Does it have anything to do with "Pupkin"?

I could be wrong, but I intepreted that strip as the very mention of the name "Orange Guy" causing the hackles on BoxJam's back to rise. Why the Wait Here Sign was no longer yellow is another issue entirely.

it's a metaphor for the general orangelessness of the universe. it was that that caused boxjam to let down his guard enough to allow mrs. b. her sneak-attack.

so now we must ask: does this mean the orange has gone out of the universe completely, to survive only as a boogieman, used to scare wilfull children and innocent waiters? or is this only a phase, a brief breathing period which will compel us to reconsider the place of orange in the universe so that we will welcome it back, as an exercise in character-building, whereby we embrace the bad in payment for the good?

...or it could just mean boxjam is out of orange ink.
