[FF] The Roomies & the Navy -- Completed!

Postby Doc Hawkeye on Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:13 am

This is the next chapter in the "College Roomies from St. Hellswhere" story line. It follows more or less immediately after "The First Day of School."

I always used to scoff when I read about authors claiming that their characters occasionally come to life and run off with the story-- no more. This is more or less what happened with Lt. Jerry Wright. I originally intended this to be a relatively short followup to the bombing incident, but Jerry wouldn't let go until I'd written over 20,000 words! This will probably take about 10 chapters to post, depending on where the story breaks naturally-- I should be able to put up a new chapter every few days, as it's all written. Thanks in advance for your comments!

Awesome story, Doc, can't wait for the next installment.

One small quibble; as far as I know the F/A-18 does not carry the Hellfire. Hellfire is laser-guided and used on helicopters. The F/A-18 does carry the AGM-65 Maverick TV-guided antitank missile, though, which would do the same thing. The AGM-84H would also work.

Figures the bugger would have a discussion with Maggie's supplies...

And yeah, characters do run away with you sometimes. Ike McMurray started out as an un-named piece of scenery in a now-abandoned Margaret-centred fanfic and jumped into my head fully formed from there. As Frank Miller put it once; "I blame Marv, the big lug. He wouldn't let me stop writing."

Edited to add: Well, I just re-checked the F/A-18 specs. Apparently the newest varients -do- carry the Hellfire. Apologies.

I've gotten several questions/comments about the F/A-18 and the Hellfire missile. I'm by no means any sort of semi-expert about military issues or technology (I do read Tom Clancey novels, though-- although I've never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express :D). The best info I had suggested that the Hellfire was a helicopter-mounted anti-armor weapon, and wouldn't normally be carried by a F/A-18 against a bunker-type target-- but I couldn't pass up the chance to work a "Hellfire" missile into a "College Roomies from Hell" fan fic.

Well, the Israelis use 'em for assasination, usually launched from F-16s or AH-64s, and they're nasty enough without the help of Margaret's Semtex. They kill the target...and usually a dozen or so people in the immidiate vicinity, more if fired into a building, which is pretty common. The bad part is that the Hellfires are an improvement; they switched from using 500-lb bombs.

And I have to admit, I didn't even catch the pun involved with "Hellfire." Good move!

Yeah, you weren't the only one . . . the stats I found (at Boeing's website) don't list the Hellfire, despite both being nominally Boeing products. And I forgot about the Predator carrying Hellfire.

Thinking about it this morning, I realized that, in any case, it could be explained away as the testing necessary to approve the Hellfire for deployment on the F-18.

Here is the next chapter, "Operation Casanova" I'll try to get a chapter up every 3 days or so. Thanks again for any feedback, and I hope you enjoy this.

Here's the next chapter of "The Roomies and the Navy."

The extra compensation money Mike had wangled out of the Navy came in very handy, especially for the girls. They (in the deadly serious but fundamentally friendly way common to women the world over) strove to outdo each other in the elegance and sexiness of their attire. Marsha took time off from her shopping to ensure that Dave and Roger rented the right kind of tuxedo

Great story. Keep up the good work...hopefully soon!

Horses have an even number of legs. Behind they have two legs, and in front they have fore legs. This makes six legs, which is certainly an odd number of legs for a horse. But the only number that is both even and odd is infinity. Therefore, horses have an infinite number of legs.
When life gives you lemons, do not make lemonade. And for gods' sakes, don't throw them at someone. Instead, think. Think long and hard about what you did to get these lemons. Because if you can get an abstract concept like Life to give you real, physical lemons, you're one step away from the secrets of the universe.

That's always the funny part, isn't it? Any time that April gets to dress up, suddenly everyone recognizes that she's a babe, possibly even more so than Marsha. It's too bad we don't get to see her vamp like that in canon.

^ didn't that sort of happen at the party Mike's dad had?

Jerry seems to have covered all he needs...so what did he miss...?

Here's the fourth chapter. Things are getting a bit hotter...

From then on, Jerry was accepted as den mother and elder brother to the roomies. He toured them around the city, showing them not just the major attractions but the minor jewels that most big cities have but almost nobody knows about. He helped the guys get good seats at sporting events, and he took the girls shopping. Once he took all three of them to the area

Here's the next chapter. We're finally getting down to brass tacks! This segment is PG-13, so be careful about whom you let read it-- i.e., don't let your parents see it without supervision!

Jerry learns here that there are consequences of major orders when messing with this group. He'll go for Marsha next, I suspect.

I'd have thought April, then Marsha, just because then he wouldn't have to deal with Mike...

But given his earlier reaction to April at the dinner and the way he has Mike sidetracked, he may save the best for last.
