Text of Axe bio pages okayed

Postby Pteryxx on Tue Jan 04, 2011 5:00 pm

Let it be known that today on broadcast, Thunt said okay to us posting the TEXT of the Axe of Prissan bio pages here. If you *ahem* "memorized" what was said on a bio page, please feel free to transcribe it here. Then we can link back to this thread for reference (and rampant speculation!)

The Axe of Prissan page itself is in the Goblins archive: book 3, link 18.

Hotlink to the Axe of Prissan page (darn two-link posting limit): 08122007

Bio of Kevich Gritland, originally posted 7Dec2010 by Tarol Hunt.

---

Kevich Gritland held the Axe of Prissan in his hands. He took a moment to notice how surprisingly comfortable the new, magical armour was. He wondered for a brief moment if the armour's warmth was an ongoing feature or merely the heat of being forced into existence only a moment ago. The Axe itself, which had been a hulking display of size that could, less than a minute ago, be compared in appearance to a large table or perhaps some kind of tower shield on a stick, had changed to match Kevich's more elegant tastes. The shaft had grown in length, while the head of the Axe had shrunk considerably. The magic of the powerful Axe had listened carefully to Kevich's subconscious commands and become a device more suitable to his mannerisms.

The armour, he noticed, was not as... complete on his disease ravaged body as it had been on the previous owner. This was no doubt a result of Kevich's adventuring class. The Axe's magic was greatly amplified by a paladin's power and since Kevich was a fighter/wizard, he gained no such advantage. No matter. The Axe still offered enough power to aid him greatly. Kevich had long ago read about a demon deity trapped within the Axe, but this was of course a fictional tale designed to trick the gullible into handing the item over to some hypocritical paladin.

Preparing to leave the dining room, Kevich waved his hand at the door across from him. His Individual Magical Effect appeared and danced around him as the door swung open in an answer to his magical command. Ethereal fingers glowed with a deep red light and circled Kevich like leaves trapped in a river's whirlpool. All of Kevich's spells had displayed the unnerving visual effect ever since he'd been knocked into the Swampgate by his nemesis, Eldrock Cloudcry.

The Swampgate was a body of murky water that was said by others to connect interdimensionally with a boiling swamp in one of the milder levels of Hell. As a result, the Swampgate housed magical diseases and other unfavorable details. Unknown to Eldrock, Kevich was lucky enough to survive the swamp, but had of course been attacked by dozens of unworldly diseases as well as gaining extra fingers and toes.

Kevich took one last look at Eldrock's corpse before stepping over it and walking toward the room's exit. As he left the room with his new Axe in hand, Kevich remembered wondering if the poisons made from the unexplored waters of the Swampgate would kill a paladin. A smile formed on his dry, cracked lips as he considered the answer. Absolutely.

How are you ordering these? How are you determining, for instance, that Eldrock Cloudcry came before Cal, and not after Soot?

The first two blocks of AoP wielders are interchangeable but the Soot block is positioned there because of the mention of Takn in Soot's bio.

We won't know for sure until the gaps are filled up.

The bio I am looking forward to is the first wielder of the axe. The paladin who survived the battle with the demon. He/she is a badass to beat all other badasses.

That would lend creedence to the theory I've heard that Kore was the first Paladin to wield the Axe.

I never actually saved that page - anyone know what it said exactly? I read the re-translation back into English and as far as I can tell it said Flejj found the axe during a dungeon crawl in the hands of a dead paladin killed in some trapped room. Strictly speaking, that doesn't mean that paladin ever claimed or used the axe. Heck, that pally may have never even seen it - it could've been placed there in his hands after he died.

commence wild crazy speculation:
Soot knows she is too young to be using such a powerful artifact. She knows a kind and trustworthy wizard who happens to be just a tad ... eccentric. Wizards are eccentric - it's established! Anyway the wizard says he knows where a paladin is where the axe will be safe. Soot says "Hooray!" and hands the axe to the wizard who will teleport to this paladin's location. *teleport noise!* Eccentric wizard carefully places the axe in the hands of the dead paladin in the middle of the trapped room. "Safe and sound!" he declares as he teleports home satisfied with another job well done! Then he gets back to his experiments in creating a magical dust made from angel residue that he hopes will make everybody in the world happy forever. The End.

