Avalon Code v2.0

Postby JHU Battousai on Tue Dec 02, 2003 11:48 pm

God, what a pain it is to convert HTML tables into bbCode.

This is a slightly modified version of the last posted Avalon Code (Then v1.01). I cut the Personal Information section, since it really served no purpose, and was a direct ripoff of the Geek Code's version of it. I kept the W code, though, since it's been long enough that it's somewhat funny again.

For discussion and revision, and then inclusion in the Lynch Vault when it returns (for the third time).

Avalon Code
Version 1.01a

Readership

R: How often do you read Avalon?
R--- I've read it once. Maybe more, but I wasn't of sound mind enough to remember.
R-- I make a habit not to read it, but I'm not opposed to seeing a strip by accident.
R- I read it whenever I can remember.
R I make a point to read it often enough to keep up.
R+ I read it daily (and always catch up the few times I miss a day)
R++ I read it *at least* once per day, and have been known to hit "reload" like a madman around midnight to get the latest strip. If Avalon isn't already my start page, I've at least considered it.
R+++ I check out the same strip several times daily to see if any minor detail has been changed (and I save every copy locally in the event they might become collectors' items).
!R I hate Avalon and refuse to read it. Yes, I am aware of the irony of my Avalon Code.

S: Since when have you been reading Avalon?

S--- I just started reading it. It confuses me thoroughly, and it seems that I don't get many of the jokes.
S-- I've been reading it since not long ago. Who the heck is Larry?
S- I've been reading it for at least several months; enough that I feel like I'll continue reading it, if only to learn whether Alison has some dark hidden past.
S I'm considered a veteran Avalon fan.
S+ I remember when the characters all looked the same, and the males were hard to tell from the females.
S++ I started reading shortly after it joined Keenspot.
S+++ I was reading it on ceilidh.dhs.org.
S++++ I was there on Nov. 8th, 1999.

Reader Participation

F: How involved are you in the Avalon Forum?

F--- The forum makes no sense. I don't have any urge to read it for any reason.
F-- I've read it only when there's a link to something interesting in some thread. I might have read the entire thread.
F- I read it by my own free will; you could say I lurk the forum.
F I've registered myself for the forum, maybe even posted a few times.
F+ People there know me innately. I've started a few threads. I might have even used some custom smileys.
F++ I poke newbies regularly. If I don't post within a week, people seem to cheer loudly when I return.
F+++ If I don't post something several times per day, I feel queasy and lightheaded.
!F I refuse to even visit the forum.

IRC: How involved am I with the #avalon IRC channel?

IRC--- Never tried it, don't wanna. I don't care to work out any technical hurdles to accessing #avalon.
IRC-- I might check it out if I have free time, or if I can ever figure out how to get on IRC.
IRC- I want to someday. I've tried getting to the channel, but my firewall won't let me.
IRC Been there. Done that. I don't think it's ready for t-shirts yet.
IRC+ It was fun enough to visit more than once.
IRC++ You can see me there regularly. Sometimes I stay online when I'm not around just to log everything.
IRC+++ My participation in #avalon has become habitual. It is responsible for several overdue assignments and has led to severe sleep depression. I've vowed to cut back, knowing full well that I won't.
IRC++++ I got disconnected once. People took screenshots of the /who listing without me in it.
!IRC BeSeen forever!!!

Additional qualifier:
O I have ops on #avalon. (Combine with as many plusses/minuses necessary)

FA: Fan Art
FA--- No time. Can't do it. Don't even feel like it, even.
FA-- I feel uneasy drawing Avalon fan art. I can't draw the characters properly, or it'll look lame beside all the other art.
FA- I've doodled stuff for fun. Even if I were to submit it, I can't for a lack of scanner.
FA I've submitted at least one piece of fan art.
FA+ I've submitted several. I may have chopped up original Avalon strips to create my own.
FA++ People seem to keep wanting to see my fan art. If I didn't post anything in the 200th Strip Gala, damn but I wanted to.
FA+++ People have been comissioning me because of my Avalon fan art. Some readers think I'd be an acceptable replacement artist if Josh were to up and die some day. (NegZero is a FA+++. ;-) )
!FA Fan art is purile and untrue to the original. Quit suckin' up.
%FA I'm Josh Phillips.

