I suppose in his area, the really hot soak and slow maneuver method is clearly unavailable.

I've been fortunate, only bone I've ever broken is my left thumb. Fortunately (or not depending on one's point of view) it was a torsional fracture (the bone was twisted length wise until it snapped), which left it pretty much set back in place (emergency room doc, thought I hadn't broken it at first, then he re-checked the x-ray and caught a VERY faint shadow). However the only ways to let it heal are to let it naturally reform in it's current position (which I did) or pin it in place and hope it doesn't rotate around the pin.
