It actually is kind of hard to think of any, now that you mention it.

I think that most people are really thinking of Los Angeles county when they say LA, and don't even realise that there's a difference between LA county and LA city. I live a few miles sould of LA city in El Segundo. When family come to visit, they're usually quite happy to go to the Walk of Fame, take a few pictures of the Hollywood sign, and call that a tour. I certainly feel no need to take them on a tour of the actual LA city.

For some of the people I talk to, they even understand that Venice Beach is a specific place, but still think of it as "in" LA. One English friend of mine lived here a few years and still thought that all the cities in LA county were just districts within LA city.

You LA folks just don't get it: Not only does "LA" include all of LA County -- it includes Orange County too.

Now that's just crazy talk -- we'll have split into North California and South California by then.

Besides, the proper definition of LA-hood is not so much geographical as linguistic -- I used to define "LA" as "all of California south of the Grapevine", but several years ago I changed that to "any place where people say 'the' before their freeway numbers".

(The "the" issue almost caused a civil war in my family, when I caught my sister doing it after only a couple years at college (UCI). We eventually reached an armistice by establishing I-5 as a sort of demilitarized zone between NorCal and SoCal: when she's driving up to visit us, she takes "the 405, to the 5, to 580, to 13"; then to return, she takes "13, to 580, to 5, to the 405".)

(I find I can still irritate her by referring to Irvine as "LA". )

I live in "The Communications Capital of the World" (or so the City of San Diego calls itself), we have more space between us and LA than we do between us and TJ, and we call the freeways/highways by "the". "The 805", "The 5", "The 8", etc. It's not an L.A. thing, maybe a Socal thing.

And we'll fight of LAinization tooth and nail...
