Yo' Momma! [11/3/06]

Postby isobel on Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:13 am

Well then. That answers that. Seems like the pretty duo are related after all. And I'd guess that she did have Marshall pretty young, but not high-school young. I mean, Nick looks pretty good for his age, so I don't find Charisma looking like she does too out of the ordinary.

Now, though: what will Marshall do? What's Charisma's story/take on this? What will this mean for Aggie?

Augh, beat me to it by like 3 seconds!

Anyway- I think it's now time to return to the 'Marshall's mother's promiscuity turns him off sex' talk.

I really don't know what to say here- this has been speculated on so much.

Now we all must await Aggie's shocked reaction when she meets her father's girlfriend and her son. XD

ahhh so many posts to choose from!!

So is Charisma "you know who"? Her tubes tied comment makes her seem really nonchalant towards sex... i mean does she just completely disregard long-term effects other than pregnancy, from STDs to its emotional effects?

Wow, what will Aggie say to this one? So many questions! :-?

Wow, I actually guessed right!

after someone else did

And yeah -- the tubes tied comment -- ouch. Seems to have that "Not after my first mistake" tone to it. Maybe I'm reading into it too much.

So this means she DID direct Karen in there knowingly.

So, uh. Wow. Uh.

I am reminded of Joyce from "It's Walky" who reacted against her parents openness about sex by going in the oposite direction.

Marsh might be suffering from an unusually bad case of embarassed-by-parent.

Actually that's how I took, too.

Nice way to verbally smack your kid in the face eh?

And wow, I can't believe she would diret her son's girlfriend into the showers after him and then want a story about it after he got home...She's not exactly parent of the year... :nervous:

Yeah, a whole new definition for open minded parent, uh!?

At this point I'm really curious (and worried) about how it will go with Aggie's father.

Psst...Charisma, you are aware that the odds of Karen having her tubes tied is very, very low?

I hate to jump on the "I hate (insert character here)" pile, because I know I'll get grumbled at, but I really, really don't like Charisma. I don't like her as a person or a comic-book character (whereas Karen, I loathe as a person but enjoy as a well-written character, because let's face it, if they were all good guys, there'd be no PLOT, yeah?). I just don't like Charisma.

First, I think she's being too pushy with Nick. At one point (cookies to anyone who digs up a link for me) she did what sounded to me like just dismissing Nick's concerns about his daughter, saying "She'll learn to be cool with it." That sounds like she didn't want to actually address the concern, and with some connotation of "I'm not going anywhere, she better get used to it." That, to me, just screamed "evil stepmom alert!" Then the phone-sex thing. Nick expresses reservations, Charisma insists despite his concern for his daughter's sensibilities and refuses to stop... both these things remind me rather strongly of Karen. Her rather bad mothering of Marshall is reason number two I dislike her as a person.

As a character? I dunno, I just don't enjoy reading her. Her and Nick's storyline in this arc has been the only one where I wasn't going "Nooo, I have to wait two days for an update!" With Karen, it's like, "Oooh, Karen strip-- drama time, fun fun fun!" Charisma just sets me on edge for some reason, I can't put my finger on it. She's too perfect, too sensual, too pushy, and has-- so far-- none of Karen's depth as a character... I'm sure that'll come out, but as it is I just can't get interested.

I'm open to persuasion, of course, and I kind of like to hear everyone's take on this. Civilly, I hope. *cowers behind pillow just in case*

p.s. Please don't take this as a criticism of T and Giselle-- I love all their other characters and everything else they've done with the comic. Charisma is just the weird anomaly that strikes an icky chord with me.

All I can think of right now:

Either she had Marshall fairly young (which is probably likely), or Marshall was a tough kid to raise. Or both.

I'm torn here: on one hand, Charisma does seem like kind of a "terrible example" of what sex can bring, especially if she makes comments like today's on a regular basis. On the other, he can still talk to her about it, and I have a hard time believing that if she knew about whatever's making him weird, she'd send Karen into the showers like that. So there could have been another girl, at least to my mind, although that's not an absolute.

You know, ever since Marshall and Charisma showed up, I had just assumed she was his mom. It thought it was obvious, and for a long time I had deluded myself into thinking it was blantantly stated in the comic.

So, when I discovered the comic made no such reference ever, my world was sent spining for a minute. The possibility that Marshall and Charisma were unrelated was something deeply incongruous with my vision of the comic as a whole.

But now they are. So, yay.

But wait wait wait. Aggie's dad knows Aggie likes Marshall, yeah? And he also knows Marshall is Charisma's son, yeah? Or am I misreading that last comic?

