Locus coverage

Postby Adam Black on Tue Dec 16, 2008 10:22 am

I was contacted out of the blue by a guy on Facebook named Michael D Hamersky. He wanted a press release on Locus, so he could blog about it. Which kind of blew me away, to be honest. Wasn't something I was expecting. Thanks, Mike!

You can read his blog post here. It's great to see Locus getting some exposure so early on.

I've been putting off promoting this thing whole-hog until a little later. The first issue is just one big bar-fight scene; the real meat of the story shows up in issues 2 and 3, and part of me has been waiting for those to go online before pimping this comic fully. I've found that, when introducing new people to your new webcomic, it's best to have a bunch of pages online already. Saying, "hey, check this out!" when you only have one or two pages up for perusal doesn't really impress anyone.

Well, now that most of issue one is online, I should probably get off my ass and start promoting this thing, right? Right! So any press releases or blog entries will end up being linked in this thread.

If you know someone who would be interested in blogging or writing about Locus, feel free to send them my way!

Glad to see that things are finally starting turn around for you Adam. And all you had to do was Your Own thing. Although I really miss the 4K comic, your new stuff is great.

How far south of Tucson are you. I travel to Tucson quite often to fix planes at Davis-Montham AFB and the Airport at the Jet Center. My associates and I always stay at the holiday Inn on Pala Verde Dr.

Well keep up the good work.

I miss K4K too, to tell you the truth. I was looking over the Christmas story--the one with the Disco Vampires--and forgot how much fun that was!

I'm about 20 miles south of Tucson right now. Next time you're gonna be in town, let me know! That Holiday Inn is about 30-40 minutes from my house...if it's the one I think it is. I used to drive by it every day on my work commute, back when I both lived and worked in Tucson.

Well, it's been awhile since there's been any Locus coverage--or, to be honest, it's been awhile since I've actually gone out and checked.

I got a wild hair up my ass a month or two ago and emailed a bunch of comic- and horror-related blogs to try and drum up some Locus-related noise. Most of them didn't bite, but El Santo from a blog called "The Webcomic Overlook" did a lengthy review of Locus, which you can read here.

It's actually pretty funny, but he seems to be missing the point in spots--which is something I always figured would happen with some readers. He's right on the money in describing Locus in the early issues as "unattractive"--much to my shame. But we've all come to grips with the fact that I can't draw for shit, right?

At any rate, check it out! Feel free to add comments to that post if you like, but do me a favor and keep it civil. And, if you can't be civil, at least be funny.

wow... that was the worst thing I've ever read in my life.

Dude, it doesn't surprise me that El Santo totally missed the point. Have you ever read his review on the dojo?
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwebcomicoverlook.com%2F2009%2F06%2F11%2Fthe-webcomic-overlook-81-ravens-dojo%2F&ei=ey-ESpPyJo-ltgef-eGvCg&rct=j&q=raven%27s+dojo+webcomic+overlook&usg=AFQjCNG-ts6X7_zfjJRaVo7agMAMJ-gWlw
His reviews are poorly written at best.

El Santo is just not a good reviewer. His hero is the infamous John Solomon (don't feel bad if you've never heard of him... He's a hero only to internet trolls and until he wasted his time talking trash about my Godmode run I'd never heard of him either) and while John Solomon was pretty good at the hateful reviewer schtick (translation he could make you laugh while talking utter shit about you), El Santo is like a dollar store imitation. He has a problem I find in most of these guys who like to talk shit to amuse while quasi-reviewing whatever it is they're reviewing- Not enough review to be helpful, not enough humor to be amusing.

Sadly, this does very little good for anyone. If you're not being funny then at least be informative. He spent a great deal of time comparing Locus to other things without actually TALKING about the comic. And when he did talk about the comic, surprise surprise... He got hung up on the boobs. Funny thing is he did the same thing in my comic. Dude... I'll admit that I love me some titties. Their presence doesn't "cheapen" a story though. For fucks sake, that's such a repressed attitude to have. And again, not a good quality for a reviewer to have.

Which brings me to my last point. A webcomic reviewer... I swear to you that I have never once sought out webcomic reviews before reading a webcomic. The whole point of reading reviews is to save money and time. I'll read a ton of game reviews before taking the plunge. 60 bucks is a lot to lose. By contrast a movie ticket costs far less so I'll rarely read a movie review (and yes.. I get burned a lot more at the movies then at the gamestore, but that's because the risk is greater so I approach games far more carefully). Now a webcomic costs NOTHING. I mean most of them. And while it could be argued that a review can still save you time, I'd say that the time wasted reading the review could be spent forming your own opinion based on time spent with the actual product.

