Porn in webcomics!

Postby Noxy on Tue Feb 10, 2004 8:32 am

I've been wondering lately why all webcomics I read (except for perhaps angels2200) have a strange fascination with porn movies and use it as a recurring theme.
- Queen of Wands: Check the t-shirt. And the numerous strips of Kestrel checking out hardcore videos to watch them at new years eve, because she wants to understand the story.
-Something Positive: Aubrey's constant wild schemes about making money with some waaaaay-off porn idea (Indians, Cthulhu). Her and Peejees admission that they are well aware of the various movies.
- Scandal Sheet: Main character used to work in a hardcore movie factory. Even once as an actor.
- College roomies from hell: Main male characters participated (even if unknowingly) in a hardcore flick. Later on, April nearly joined for a schoolgirl-tentacle-picture with Mike.

Do I see a pattern there? I mean, it's not like any of the characters uses those movies for the "normal" purpose -- getting off (or so it seems), but still take an interest in it.
Is there some special aestetic value in mass produced XXX-videos that only comic artists can appreciate? Or is the topic so funny by itself?

Answers anybody?
Oh yeah, and I read the FAQ. Didn't help me any.

Porn is funny, simply put. The idea of people having to open a magazine or pop in a DVD to get off because they can't do it on their own makes me laugh.
Something Positive - we're only slightly cranky

Well, Aerie isn't going to show Kestrel using a porn video for its "normal" purpose...not unless we all chip in to get a special strip made -Ahem!

However, even if they can't show characters using porn for its normal purpose, this is the internet. Having the characters show an interest in porn makes 90 % or more of the readers identify with the cast.

Webcomics=Internet. Internet=porn. It's an easy connection to make.

Of course, it may also just have something to say about you, taking into account the comics you read...

Not recalling the guy's name, but was a director of many many cheap horror flicks. He was asked why he put so much cheesy humor and sex into his films. He replied that horror, humor, and sex all have the common tie that they build tension, and then have a sudden release.
Figure that's as good an explination for it as any.

Possibly because porn just lends itself to jokes so well...

Yah....like what?

Hmmm...lessee, most of them contain "adult" language (S*P more, CRFH less), but I have yet to see any picture with as much indecency as you can get during prime time American TV while watching the Superbowl.

Or prime Time American TV, period? Yeah that's what I thought.

The reason it is used? Because it is funny. That's why.

Porn

Postby AmanuJaku on Wed Feb 11, 2004 1:32 pm

Porn? On the Internet? What? When did this happen? :D

Heh. I'm suprised you didn't mention Sexy Losers (a link on both my web page and on the Queen of Wand's Main page) when you mentioned Porn in webcomics.

Sex in webcomics isn't new, nor will it probably stop anytime in the near future. Simply put, sex sells, as Joshua Lesnick of Wendy/Cute Wendy/Girly knows. He started up Slipshine to help pay for his bills, and will get back to Wendy someday. I frankly don't see anything wrong with it, because I can always avoid the sites with that sort of content, if I choose to. That's the benefit of the internet.

Never read that one. And I'm probably wasting too much of my employer's time reading webcomics as it is right now to start digging into yet another one. But at least *I'm* having a good time. Heh!

Sex in webcomics isn't new, nor will it probably stop anytime in the near future.

What I mentioned isn't about sex, though. The comics themselves are mostly harmless. It's not even about using porn for the purpose it's supposed to have -- getting horny. Porn in the examples I mentioned simply seems to be used as a joke.

Not a bad one, mind you, it's just that it's something just about every other comic uses. They don't talk much about animal documentaries (even tho Aerie talks about monkey alla time), about Ally McBeal, Buffy, Dismissed, any sport events or whatever...but they do talk about porn. Just thought it's interesting.

Eh...Porn has a wider variety audience mebbe? All the spam people get almost guarantees (never can spell that word properly) that everyone reading said comics is aware of it firsthand, compared to the others which may only be heard through hearsay and watercooler chats.

Simple. Because pr0n is an endless source of amusement derived from the embarassment of someone else.

Heh. Nice to see I am not the only one reading webcomics at work.

I should have elaborated in my previous post. Sex sells, and it only makes sense that those jobs that center around sex, would be fodder for various jokes. So it's not all that suprising to see various porn related jokes.

I'm not all that suprised that Aerie has porn jokes in the comic, after all, people do have discussions about porn. I imagine that many people who end up viewing the site, like porn, so it is a topical interest. A lot of her jokes are amusing observations about various topics, and frankly, porn can make for some very funny subject matter.

I also forgot to mention another example: Diesel Sweeties has several main characters who used to be a porn stars.

Not to mention that sex in and of itself is a rather awkward act. Both socially and physically. It lends itself to jokes very well.

Especially tentacle hentai. It's like, wow. Where the Hell did you get this and who the Hell is watching it?

I have a little theory that everyone inherently has zero sexual self-confidence, and it's only years of confidence building that allow anyone to screw without nervous giggling. And that confidence building thing is pure conjecture on my part.
But I dare say that even when two people get beyond their jitters it's -still- frickin' hilarious. I've said it before, but the funniest thing about porn is that everyone is so serious in it. I would -hope- that's not normal. I mean, 'you wouldn't believe some of the faces you people make mid-coitus,' as the Brittish angel pointed out in Dogma.

Sex has always been seen in society as a Taboo act. People didn't talk about it in public, but it was always on people's minds. As society becomes more socially acceptable about talking about sex, less and less people will have a problem about talking about it. Perhaps then it won't quite have the impact it did as a joke.

Tentacles comes from the old man back in the corne behind you... (GEEZ what was that question)

I mean, its the biggest phallic thing you can get in diameter and lenth while the handler of it is big enough to handle it. And I also don't talk about the dexterity the fuckers has... While you can pour some jelly thingy on, it is about what the old freak can come with and thinks about what he can be doing to them. And the master... bater is the most gross thing you could imagine behind his computer with couple of kleenex and hand moisturizing cream.

(I can't beleive I actualy wrote any of the above, well, have a good lunch while reading this...)

I once heard someone say "Yay! We're off on an adventure to kill the dragon....but before we do, let's stop and have wild sex!" in response to hentai. It was hilarious. :P
Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear;
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear.