I thought the same thing, so it's good to know I'm not totally crazy. =>

As for the two comics... it's possible Nick has told himself there's no way it's the same Marshall, because that's just too much straight out of a soap opera to be true!
Or... at that moment he didn't know, and later he's just totally forgotten that entire episode so he can't put two and two together. Parents forget things. Even if it seems like it's important to Aggie. Even if it really WAS important.

By the looks of things, you folks are forgetting one relatively simple explanation for her actions/responses. Parental concern.

Consider her own attitude towards sex (healthy, part of a relationship etc).

Consider that nearly all the other boys in the comic seem to be getting their groove on.

Then consider that Marshall isn't.

He hasn't expressed any overt interest in religion, so it doesn't appear that he's holding back due to religious beliefs. She knows from her own youth that guys Marshal's age tend to be sexually active or at least are interested in sex.

Not a peep out of him on that subject. (And if she cleans the house, the lack of dirty mags and weirdly smudged underwear, may also be weirding her out.) Possibly, she may have thought him gay, well letting him work at the gym would soon tell her whether he was or not and get the ball rolling, if he was. Instead, she learns that he does appear to be interested in at least one girl.

Possibly, he's expressed to her his affection for Karen, or she simply drew her own conclusions based upon their interactions in the gym.

Yet still no bed creaking or trying to sneak off, hickeys etc etc.

So she tried to force the issue a bit, figuring that no guy will say no to a girl, for whom he has romantic feelings, and especially not if she shows up naked with him in the shower.

Hence her asking, and considering his responses, she's figured out that her ploy has failed and thus the rather testy answer to his question.

So what causes Marshall's attitude towards knocking booty? She might not even know herself, hence her trying to force the issue a bit. Figuring, he'll losen up a bit, once he gets laid.

It's really no different from the cliche of the father taking the son to a brothel on his age of majority.

I agree with Is_Wolf here, it really isn't much different. The only way I can relate is to compare the situation to real life, and I've been there. Not so much as being disinterested in sex, but in being interrogated by my parents. And this goes for my older brother too...we don't find it particularly "wierd" to talk to our parents about sex, we both got over it when we got past puberty. You become and adult, and you realize, "hey! my parents are adults too! Maybe, just maybe, I can have a mature conversation with them! I can ask my mom questions about this that or the other!" Case in point, I don't find it overly unusual to have my mom ask if my new husband and I have been making her a grandbaby...it's just a part of life. Just like when I lived with my parents, it wasn't unusual to come in an empty house and catch them in the act. A bit embarrassing, sure, but not unusual...especially since it's common knowledge that my dad was "clipped" several years ago. So, no, I don't find Charisma's comment to Marshall overly ugly or nasty, he asked her if she was ever worried about the long term effects of sex, and she answered him openly and honestly. I'm not without hope that T and G won't leave us hanging on finding out more about Charisma's and Marshall's relationship as mother and son...and how Aggie and Marshall react to their parents dating.

Edit: changed a name

I really don't think Charisma was trying to release the hounds on Marshall when she asked Karen to help him close. I'm pretty sure she had something else on her mind, and was trying to excuse herself.

If she really had thought something happened, don't you think she'd push the issue?

Though, in that vein, why would she not keep on about why Marshall didn't want to talk about closing up the gym...

Well, her reaction is fishy, but I still don't think she intended the outcome.

Past, Present, and Future....

Postby Sassy-fras on Fri Nov 03, 2006 11:37 am

Past thoughts: I really can't see Charisma being Marshall's mom. Rich and Charisma have a similar "eh whatever" attitude when faced with people. Kinda dominant.

Present thoughts: Wow. I shouldn't be surprised by this outcome, but I am. There's a lot going on here that I'm not seeing.

Future thoughts: I refuse to make anymore assumptions on these characters...because clearly....it's always going to turn out the way I don't expect it too.

^_^ The End!

Agreed. They both seem pushy. A similarity that I just began to recognize.

Devil's advocate: Maybe Marshall is adopted and thus his issues lie with his biological mother and not Charisma, who may have adopted -because- she had some fertility issue or something and had her tubes tied (she seems rather young for a doctor to agree to that, most of the time if you're under 35 a doctor will strongly suggest you shouldn't or refuse to perform the surgery)

I don't really think that, but it's a possibility that no one's suggested yet.

Wow! This is fascinating, because once you compare them, Charisma and Karen are both *very* similar in temperament and personality -- I think Marshall must have fallen for someone very similar to his mother, which happens a lot, despite a person's best conscious attempts to avoid it, at times ... I think it does explain a lot about Marshall's personality, though, having Charisma for a mother.