FLEJJ HILLMOVER
The Hillmover clan were dwarves known for their legendary mining ability as well as their unwavering intolerance of weakness. Deformed or incapable members of their clan were banished or killed without exception.

When Flejj was old enough, he braided his beard and set off to adventure as a paladin. It wasn't long before he'd joined up with an adventuring party and was dungeon crawling and gaining levels.

During one such adventure through an ancient dungeon, Flejj found himself drawn to a source of evil so powerful, it caused his skull to ache and his nose to bleed. When Flejj and his group reached the intense evil, they discovered it to be the Axe of Prissan clutched in the hands of a dead paladin, killed many years ago by a deadly, trapped room.

As a paladin, Flejj claimed the axe and continued on his adventuring career. Months later, that career was brought to a sudden end as a dwarf called Kore killed all of Flejj's companions in an effort to claim the axe as his own. Flejj battled Kore but was unable to defeat him. During Flejj's escape, he received an injury that permanently cost him his hearing.

After his escape, Flejj returned to his clan to retire as an adventurer and keep the Axe of Prissan hidden from Kore. However, he knew that the Hillmover clan would not allow him to return if they knew that he was now deaf and so Flejj decided to keep his disability a secret by often keeping to himself and quickly mastering the ability to read lips. All went well and he eventually married and became the father of two children.

It was during a trip with his family to a nearby underwater lake that Kore caught up with him. While Flejj was preparing a dinner of freshly caught fish, Kore approached from the shadows and killed the children and their mother, vaguely exclaiming that they were “evil”. Flejj was unable to hear his family as they screamed for help thirty feet behind him.

This began the second battle between Kore and Flejj. Again Kore was the more powerful combatant and again Flejj barely escaped will his life. This time by using his knowledge of the surrounding terrain and luring Kore onto unstable footing that collapsed under the weight of his heavy armour, causing Kore to fall into a dark chasm.

To mark his own failure to protect his family, Flejj shaved his face and vowed never to grow a beard again. He took the axe of ppissan and set out in an effort to keep it from fore. Since that day, his individual magic effect not only glowed a faint shade of blue, but appeared as lake water “raining” upward from all around him.

In the years that followed, Flejj encountered, befriended and joined forces with a human paladin named Dri Featherknife who Flejj eventually passed the axe to.

SOOT
“A paladin need not know that she is a paladin. She only need know what must be done"
~Kelstride Blackbringer, father of four year old Felsibeth “Soot” Blackbringer.

Kelstride Blackbringer was so named because of his job as the town chimney sweep. Due to his work, he was often covered in ash and would inadvertently leave black footprints or handprints wherever he went. But it was his years as a paladin that he is most remembered for. His bravery and kind heart earned him the right to carry the Axe of Prissan.

With the axe, Kelstride was able to save many innocent lives and defeat evil on many occasions. After years of adventuring, he married and had a daughter named Felsibeth Blackbringer. Those who remembered Kelstride's days of chimney cleaning lovingly called his daughter Soot. It wasn’t long before the name stuck.

Far to the south, the Ketaa kobold clan was relocating after being betrayed by a large group of Brassmoon's elite guard. In exchange for a promise of safety, the Ketaa had given the humans their most famous member and future chief. A kobold called Takn, who was eventually brought to the dungeons of Brassmoon. The humans broke their promise and launched an attack on the massive Ketaa warcamp anyways, forcing the retreat of over three hundred kobolds.

When Soot was four years old, she was travelling through Tenoak Forest with her parents in the family’s covered wagon. It was a trip they’d made times before, so they were taken off guard when three hundred kobolds charged over the hills and swarmed the small wagon. Kelstride, wielding his magical axe, fought as well as he could, but eventually fell to the unrelenting wave of claws and teeth.

Soot did not yet know what a hero was. She didn't understand the word champion and couldn't grasp how to measure bravery or strength of will. She had never heard the word paladin spoken before. Though when she grabbed the axe from her father's dead hands and swung it wildly in an attempt to keep her mother alive, that's exactly what she was. Some speak of a rare breed of paladin that does not choose to become so, they are chosen.

The axe, now without an owner and reacting to Soot’s class, shrank to match her size and strength. She was suddenly coated in magical armour, instantly designed to fit her physical limitations.

Soot fought the kobolds for only a few moments before the monsters continued through the forest. It seemed that the kobolds were not targeting the wagon, it just happened to be in their path as they moved in search of a new home.