GA: Guest Artist Sundays
GA--- You'll never catch me trying to draw an Avalon strip.
GA-- All I got here is MS Paint. I shouldn't even bother.
GA- I tried. Oh how I did try. But it never happened. If I had a scanner and enough liquid courage, I'd do it in a second.
GA I've done a Guest Artist Sunday before.
GA+ I've done several Guest Artist Sundays. I've posted some in the forum 'cause there's a backlog of guest artists.
GA++ I am notorious among Sunday readers. Some think I should create an Avalon spin-off series.
GA+++ I've done Guest *weeks*.
!GA The whole Guest Artist Sunday concept is flawed. First-time readers will be scared away by these hapless knock-offs.
%GA I'm Josh Phillips. Sunday's my day off.

FF: Fanfiction Writing

FF--- Letters form words? Words form sentences? AAAAAAHH!!!
FF-- Dude! Where's my typewriter?
FF- I don't like writing, really....
FF fiction efforts are strictly role play, but I've been considering or have started a story.
FF+ I'm no Nick Pavlovski, but I did a story or two!
FF++ I write plenty of fiction, some of which qualifies me as an Incredibly Sadistic Bastard.
FF+++ I'm within striking distance of my own fan-based novel! (Nick Pavlovski is a FF+++)
FF? Make up a story? Don't other people do that already? Why should I bother?
!FF What? You don't believe that Avalon is all the story we need? Heretic!
*FF I got written into a fanfic by somebody else.
%FF I don't need to write fanfics. I write the comic. (Only Josh gets to be a %FF)

SN: Spectacular Notion!

SN--- I've read some of it. Damn, it sucks. The writing's shoddy and the plot is stupid.
SN-- I've only seen some. It's just too damn weird. It just makes me uncomfortable.
SN- I tried reading it once or twice; it's just completely uninteresting.
SN I've read bits and pieces of the thread once or twice. It's cool, but too long...
SN+ I've read the thread through once. I like it a lot. I may have written a short segment once.
SN++ I've written one or two longer contributions to it.
SN+++ I've devoted many hours to writing long posts, I check the story and the tech thread multiple times daily just to keep up.
SN? Huh? What's Spectacular Notion?
!SN My God, you people are sick and twisted and have no lives. What the hell are you thinking?

LY: Lyncher Status

LY--- I don't read Avalon.
LY-- I don't care how the story goes.
LY- It's nice when the storyline goes like I'd like it to.
LY I would rather Josh do as I say.
LY+ I have threatened injury to Josh at least once.
LY++ I have threatened Josh's life at least once.
LY+++ I have had a horse head placed in Josh's bed.
LY? Threaten? Josh? Never!
!LY It's a comic strip! Get over it! Freaks.

Characters

f{x x C} or f{x C}: Favorites
Please limit this section to two characters, seperated by a space. Too many will make alphabet soup out of your code.

Pick two of the characters from this chart and rank them using the code just below the chart.
C=Ceilidh J=Joe HP=Mrs. Page K=Cecil
A=Alan L=Alison MRB=Mr. Bradley Z=Somebody Else
P=Phoebe I=Iain MSB=Mrs. Bradley
R=Ryan N=Nancy NO=Noelle
H=Helene D=Deirdre T=Todd

x I like this character just a bit more than the others.
x+ I like this character and enjoy a discussion about them.
x++ I really like this character. I want to see more of them in the comic, and ask Josh to draw more of them.
x+++ This character is the only reason I read Avalon. I worship the ground they walk on. I've drawn (or wanted to draw) a 200th Strip Gala picture of this character, and am plotting a fanfic featuring them.

As the prefix to the qualifier, add:
x< I find this character less interesting than I did, let's say, a few months ago.
x My opinion about this character has been stable for a long time, and I doubt it'll change in the nearest future.
x> If I feel my obsession with this character is increasing.. -.^

Also, you can indicate your favorite comic here (just your FAVORITE, not your top however many), using Josh's now-very-useful numbering scheme.

Example: Someone who's a <code>f{C>++ NO 1:200}</code> loves Ceilidh (and is getting more obsessed) and likes Noelle, and their favorite strip is the infamous #200.

D{x x C} or D{x C}: Dislikes

This section is constructed exactly the same as the Favorites section, just with different qualifiers and prefixes.

x--- I really, really, really hate this character. Really. I do. If this character got murdered one day, I'd be the first person police would ask about their alibi.
x-- I hate this character. I start bashing threads and am considering starting an anti-whoever website.
x- Uhh.. this character really gets on my nerves. I have no idea how somebody can like them, since it's so easy to see how big a jerk this character is. I show my dislike by joining threads in which people bash this character and occasional snide remarks.
x There is something in this character I don't like. Looks, personality, whatever. I just don't like it.

