Awright, everybody, TIME OUT! (*pumps shotgun*)
Okay, just when did this change from a fan forum to a "let's-burn-Ceileigh-at-the-stake" club? Huh? Anyone?
Hmph. Didn't think so. Okay. So I know Josh has pushed some buttons here, but just what prompted you lot to immediately paint up a rather nice young lady as some evil, seductive wench out to capture the role of 'Babylon the Fallen' in the Book of Revelations? Let me point a few things out that you people have been ignoring.
Look at Ceileigh sitting on the bed there. Yes, she's all but naked, but you people are overlooking some details. Look at her posture. Look at her eyes. (YOU! YES, YOU! THE EYES IN HER _FACE_, OR I CUT YOU OFF AT THE KNEES WITH A RUSTY SPOON!) Is this a seductress? Is this someone who's even making a move in that direction? Come on, folks, NO-ONE is that ignorant of trampy behavior, not with soap operas around, anyway.
This kid has been under enormous stress, got caught in a rainstorm, and WITHOUT EVEN THINKING began to change clothes with a boy in the room. Might it make a difference that THIS IS THE BOY SHE TRUSTS ENOUGH TO OFFER HER HEART TO? I think it's rather nice she has someone she can trust that much... and he confirmed her judgement there in the last panel, too. Something he's been blasted as wimp for, by the way. And now you people (when you aren't condemning them) are predicting doom'n'gloom for their prospects.
Here's a way it could just as easily go. Joe has shut her up. He MIGHT just be about to open up to her, tell her what he's feeling, and, if he's lucky, wind up with not just a girlfriend but a friend who will watch his back and do anything for him because he's already done as much for her.
Whew.
Come on, folks, give 'em a chance. The way you've savaged what may be his nicest creation, I couldn't blame Josh if he shut the whole thing down and never published another episode of 'Avalon'. (Please don't do that, Josh. SOME of us out here still believe in you, and in Ceileigh.)
Oof. That's a heavy load. But I think it needed said.

Er, well... I think I'd like to point out that Ceilidh has as many advocates as people who want to "burn her at the stake". That's the way it is with most individuals... they have their supporters and their, um... not... supporters...
I think it's a credit to Josh that he is able to provoke such real responses to his characters.
The worst post I read against Ceilidh (and I admit, I have neither the time nor patience to wade through all the posts this latest storyline has started) was basically "She's being selfish and manipulating Josh, but I don't think she means what she's doing."
I'm not sure where you got the idea that a ton of people are against Ceilidh... many, the vast majority I'd wager, sympathize with her. If she were a real person, then I'd say she's only human - because that's what Josh has made her. She has her vices alongside her virtues and some may be harsher judges of her than others... but I think I speak for most Avalon fans when I say we don't begrudge her for her inadvertent manipulations and sympathize with her vulnerability.
-The Mike

Well, Mike, I do agree with you that Ceileigh has some support out there, but you'd never know it just from looking at the posts. Besides the thread I kicked off here, I've read ONE post (from LtPowers) that offered anything more positive about Ceileigh than "she's being a manipulative little _____." Dammit, I like that kid - she reminds me of several of my friends and relatives, and I could not in honor allow such a once-sided mobbing to continue unanswered. That's what triggered the rant.
To any who were offended by my manner, I offer my apologies for my tone - NOT for my message, which I stand behind completely, but for the way I presented it. But please, folks, try to consider that nakedness does not always equal sex - I do get a strong feeling that she just wasn't thinking straight (or even at all) when she started changing. Trust does not make a lady into a tramp. And she obviously does trust Joe - with good reason, it appears.
And I hope my scenario does play out - it looks like a possibility. They each deserve someone to watch their back - it'd be nice if it turned out they could be there for each other.

I would offer a welcoming poke, but Avalonians with shotguns scare me...oh wait, I almost forgot I'm an Avalonian with a shotgun, so nevermind. *poke*
You make a really good point about needing to stand behind Ceilidh and trusting Josh to do what's right for the story. (I mean, he is the author after all.) More than likely most of the more negative comments about Ceilidh have come from the sheer shock of the readership, who may be unable to cope with the latest twistiness that is Avalon. Give everyone some time and I believe they'll come around to our way of thinking.
------------------

Well, I'm starting to see more positive responses - not just here, all over the forum. I guess those who trust Ceilidh (see, I can learn to spell!) just needed a bit more time to put their arguments together. I agree in a way - it does seem a little awkward defending something people regard as wrong. Of course, I don't have a problem doing so - I'll back my kneejerk reactions all the way!
Anyway, to reiterate: I back what I said all the way. I'm just glad to see I'm not going to have to fend off the raving mobs on my own...

All right, I'm happy to be proven wrong (in this case, anyway). I'll leave this thread open for further posts, but it may as well be a closed topic as far as I'm concerned. And thanks for restoring my faith, people!

I never called her manipulative. Quite the reverse: I said that she was obliviously self-centered and not taking Joe's reactions into account at all, and for that reason deserves what's coming. Does that put me in the witch-burning faction or not?
(I'm willing to back off on this stance somewhat now that what's coming has started. Ye gods, I'm a soft touch.)

Villager: We have found a witch, may we burn her?
Crowd: BURN!! BUUUURN HER!
Bedevere: But how do you *know* she is a witch?
Villager: She looks like one!
Other Villagers: Yeah! She looks like one!!!
Bedevere: Bring her forward.

The night is black
Without a moon
The air is thick, and still
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torchlit hill
Features distorted in the flickering light
Faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night
The mob moves like demons possessed

I think the actual "she's deliberately manipulative" faction is quite small.
Rather, there's a good number of us who suspect that she is not fully aware of her own motives. In other words, it's not, "I'm going to trap Joe with my sexual wiles, BWAHAHAHAH!!!" Rather, it's, "This is what it takes to have a boyfriend, right? I don't want to lose him...."
In other words, she's not evil, she's confused and frightened and fallible, and thank god (and Josh) that Joe had the necessary willpower and clarity to stop things from going horribly awry.