Kelstride was never forgotten by his town and Soot grew to become a legendary paladin and the youngest to ever wield the Axe of Prissan.

DROSE
The Living Golem

In a small village called Tinyoaks, a reclusive wizard named Belemot spent years building and improving upon golems. With his astounding intellect, Belemot was able to create golems more complex and capable than any seen before.

When Belemot ran low on the specialised stone needed for his creations, he'd sometimes destroy one of his less valuable golems and recycle the materials into a new project. This had always worked well, but when the day came to destroy Drose, one of his less advanced golems, Belemot was surprised to see his creation asking not to be destroyed.

Convinced that these actions were a simulation of life and not actual life, Belemot ordered Drose to cooperate in his own destruction. For the first time, Drose refused his master's orders and ran. The golem exited Belemot’s modest castle and entered the public streets of Tinyoaks. The civilians, having no idea that such frightening creations existed in their village, reacted with fear and hatred toward the twelve foot, stone creature.

Drose, understanding how fragile humans were and not wanting to cause any of them harm, ran from the forming mob and into a cabin located at the edge of the village. The inhabitant of the cabin was Eled of the east, a retired paladin and owner of the Axe of Prissan. Eled befriended Drose and hid him in his cabin for weeks. During that time, Eled taught Drose how to be a paladin and eventually passed the magical axe onto him.

As Drose claimed the axe as his own, the magical effect of adhering itself to its new owner "glitched". The axe reacted to Drose's claim, but since the golem had no living body for the armour to customise itself to and form around, the axe’s magic became confused and merged with Drose. The axe and accompanying armour had become one with the golem.

Before Drose and Eled could study this unexpected effect, they found themselves surrounded by dozens of mindless golems all attempting to destroy Drose and return his component materials to the wizard Belemot. The two paladins fought through their attackers and Drose was able to escape into the forest.

Drose went on to become an accomplished paladin who, due to his unique connection with the Axe of Prissan, was able to tap into its magics in ways that no other owner of the axe ever had before or since. However, after many years, Drose began to feel the mighty demon trapped within the axe begin to gain control over his body's actions due to the accidental merging. He began his search for the axe’s next owner.

Dqose eventually passed the axe onto a chimney sweep named Kelstride Blackbringer who like Drose, went on to become a heroic paladin.

DRI FEATHERKNIFE
The human adventurer known as Dri Featherknife started out her career as a rogue. It wasn't until later on that she found herself better suited to the role of a paladin and decided to take that class. Her methods of upholding justice, although slightly darker and perhaps even underhanded, were no doubt effective and many innocent lives were saved thanks to Dri's bravery and selfless actions as a paladin.

Although Dri excelled on the battlefield, she lacked the people skills that many paladins considered second nature. More than once, she'd saved a small village, only to turn the joyous praises of the villagers into scowls or leave a child whose life she'd just saved, crying in its mother's arms.

The only creature that Dri truly got along with was Whitewind, a blind pseudo dragon whom she'd rescued from two trolls. Because of Whitewind's incurable blindness, he rarely flew and instead depended on Dri for many things.

After Dri had received the Axe of Prissan from the dwarf, Flejj Hillmover, she'd continued fighting evil and protecting the innocent with great success. It wasn't until she'd uncovered a plan to frame the head sheriff of Brassmoon City for murder in an effort to have him executed that she met her end.

Two individuals named Dellyn Goblinslayer and Saral Caine were int he midst of framing the sheriff when Dri had discovered their plot and attempted to stop them. A battle ensued and with the help of her axe, the paladin was able to maintain the upper hand. It was Dellyn who noticed Dri's strong emotional attachment to the white pseudo dragon. During the battle, he grabbed the dragon and held him hostage, demanding that she lower her arms and surrender. Even as Dri pleaded for the life of her only friend, Saral Caine attacked, killing her instantly.

Dellyn, who loved performing torturous experiments on monsters, had planned to keep Whitewind and learn about the insides of a pseudo dragon. However, the creature managed a lucky swipe with his barbed tail and escaped.

With Dri dead, Saral Caine took the Axe of Prissan for himself.

