Elliot may be strong, but he fails at strategery. Yes, he is able to think quickly on his feet as has been demonstrated here and later on, but that doesn't mean that he comes up with a good solution. He might have been able to make a deduction on which Nanase was real before she hit, however not only was his deduction incorrect but in the process of doing so completely missed that he probably could have used his Tamashii Gekido to cream all three at once.

As a side note, I like the differnt poof fonts in panel three. I think it's a nice little touch.

Yah, Elliot's definitely one to just make everything up as he goes. Luckily he can rationalize it all later. Sometimes. Tedd's the more strategic one.

I would guess that he didn't have enough time to use the Tamashii Gekido.
To me his main error was staying put. He should have made a counterattack against Green (for example) that would carry him outside of the attack range of Red and Blue.

You have a good point.
Also, we have all seen that Elliot is good at thinking on his toes every now and then. I think he could have figured out which one was real if he had a bit more time.

As for me? I would wailed about aimlessly until I hit a solid object.

Crystal: Actually, minus the "aimless" part, that is a viable strategy.

I mean, try hitting one of the images to see if it's real; if it isn't, proceed to the next one. (This is what I do in video games when an enemy pulls a "which one is real" trick.)

Maybe because he really didn't want to hurt her? Remember his dramatic speech somewhere along the lines?

A possibility: anime martial arts focus on the dramatic -- or even the melodramatic. Using the Tamashii Gekido on the images would have been effective but not dramatic. Using it just as Nanase seemed to be about to flatten him, on the other hand...