That's right, I READ webcomics to see if I like them. Not reviews.

I'm just sorry your email found that loser. Locus is a quality comic, with great art, an interesting story and cast. El Santo is not only trying to fill a pointless role, he's failing at filling that role.

Well, I sent him that email knowing quite well that he's sort of a low-rent version of Maddox or Tucker Max--only with webcomics. That "smartass schtick" seems to work well for blogs, and it's inevitable that someone would try it out with webcomic reviews. I wish him nothing but good fortune with that particular business model, and hope he makes enough money to quit his Day Job at some point.

Man, he ripped you up! I think he did a better job slamming Locus than he did RD. You were right: he could've been a lot funnier.

He's right about one thing, though: you are indeed a rascally little scamp.

Read the "The Webcomic Overlook" reveiw, I gotta laugh becuase it's your 90's like style that drew me in and the grindhouse feel that kept me here.
(And the boobs aren't in my opinion gratu...gr....<WORD> they're neccicary in some cases and flat out non-sexual in most others, i'd say realistic.)

As for getting attention on Locus
Well my friend Dave has his own webcomic (A fairly popular one) and a little while ago him and his co-creater/writer where in a live podcast interveiw on a site called TGT webcomics which by the way was a total blast! (I ruined the interveiw for dave 1 hour and 14 minutes in though...heheheh but it was so his own fault!) Like, i'm not sure how many people listen to it but they get put onto itunes for download and who knows how many people listened to it after that. the podcasts are clean so you can't swear and stuff but I think the plot line and everything should be fine. You can go and talk to them about and schdule and interveiw :) If you do decide to give that a shot, I promise I wont ruin it for you :D I'm going to shut up know becuase I feel bothersome when I talk 0_o;

Well, I'm glad that you stuck around and actually read the story--it's obvious that El Santo did not.

As for the interview...I'll definitely check that out. Thanks! This week and next week are gonna be crazy, though. I have two private commissions to finish up, plus I have to work ahead on next issue to the point where I can take Labor Day weekend off.

Busy busy busy...

Professional reviewers (a HUGE oxymoron) usually have no brains.

Never found one who had.
Hell is other people.

Well, despite that review-that-wasn't-a-review, I actually gained at least one new reader from it.

As such, I hereby declare myself The Winner!

Man, El Santo must be honestly on the end of his celibate road. I tried to read most of both reviews and he criticizes only the boobs usage. The missunderstanding of plot, world and characters, as well as the simpliest fact, that some comics are made for special readers (Hey, is there any Locultist, who dislikes hard music? Or Raven Dojo's fan, who takes that comic seriously?) must be his own speciality, grew over the years of breeding shitty articles that are read by fat assholes, who wouldn't recognize good beer even if it was dancing on their bellies. Because I just can't believe anyone other would find his reports trustworthy.

I only flew over ravensdojo and found it hilarious in it's very own simplicity. Nothing hard to read, just pure theatre of madness, covered with some (im)mature content.

I only flew over Locus and found it more than interesting. It started like bad Kill Bill parody with werewolves and vampires and BOOOOOOOOOBIES (This one is for El Santo), but it changed pretty soon and the more I read, the more I let the story drag me to the center of it's world.

It's just... These reviews should be written objectively, which is inachievable, because no human can be objective when he tries to describe something he read by his very own eyes and tried to think about it in his very own brain. It's allways subjective and that's why I think that people should stick with the style they like. Because that is the right place where they can choose what is bad and what's not.

Btw the best beer is Radegast. Never heard of? Try it ;o)

And that was pretty much the intent of the first three issues--just some wild, mindless fun to get people introduced to the story. I wanted something easy to drop into that was fun for readers to read and even more fun for me to draw.

As for Raven's Dojo...oh, man, I love that comic. It's one of my top three of all time favorites, I swear. Hilarious and crude--and that's always a winning combination in my book.

I was contacted via Facebook by a guy named Decapitated Dan, who wrote up a review of Locus issue 1, which you can read here. Thanks, Dan!

Main site's here. It's obvious this guy loves horror comics--and he did a review of one of my favorites: Doris Danger!

Check it out!