CAL
"You have the advantage of being able to lie and cheat, something that I will never do. But I have an even greater advantage. After I beat you, I will bask in the ferocity of my victory. Something that you will never do."
-Cal

My name is Cal. I am a gnome from the frozen lands found between the Sibling Mountains. Before I became a paladin, I was a gambler. I am an expert in every card game or game of chance known to gnomekind, and some games that are not. Do not judge me unfairly, though; I have never knowingly lied, stolen, or cheated in any way. I enjoy the thrill of a good card game in the back of some dangerous tavern, but even more so, I enjoy dealing with some evil gambler who tries to kill me and take my winnings. I have the ability to detect evil, but I do not need to use that ability during a card game. Before the end of the second hand, I can always tell who is darkest.

Now I do not gamble for money. I gamble to weed out the evil ones. The ones who will cheat, lie, and inevitably try to kill me. After a night of gambling, I give my money to others who are hungry. Others who, like me, do not lie, steal, or cheat. But unlike me, they are not Cal and so things are harder for them.

I have never been much for dungeon delving, but during one of the few times I was in a dungeon, I found a magical wheel. Spinning the wheel meant almost certain death, but there were slim chances of gaining powerful abilities or magic items. I am Cal. Luck is always on my side. I spun the wheel and gained what is apparently called an enhanced individual magical effect. Now my ice-blue I.M.E. doesn't just look impressive, it actually lowers the temperature around me. Ice forms where I stand. Frost appears on the wounds I give my enemies during battle. I am also immune to any form of cold effect. I like this because it reminds me of my snowy homeland. I have been away from my home for a long time now. My I.M.E. makes me feel like I am back there. Sometimes I will stand out in the rain and watch the puddles around my feet freeze up. I miss my home very much. But I am Cal and so I will be okay.

The lands I travel in now have no snow and lots of humans. I don't much care for the company of adult humans, but I like their young. They're honest and they like games and are closer to my size. It makes me sad that the child humans have never seen snow. But I am Cal and so I fix this problem. I make snowballs and ice for them. I have never seen snow fail to make a humanoid youngling smile.

One adult human that I did like was Jelbin Crae. He was the paladin who gave me this axe. This axe, which is the greatest gamble that I have ever heard of. I carry a demon godling with me that would destroy this realm if it were to escape. I like this game. And since I am Cal and I do not lose games, I am perfect to wield this axe.

Thanks Calista! I forgot the two-links-per-post limit, doh.

Alvarin's translation of Flejj Hillmover's page. The original post is (here).

Alvarin wrote:I want to apologize before Tarol for murdering his page, but here is my re-translation to English:

Dwarves of the Hillmover clan are known not only for their amazing mines, but also by their full rejection of any weakness. All handicapped or malformed are mercilessly exhiled or killed.
Upon reaching adulthood Flejj braided his beard and begun adventuring as a palladin. Soon he joined an adventuring party, whith whom he begun clearing dungeons and gaining experience.
During one of these dungeoncrawls, he felt such powerfull evil emanation, that his head started aching and his nose bleeded. The source of emanation was an axe, held by dead paladin, who died in a traps-filled room many years ago.
Flejj has taken the axe and continued adventuring, but just several month later his friends were killed by Kore, who tried to take the axe for himself. Flejj battled Kore, but lost. While fleing, Flejj received an injury, causing him to lose hearing.
Ditching the career of adventurer, Flejj returned home to deter Kore from reaching the axe of Prissan, but his clan would not receive him, if they knew he became deaf, therefore Flejj had to learn read lips, which helped him keep his loss of hearing a secret and even get married and having two childs.
Once he went with his family to rest ashore one of underground lakes, when Kore has found him. While Flejj coocked freshly-caught fish, Kore murdered his wife and kids, screaming something about them "tainted by evil". Flejj didn't hear the screams of his family, even though they died just a couple of meters behind his back.
So begun second fight beetween Flejj and Kore and again Kore was stronger and again Flejj hardly escaped. Utilizing his knoledge of the surroundings, Flejj lured Kore onto thin ledge over a creavice, whick collapsed under the weight of the heavy armour.
As a memento of not being able to save his family, Flejj shaved his beard and vowed to never grow it again. He took the Axe of Prissan and went away, taking it far from Kore. Since then his IME was resembling droplets of blue lake water, dripping upwards.
During his ventures Flejj met a paladin by the name of Dri Feaherknife, whom he later gave the Axe.