The prefix added to the qualifier means:

x< My hostility towards this character lessens.
x I don't like this character and I like it the way it is now.
x> This particular character peeves me more and more everyday.

r: Resemblance

For this section, pick the character that you are *most* like, physically or personality-wise (or both, if you're [un]lucky), and rate how close the character and you are.

rx I bear a slight resemblance to this character.
rx+ I think I look like this character.
rx++ Others think I look like this character.
rx+++ Has Josh been spying on me?
rx++++ Josh has admitted that this character is officially based on me!

PSL: The harbouring of Perverse Sexual Lust
PSL--- No PSL here. None. Honest.
PSL-- If I do harbour PSL, it ain't for any characters in Avalon.
PSL- Me? No, I don't harbour PSL. Why would you think that? What, does it show? No, I swear, I DON'T! AAAGH!!!
PSL Fine, I admit it, there are some characters that just demand PSL to be harboured for them. It's not *my* fault.
PSL+ Damn straight I harbour PSL. Who doesn't?
PSL++ I make it a point to inform everyone when my PSL harbouring has reached a new level. This is usually accompanied by lewd sound effects in the forum.
PSL+++ What, this? Just a device I created to clone a comic character into a real life, living entity...
!PSL For pete's sake, these are comic characters, people! If you're going to harbour PSL at all, keep it in real life, thank you.
PSL--- I am a eunuch.
?PSL Mommy, what does "sex" mean?
PSL* I love you, man.

PSL{x++ y-} Specify PSL levels for individual characters, after you've specified a general level, to denote exceptions to the rule (see the chart above for character codes)

P: Pairings

*Note*: This section requires some explanation. From the chart below, pick two (only two, please, to avoid alphabet soup) characters, and rank their relationship. Do this for as many or as few pairs as you like. If you have more than one, enclose them in {}'s after the 'P', separtated by a space.

C=Ceilidh J=Joe *=Anyone
A=Alan L=Alison !=Noone
P=Phoebe I=Iain
R=Ryan N=Nancy
H=Helene D=Deirdre

XY-- No! This shouldn't happen! If Josh does this, he's more twisted than we ever thought.
XY- They're a bad match for each other, but if they do end up together, I won't be too upset.
XY I don't really approve or disapprove of this pairing.
XY+ I'd like to see them together, but I won't mind if they don't.
XY++ They really should get together, and I'll be very disappointed if they don't.
XY+++ They MUST get together before the end of the comic! I will hunt Josh down and make him draw it if I have to!
XY? They have a relationship?
!XY NO! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, NO!!!!

Example: A person with <code>P{CJ+++ DR+ I*-- L!-}</code> really wants to see Joe and Ceilidh together, would like to see Ryan and Deirdre together, hates a pairing of Iain and anyone, and doesn't want Alison to end up alone.

W: What happen?

W--- Take off every 'zig'!
W-- You are the way to destruction
W- What you say!
W Move 'zig'! For great justice!
W+ You have no chance to survive make your time.
W++ Somebody set us up the bomb.
W+++ All your base are belong to us.
!W Nooooooo! My precious joke! They're hurting you!

Thanks for taking it upon you anyway.

Makes me sad to see the names of this may old-timers who have moved on used for reference, but I guess that's life. (Forum diving these days is even more of a frustration than it was a year ago; most of the art links are not active anymore; the 'net is a fleeting experience, that's hard on a guy with a historians approach to the world.)

Minor nitpick: It's "Somebody set up us the bomb." (I know it's normally quoted the other way around, but that's really how the original goes.)

OK, now I have to type up my code again. I used to have it in my sig, but that's gone the way of the Dodo.

Made me realize: JHU, we need a character code for James Page. I used JP. I could have gone for Z, but I guess he needs one these days.

[edit: changed to the new one-character character codes. (Is that "one character2 codes"?)

Yep. JP is a good code for him. Edited above to add him.

And I've always called it just "Avalon Code" not "Avalon Geek Code."

[Edit]Or I thought I could edit it... I guess such a huge post doesn't edit well. I've set up a crappy Geocities account to hold the code while we edit it.

Maybe I f$cked this up. I edited in a missing line break shortly after; those two changes might have competed with each other.

dunno, I didn't mind the parentheses; the longer codes are easier readable, but you are the master of The Code.
I'd propose that you exchange codes for H. and J. Page, though, as Hildegarde is widely known as Gar. (Even though RJ Shep doesn't like this nickname.)
