I still think that this is a good side of Phoebe. Think about it this way: she might not be hugs, chocolate, and kaos for everyone, but she is behaving like she did when we first knew her, before she hit her depressed slump. She's snapped her funk. Be happy for her.
Here's another way to look at it: the over-analysis route.
It all comes down to the last panel. She's teaming up with Ceilidh against Joe. She's not afraid of him not liking her. And then there's her line:
"You can have first punch any day."
I think she's accepted that Joe and Ceilidh have a special relationship. ; )
I will admit, though -- I still don't know why she chose a highland dancing costume...

Three for all.
That is, Ceilidh and Feebs have returned to a state of "best Friends" (they won't let anybody but each other criticize them.) While Joe, as usual, failed to recognize (yet again) where his limitations exist.
They'll both knock him down now.

"Banff!"
"Take a note, Mish Moneypenny..."
It seems like Joe has more reason to fear Hallowe'en than the rest of us.
*contented sigh* It's so nice to see Phoebe showing emotion once again... and, as much as he shouldn't have said it, Joe was right. They *are* both unoriginal. : )

I don't think its a rivalry thing. I think Phoebe is just lonely. Everyone around her seems to have someone. And I think the straw that broke the camel's back was when she saw Ryan with her Deirdre. She realized she's gone all these years in high school without having anyone to feel close to, and feels like she's missing out.
So she's reinventing herself hoping to find someone. She's probably not even sure what she wants, but the fact that she's trying to become a new Phoebe is obvious. She got rid of the glasses (duh) and now she's going for a more feminine costume. (Probably figures it worked for Ceilidh).
Poor Phoebe. She's always been my favorite of the Avalon girls, and I think she was super-cute even with the glasses

Me, I think Ceilidh is a little jealous of Phoebe because she fills the outfit better than Ceilidh did. And she did wear it last year. Maybe Ceilidh's also wondering if it's a way to get Joe?
For Phobe, well, maybe she liked how Ceilidh looked last year and wanted to try the outfit? Or maybe she went to get a costume too late and couldn't find anything better?
By the way, has Phoebe changed her hairstyle a bit?
And why don't we see more potato chips in Avalon?
Wapiko-chan
------------------

I think that this is a little bit of fall-out from the yearbook conclusion.
Pheobe finally finds out that joe cared after all for all that time, then reconsiders her position.
Just as Ceilidh went ever so slightly Hel

So what you're saying is that Joe can't look at himself in the mirror any more, is it? Or maybe you think Alan's suffering the kind of identity crisis that leaves him unable to decide which of two morons he is?
Or perhaps you are suggesting that Phoebe is interested in a little fling or her own (and with Ceilidh at that).

I think that Ceilidh is dressed as Phoebe when they met, and Phoebe is dressed as Ceilidh when she met Deidre. I don't know why they've dressed as each other, but I think they must have arranged to do so, probably to freak out Joe.

Egads.
Is Phoebe trying to tell us something?
Maybe she thinks that Ceilidh has a recipe for success, and may therefore try to emulate it. Without a hint of subtlety.
Or maybe Feebs is displaying a strange way of hero worship.
Or maybe this was all a grand ploy between both of them, to give Joe a double punch.
No matter what it is, it's a great strip. Thanks Josh.

I'm afraid. Afraid, because the first thing that came to my mind when I read the strip was that it was some kind of backstabbing ploy of Phoebe's to get Joe's attention.
Of course, by reading that thread, I read other explanations, but I still fear I'm right. I don't want to be. And of course, it isn't pleasant to see Evil everywhere.
Albatross-Minh

Well, Phoebe just managed to start reaffirming her friendship with Ceilidh. I doubt that she decided on her costume as any sort of one-upsmanship method. She probably just couldn't think of a better costume in time and had to resort to the stand-by that more than one girl at the high school has probably resorted to in the past.
As for Joe getting smited, well, that's just inevitable, isn't it? Considering the fact that he and his mother seem to have several things in common, I'm starting to wonder what Hilde acted like when she was in high school. Maybe being smited on Halloween runs in the family?
