first of all, as a long-suffering hawks fan: de-troit sucks! yeah, i picked them in the pool, but i'll gladly lose the point to see them out...
second of all, picks/comments for round 2:
EAST
NJ vs. TOR - NJ in 6...hey, i'd love to pick toronto again, but against jersey, i think i'd have to be delusional, although if cujo stays ridiculously hot, this one could be Good.
BUF vs. PIT - BUF in 6...now that the southeast division has been disposed of, on to real opponents...i like buffalo's style, i think that their gritty style (oh yeah, and some guy named hasek) will give them the edge, although the above comment about cujo also holds true for hedburg
WEST
COL vs. LA - COL in 5...it does feel wrong pulling against LA after they did such a nice job of disposing of the red wings, but colorado is on a completely different level (any dead things fans out there, you're just in denial)...the blake vs. former team should make for an interesting subplot, but i can't see LA keeping up this almost miraculous run
DAL vs. STL - DAL in 6...after the amusing first round that both teams had, i'd look for a letdown on both sides, but i like the playoff-tested stars here, not least because eddie's better and all that (oh yeah, and i picked them to go all the way, so i better stick with that)
finally, one last note: a lot has been made of the booing during the anthems in some series, particularly dallas-edmonton, so i'll sound off: This is Bad. in chicago, we've been screaming during our anthem since the mid 80's to inspire our team after taking it hard in the first two games against that godlike edmonton team, but we Do Not boo during O Canada, so i'd urge people to show a little class, there are better times to boo than during an anthem (like when the team comes out, duh), etc.

People have been booing during anthems?!? Which anthems? Where?
If that's not considered treason and punishible by death, it should be considered just to snap some sense into these people.
JOSH.

Bolcseseg, you should have more faith in our Leafs.
Tor and NJ split their three games this year, right down the middle (1-1-1), and New Jersey is not as intimidating as you seem to think they are.
Toronto does NOT have the same team as they did last year, and they have little to no injured key players like last year, to boot.
Toronto will likely play the same game against NJ that they did with Ottawa -- less focus on the rush, more focus on shutting down the opponent in the neutral zone.
We have forwards that are tough and that can backcheck now (Roberts, Corson), we have a much stronger defensive core, especially with Berg in there, not to mention McCabe, and Cujo is on right now.
Add to that the fact that Sundin is producing this playoff season, and we have a winning team that will knock out NJ in 6, maybe less, but likely 6.
I'm already looking forward to my Avalon playoff points for this particular series; it's a shame that you won't be getting yours, Bolcseseg...
------------------

well, to put together some sort of intelligible reply (history research paper...mind not functioning):
1) toronto's first series proved rather well that regular season standings don't mean too much in the playoffs
2) toronto put up 10 goals against an ottawa team that had a suspect goalie (if i get lynched by bitter sens fans, i blame you!), which definitely isn't bad for the playoffs, they did sweep after all, but i consider the sweep mainly to have been caused by cujo, if he hadn't absolutely stolen game 1, i honestly don't think toronto would've come back from it, and he was forced to be spectacular in games 3-4 as well (random side note: all these overtime games have seriously been cutting into my sleep schedule), i don't think these goaltender duel type games are going to always go toronto's way against brodeur
3) new jersey got a semi-scare from carolina, that may well have gotten them to wake up and realize that it's playoff time (i really think this is important, detroit lost four in a row after it looked like they were going to blow over l.a. in four straight)
4) toronto did a _great_ job in shutting down ottawa's production players, but are they going to be able to keep that up against new jersey, a team that's showed for the last couple years that any one of their lines can produce?
5) is toronto going to be able to deal with the much-more-physical series that they're going to get here? sundin also had an excellent first series, but if there's a stevens nailing him constantly, he might not be able to keep the momentum going
in my final analysis, i picked the devils for the same reason i picked toronto in the first round, depth, experience, toughness, goaltending, although i don't think the difference is as pronounced as it was in the toronto/ottawa series...also, this is a series similar to det/la for me in that i really really want the team i'm not picking to win (yes, i'm one of those bastards that still hasn't forgiven the devils for when they were the most godawful boring team in the league to watch...thanks a lot jacques lemaire.)
for the record, i picked 7 of 8 matchups correctly in the first round (detroit sucks.), although i'm really bad at picked game numbers (1 of 8)...i just want to crack the damn top 10 list, validate my existence or something.

btw, i find it very very embarrassing that my roommate (who knows nothing about hockey and never watches it) is ahead of me right now (dark phoenix)...any way to bribe the moderator to kill his score?

heh.
NJ is physical, but so is TOR now. It's definitely going to be closer than the previous round (tor/ott), and I expect it to be quite the low-scoring series, with most of the action happening in the neutral zone.
Stevens will try to shut down Sundin, and Corson will try to shut down Arnott. They'll both be busy there.
But don't forget that Toronto ALSO has four lines that can score. While the fourth line usually isn't known for playmaking, they've come through more than once in the year, and the first three lines are stacked well with a good mix of finesse and toughness.
Leafs will still win in 6, but damn, this is going to be fun to watch.
.........
On another note:
I think that Lalime played pretty damn solid for someone with no real playoff experience. Though there wee a few weak goals, he made tons of stellar saves, and never really "lost it" when the bad goals went through (a la Irbe, for example -- anyone who knows Irbe will understand what I'm talking about here).
Unfortunately for the Sens, what killed them was their lack of Offensive drive. Lalime kept them in there the whole time, kept them within striking distance, but the rest of the team couldn't do anything about it.
In my opinion, Lalime was one of the best sens of the series, if not the best.
------------------

whoo-hoo! replies! intelligent hockey dialogues! you would think that wisconsin, being a relatively cold weather state, might have some hockey fans, but nnnnooooo...
yes, i definitely agree that lalime had a good series (it's really hard to win when the opposing goalie gets a 0.75 gaa for the series), the biggest problem i think ottawa had is that they didn't play physical. like, at all...ottawa's offense was pretty easily shut down because toronto was beating the crap out of them and they just stood there and took it...my worry here is that new jersey is not going to try and out-finesse toronto, they're one of the more physical teams in the league...yes, toronto had four lines that could score in the last series (cory cross? CORY CROSS???), but i think that against a physical, defensive team, they're going to have trouble.
thankfully espn carries most (all?) of the second round games (i didn't get to see game 3 or 4 in the tor-ott series), because you're certainly right, it should be a lot of fun to watch.
