Just as a word of my personal oppinion... I found the war of the worlds to be rubbish, not because of feeling empathy for the extras, but merely because it was... well... rubbish! I mean, the special effects were great, but that was about the only good part. I mean, what a letdown at the end! All that suspense for nothing! Shortly after watching the film I read the book, and the two were nothing alike! For a start the main character had vastly been changed, to the extent of inventing two children out of thin air, making him break up with his wife, changing his nationality and reducing his I.Q. by about fifty... and the ending was done much better in the book, whilst the effect still being the same (the martians were beaten off by microscopic bacteria), it was still a good ending because it was all explained as to how this was possible, and the suspense was still there in that this could have been a pre-emptive strike by the martians or something.
However I think your idea of giving objective and subjective ratings is overall a good idea. Look forward to seeing some reviews!
