Oooh... Enter Karen and Marshall. dum Dum DUM!

-I wonder what it is that Helen's pining for? Dirk? Her old friendship with Charlotte? A position in the alpha's?
-Seems like the rainbow badge is more in ascertion for gay rights than a declaration of Lisa's sexuality. But then again, since it's a celebrity, it's hard to say if that really means she she's interested in men.
-Who's Dr. Laura? '_'?

I guess... I guess that kinda shoots down "Lisa is a lesbian" theories, huh? Man, that was quick.

I guess Marshall still dates Karen. Bad for him.

Personally, considering Marshall is a passive-agressive, holier than thou lying asshat, I think they deserve each other.

And just because Lisa claims to have the hots for Tobey doesn't mean she's not a lesbian. They're in high school, and so many people in high school are so sexually confused it's not even funny. My best friend claimed to have all these male crushes, both guys in the school and fictional characters during high school, and then revealed she was a lesbian once she went to college and was somewhat out of the sight of her crazy ass family. I wasn't sure whether I was straight, gay or bi all during high school either, but have finally settled on straight, though I find women more aesthetically pleasing than men.

Now I'm just curious-- I get the holier-than-thou and the passive aggressive, but where has he lied? If/when he has, then the asshat bit will follow, IMO, I just can't remember it. He's so big on being the "better man" that lying doesn't follow to me, but I am not omniscient and it's been a while since I hit the archives.

Marshall is extremely loyal, not stupid. In his eyes, Karen hasn't done anything break-worthy yet, so he wouldn't feel right dumping her.

Erm, if he can't see how bad Karen is for him, ya, he's fairly stupid. Call it naivete if you like, but it amounts to the same thing in the end.

No, Marshal's reached a point where even a dog would turn on its master. Again.... Stupid, stupid boy.

Those glass swans? The whole 'swans mate for ever' speil? If you really want to 'mate forever' with someone, then hon, you're willing to have sex with them. Because that's what 'mate forever' entails. NOTE THE WORD 'MATE'. So no, he was just leading Karen on, trying to look like the sweet, romantic perfect boyfriend. Bullshit. He deserves it.

Y'know, the word "mate" has more meanings than just "copulation." Really, it does.

You claiming that he was lying because he wasn't ready for sex as soon as she was is as equally preposterous as suggesting he was lying because he didn't propose to her right then and there--after all, marriage is a commitment of a lifetime of love, so why beat around the bush?

But, the swan symbolism has nothing to do with sex or marriage or anything other than an earnest desire to have a a serious relationship with Karen that will last forever. But that desire for such a serious relationship doesn't necessarily mean that Marshall is ready or capable of plunging into all aspects of such a relationship at once--relationships grow and evolve over time. Like coffee, relationships need to percolate.

On a side note, it has been observed since the late 70s, when people took animal socology a tad more serious, that swans mate like humans break-ups and reunions and all that. Swans mate forever doesn't really go fopr swans, you see. It's, as with humans, a trend, nothing more.

Aren't some penguins supposed to mate for life, too? Why didn't he give her a crystal penguin? And a copy of 'The Pebble and the Penguin?' But Marshall is unoriginal, and therefore to be despised!

Yes, I know 'mate' doesn't only mean sex, but animals, like swans, tend to copulate with their mates. So do humans. Married people have sex, even the Christians who think sex is evil admit this.

A serious relationship that will last forever? Sounds like marriage. Or something that would involves sex and maybe family in some way, or else he would have been better off giving her one of those Best Friends Forever necklaces or something. :P

As it is, it's an empty promise, because dude, you can't marry someone you don't want to have sex with. Or you can, but that's just unfair to the other person, because sex is a perfectly human desire and need, for most people.

MRodriguez... the last time I heard someone use "mate forever" in a way that implied being ready for sex it was a user, which Marshall is obviously not.

I don't know what kind of relationships YOU've had, but plenty people I know wanted to be together with their boy/girl, but were NOT having sex because they weren't ready for it yet. And guess what? They weren't lying about staying together forever, either. Marshall and Karen are both young nad only been together a few months; at least ONE of them is wise enough to know to avoid getting caught up in the excitement of falling in love and end up doing something they both might regret.

But that's neither here nor there considering the context in which the word and phrase were used. Marshall isn't talking about biology, he's talking romance and relationships.

Neither does it necessitate being immediately ready for ALL aspects of a relationship. That's just silly.

Married people have sex, even the Christians who think sex is evil admit this.

Meh. Let's be fair, here.... If dating has taught me anything, it's that Christians don't exactly have a monopoly on having creepy, bizarre, sexual hangups. Nor are all Christians psychos that think that sex is evil. Some of them actually think that sex is good and healthy.

A serious relationship that will last forever? Sounds like marriage. Or something that would involves sex and maybe family in some way,

Yes, it does. That does NOT equate to Marshall being immediately ready for sex, marriage, or any of the other major things likely to come along with a "serious relationship that will last forever." The swans thing was his way of saying that that is exactly what he wants to work towards, however.

or else he would have been better off giving her one of those Best Friends Forever necklaces or something. :P

Sure, if he had no romantic inclination.

As it is, it's an empty promise, because dude, you can't marry someone you don't want to have sex with. Or you can, but that's just unfair to the other person, because sex is a perfectly human desire and need, for most people.

But at what point does Marshall ever state or hint at that he doesn't want to have sex with Karen. Not once. He has strongly suggested, however, that he isn't ready for sex yet.

You seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that when Marshall says that they're too young, or that he's not ready for that step yet that he's saying, "I don't wanna have sex evaaaarrr!!!!!" But that's just not the case.

iRobot, seconded. Also, Marshall has said he's just a kid, and boy do his actions reflect that. His swans and talk of lifelong commitment are the product of being young, fresh out of the box, and idealistic. He's being romantic but, as a kid, doesn't have a handle on what that means in real life. He's probably thinking of the kind of "knight on a white horse" stuff you see in books. Lots of emotion, lots of commitment, lots of affection, but not a lot of smut. Will he be ready someday? Likely so, yes. Will he do it suddenly and in a way Karen approves of? Probably not. Growing up takes time.