I don't remember the "several years" part. I'm pretty sure this part got mixed up in the translation, because this would have been noticed and discussed a lot (since the axe description says the demon breaks free if it's not used for Good in 13 passings of the moon. (Of course, a passing of the moon might be longer than 1/12th of a year, or the axe could have been put there after the paladin died, but I think I would have remembered that detail.)

Edit: I was wrong. The original formulation had "many years", and it was discussed in the original thread about the Flejj page.
So the following logic applies:
- Goblinslayer's group "Brassmoon Elite guard" existed for seven years. (mentioned in comic)
- It existed when Soot recieved the axe (mentioned in Soot's bio page)
- Soot owned the axe before Flejj.
Thus, during these seven years:
- An unnamed Paladin got hold of the axe.
- The axe was dormant for "many years" with the dead paladin before Flejj found it. (Flejj's page)
- Flejj formed a family while he was in possession of the axe, and he also had time to meet and befriend Dri before he handed it on. (Also Flejj's page)
- Dri held the axe for a while, uncertain how long, but long enough for her to investigate Goblinslayer's plans to frame the Captain in Brassmoon. (Dri's page)
- Saral Caine held the axe for a bit, at least long enough for Goblinslayer to get promoted to Captain. (Comic)

Did all that happen in seven years? Or is there a flaw in any of the steps? Both are possible.

Interesting, though--looks like the axe's imprisonment works even with a dead paladin. If the guy died while performing some sort of good deed, it may well have counted... that must've been one frustrated demon. "Wait... the guy's dead and he's still keeping me penned up?"

I remember the discussion about the "13 passings of the moon" before the demon got out and the paladin being dead for years before Flejj found the axe. People were speculating that years might have fewer months in their world or something. That's one of the reasons I'd really like to see the exact text of that again. Especially with how tight the timeline is, I think it's very possible the axe somehow wound up in that dead paladin's hands after he died.

http://www.goblinscomic.com/01212007/

According to that page, Goblinslayer's version of the Elite Guard was formed less than one year from the current day. Maybe Takn ran into a different version in Soot's day? If the betrayal of Takn's Ketaa clan actually took place less than a year ago, then Flejj's entire story would've been crammed into that short time, along with Dri's. Otherwise, the Ketaa clan was attacked by a different "Brassmoon Elite Guard" than the one GS controlled; or the Elite Guard actually existed before GS, and he simply took it over rather than founding it.
Anyway, if I wanted a complex story led by dynamic characters that aren't easily categorised into facile dichotomies of good and bad with no clear arc or easily predicted outcome, I'd have left the theatre and lived my damn life.

I'd like to point out: 1) That Soot's bio doesn't say she gave the axe away; 2) Flejj's bio doesn't mention the gender of the dead Paladin who had the axe.

Until THunt shows us otherwise, I'm going to assume that Soot is the Paladin who Flejj got the axe from.

Could be that Cal has made one bet too many, and Flejj got the axe from him.

As that page also says, the group had existed for six years before that one year, under the leadership of Goblinslayer and Caine. And while it is possible there was an earlier group with the same name, the fact that they caught Takn and that he was still a prisoner when the GAP came there indicates this group was the same as the one that caught Takn. Also, while it's possible there was a different Elite Guard of Brassmoon and/or a different Takn, that would be adding needless complications to the story (something I don't think Thunt would do).

Actually, it says the PLACE had existed for six years before the last year, not the GROUP. I've always read that as meaning the dungeons themselves where Goblinslayer and Saral Caine did their torturing. My guess is that there has always been an "Elite Guard" but that "after the close call with those damned orcs" Goblinslayer convinced the Mayor to hand the Elite Guard over to him for use as an "army that specialize[s] in wiping out monsters".

I still think Saral Caine and Goblinslayer were the ones that captured Takn with some hired thugs as help, and telling the Kobold Clan they were the "Elite Guard of Brassmoon".

That's the most logical explanation I've heard yet. It gets my vote.

I know this is kinda off-topic, but I just noticed that the axe actually has the quote from the bottom of that page written on it, on the light-grey area of the handle. Surprised I went this far without seeing it.

Also, a fair few of the previous axe owners got to keep their pupils. Dunno if they'll make it into the "final versions" of those pages, though.

Back in December, Thunt showed us his model for the Axe of Prissan, so he always draws the words and the blades in the right place:

Do you have the Flejj bio page? Can you give us the original text?
