Hall fight (5/26)

Postby Black Mantha on Fri May 26, 2006 2:10 am

It looks like Aggie and Penny's bickering is now a focal point for some school-wide tension. Great. :-? Just as Aggie's trying to be "the bigger woman", everyone seems to be pushing the situation towards escalation.

Did you guys notice that Penny hasn't said a word to, or even looked at Aggie?
I bet you did.

Did anyone notice that Aggie's reply made the point she helped Penny out here?
I bet none of them did.

I want to see P & A bust out into an acrobatic fight scene with roundhouse kicks and flips, like portrayed in that speech bubble. Oh man that would make my day.

I'm not so sure of Aggie's good intentions. Back when I was in high school, I was at the top of my math class. I sincerely doubt I was even close to being the best in the school, but that's another story.

One thing you learn very, very quickly when you excel at a subject is that nobody -- absolutely nobody -- wants to see your hand shoot up every time the teacher asks a question, especially a difficult one that nobody else knows how to answer. It's just rubbing it in their faces, and it pisses people off.

That said, to interject when the second-best (we assume for the moment Aggie is the higher scoring of the two) scoring student in the school is being asked a question, and furthermore to give a showy answer... you're either really, really, really stupid; asking for people to hate you; or intentionally trying to show up the other person.

It's never an act of altruism, that I can guarantee you.

Aggie's jab in the following comic only seems to further imply that she didn't really do this to help Penny out, regardless of what she may have thought to herself about being the better person.

And that's the first and last time I'll analyze a Penny and Aggie strip. :D

Here's something: Did anybody notice Penny glancing out of the corner of her eye at Sara? I wonder if that's an offshoot of the "relationship" thing? Perhaps in her look, Penny was saying, "See? If Aggie and I were "lovers", she wouldn't have shown me up like that!", or, "Now don't you think Penny 'helping' me out like that means anything!"

And thank you for putting the date on the title. Perhaps we can consolidate the discussion for today's subject to this thread only. :D
Thanks.

I never actually got that "nobody likes you to raise your hand for everything" thing. I got that the teacher would seem to get annoyed ('cause she wanted to call on everybody, not just a couple of showoffs), but it seemed rather like most of the other people there couldn't care one way or the other about, y'know, class. *shrug*

What Akilika said. Sometimes a rueful "godamn" was thrown in if it was like the fifth in a row but if the teacher called on the kid with the answers she couldn't call on you, which meant you couldn't be embarrased.

Don't forget Aggie's expression in the little 3rd panel. And here I am, despising myself for having a problem of dropping things, forgetting it can go too far the other way around.

I dunno...I'd rather envision a West Side Story-esque, choreographed fight.

When Penny looks at Sara like that I interpreted it as, "See? Are you gonna say Michelle is love with Aggie too?!"

Sara just seems to think everyone is secretly in love with each other.

Actually, I thought Penny's look to Sara was a matter of calculation, as in, "If I step in and mix it up directly with Aggie now, am I feeding the notion of there being a "seething, roiling bond" between us?" In other words, I think she's hanging fire on this fight because she's second guessing her motivations, again. Or maybe she's starting to wonder just why Sara is so fascinated with a relationship that no one else seems to see...

And that would involve them wearing bikinis while fighting in mud?
OMG! Did I said that out loud?

Anyway: About the hand-raising, perhaps Aggie got in the middle of a teacher questioning one of her peer about something she should know, Alas, English Literature is not Penny's strongest topic (as seen here)

But I think Michelle is overreacting. She's making a storm inside glass of water, thus creating a fuss that will only end in her (and Penny) being ridiculized by others. This time, Aggie didn't mean to answer for the sake of minimizing Penny, like she has done before.

Alas, in the third panel, looks like Aggie let her resolution of being a better person slipped a little, for the enjoyment of Samantha, Shaggy and Velma...wait, wasn't that the name of those two?

BTW: Nice portray of secondary characters Gis. 8) I really enjoyed seeing Cydi in today's strip... without her stole...

EDIT: corrected a name

Bright day
Mbtiru- I do not know much about your school experience, but I know of teachers who go through half of class, carefully choosing the "normals", and while these things are not graded in US they are graded at least here in Czechia, so while they don't like us nerds answering it, they get big collective sigh.

That said US schools are not so shark like and Aggie could have just thrown Penny a ball.
I know my posts are confused but they merely reflect state of my mind.

I don't think Aggie's really trying to be the bigger woman.

Aggie's expression in the third panel isn't really one of altruism. I don

I think her motives started off altruistic (albeit kinda showing off), but they became less so after Michelle started ragging on her.

i guess my interpretation of Penny's dirty look towards Sara was a little more basic: Penny's mad because Sara's not backing her up the way Michelle is.

Hm. It seems to me that Penny shouldn't have to rely on anybody to do her own work for her. She's proven to be pretty strong on her own. IMO, Michelle's being an idiot, and is getting upset over nothing.
Thanks.

If someone decided to start bitching 2 inches away from my face because I got a right answer I'd more than likely react just as Aggie did.

And then throw a roundhouse kick.
