybody. Regardless of the reality of it.

And so, everybody is constantly on the defensive. Just for fun, next time you get in a debate, try pretending that you're wrong, you are in the majority, and that you're persecuting your opponent. You might be surprised by the result.

Stay frosty.

If you are hurt, pissed off, annoyed, or devastated by something on the boards, then don't respond to it for 24 hours. Period. Because in the heat of the moment you're likely to throw your brains out the window and start ranting a la Leona Lioness. It happens to everybody; I'm an offender myself. But this is very important.

PG-13 if you please.

If you think a comment may be too rude, too salacious, or just plain too raunchy, you're probably right. Yes, SJ deals with "adult" topics from time to time, and it's certainly appropriate to discuss such things. You can't have characters waking up in bed together, same-sex smooches, and so forth without there being a certain level of "adult" sensibilities involved. Just keep it low-key and friendly-like. :) Off-screen snugglebunnies are fine and dandy ... indecent proposals in the halls are not.

Thank you for your time. :)

Hopefully, this is all that will need to be said on the matter. I'm not looking to chastise anyone, nor to add more fuel to already-burning fires. I want people to be here and enjoying pleasant conversation about my comics -- or failing that, just enjoying pleasant conversation with other people who like my comics, even if that's not what they're talking about at the moment.

As a general rule, I like to use a light hand when things start going awry. If things get too out-of-hand, I will take more drastic measures; I've had to in the past. But I don't really want to do that. All it does is make everybody unhappy.

I'm often the first one to start getting out of hand, sorry boss.
Parachute? Nah, don't worry. Falling, you see, is a harmless action. Now what you need to worry about is that equal and opposite re-action. THOSE can be tricky.

Now, now, don't go around apologizing for things you didn't do! :)

Steve Irwin ... hmm ... I don't know the name, but the face must be familiar. ;) I feel like I should be saying "Crikey!" but that's Jeff Corwin, isn't it? I can't remember which is which.

Nevertheless, thanks! 8)

It's easy to mix them up, they're both insane caucasians with frighteningly short pants who run around in the wild holding up venomous snakes by the tail for the camera..

Just to keep it straight, Steve Irwin is the insane Aussie, and Jeff Corwin is the insane American.

Actually, I sometimes wonder if Jeff is just pretending to be crazy to make for better TV. Steve is obviously a genuine nut. :D But a good kind of nut; more "Howling Mad Murdoch" crazy than "Charles Manson" crazy.

Steve Irwin v Jeff Corwin

Postby Angel kitten on Wed Jul 17, 2002 10:21 am

Well, to be correct, Steve Irwin tends to go for the crocs than snakes.. though he does dabble in them. Watching him leaping off a boat, which is carrying his wife and dog.. suey is cute.. if not as much of a nut as her owner, and diving head first into croc infested water just to grab a croc, throw it into the boat say "Crikey, ain't he a beaut!" give it an good gorking at then throw it back, only to dive in after a bigger one...

Where as, Jeff Corwin runs away after getting attacked by birds... THAT was funny.. though watching Steve get bitten on the nose by a frilled lizard after saying the frill is saying "Stay away from me or I'll bite ya" hehehe

Anyway Jeff seems to me more of a pansy than Steve, though not sure if Steve's daring is more madness than bravery.

I mean, Jeff, being sensible would use a harness and safety equipment though Steve being a complete nutcase would just do it.. and if he fell.. he would probably make a song and dance about it... lunatic...

anyway... I'm rambling...

Hmmmmm I'm not sure about John Inman, he was the pansy Leader in my opinion.. funny to though hehe. "I am Free.." *cough* yes, I have a very sad life.. well to an extent that I know and watch TV programes before my time.. which considering I was born in 1983 and tend to watch old Mangas, Doctor Who, Basil Brush and various other things is actually rather sad.. hmm wonder if Tom Baker is gonna do another Aniversary show..

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's the John Inman.. come on.. would you catch dear john holding a spider? no.. I think he's more along the lines of a Blue Peter presenter. Steve tends to go more towards the adult audiance (as witnessed on So? Graham Norton the other night) and the older kids.

Jeff seems to come off as more.. little kiddies.. Sesame Street kinda thing, with guess the wildlife thing thrown into the programe. So I'd go for a Blue Peter presenter for him.

Would I sound terribly picky if I said you read a manga and watch anime? 'cause if so, I won't say it.

Heehee. I remember that. "Are you free mister Humphries?"
But, who could forget Tom Ballard and Diana Trent?
Or even Hyacinth Bucket (it is pronounced bouquet).
"Oh, no it's the bucket woman!"

I also remember one called "Open All Hours" that one was way before my time. = P

I remember watching open all hours too... one particular episode that pops to mind was the one where he tried to create his own firelighters... hehehehe

And I always though An anmie is a series with shabby tyical big eye drawings like Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Dragonball Z etc.. while the Manga's were the films they show on sci-fi at midnight (though they have stopped doing them her.. *curses British TV*)
However you can read both in the form of comics (Though the Manga's tend to be more... erm.. adult related)

And can you believe this!? Steve Irwin has a movie now!!! .. now we can watch him make a fool of himself on a bigger screen and for longer...

Actually, "manga" is Japanese for "comics", and "anime" is Japanese for "animation". Not surprisingly, they just adopted the English word. :) But no one outside of Japan gets it right, except for obsessive fans.

*looks at self* Hey, wait a minute, I got it right. :D

On the Croc Hunter front: I haven't seen it yet, but a friend who has says it's basically an episode of the TV show with a really cheesy movie plot wedged into it. There is humor, but much of it is unintentional, and mostly due to Teri Irwin's complete lack of acting ability.

But the fun thing is, all the croc-wrangling stunts were real. They made use of the various crocodiles at thier zoo, and gave them another crack at eating Steve. I suspect Graham (the biggest and angriest of the lot) kind of enjoyed the chance to chase Steve around for the cameras. :) This also points out that Steve is totally mad. But you can't help but watch, since this might turn out to be the last episode.

Wow.. never knew that.. I'll try to remember it for next time :D which means.. if I get it wrong again, you have my permission to whack me :) Though it does leave me stumped as to why my Akira DVD has Manga written on it.. was it based on a comic? oooo and the Crying Freeman film I have.. yes film.. with real actors.. I love that tattoo.. I actually have that tune at the begining of the film, the one playing as the dragon tattoo comes alive.. I watch that film just for that bit.. anyway.. I have the tune on my Chillout Moods CD.. you know, the Tubulars bells one.

Damn.. I just realised I'm babbling.. very few people probably would have no idea what I'm talking about..

Anyway.. The last episode of Steve Irwin!!!??? *grabs by the collar* TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW!? WHO GAVE YOU THIS INFORMATION!!!

And Damn that song is cool!!! Johnny Clegg - Great heart.. very cool song.
Actually is there anyone out there who has ever heard of him?

The "Manga" stamp on your DVD is from the manufacturer (i think) Its the people that get the anime from the studios and onto DVD's arcross the world.

go to http://www.manga.com for a jist of what they do.

aint japanese great! :) nihongo o daisuki desu.

I generally donate a "cameo appearance" in SJ to the charity auctions of various furry cons. Spiked Punch was the first of these; others have included Arden, JBadger and Zero Whitefur, and Galen Wolffitt. I still owe one to T'Chall and to the mysterious un-named fellow who won the cameo at AnthroCon but hasn't e-mailed me to claim it. :)

Under most circumstances, an auction cameo, a comics crossover, or a guest strip is the only way to get one of your own characters into SJ.
