Speaking of raunch....

This is a bit off topic, but considering all the fanservice we've been recieving lately, I was curious...other than Waspi, what's everyone's favorite risque comic? My current favorite is Richard Moore and his Boneyard series...used to be Phil Foglio's Xxxenophile(which managed to venture into porn territory without losing the concepts of humor or a good story), but then he went and had kids, and is apparently too afraid/domesticated to draw the naughty stuff anymore.

I have enjoyed Supermegatopia, which features a lot of nudity without much (any?) sexuality. Wierd sense of humor, too. Not much sense of narrative flow, however.

Whoas! XXXenophile isn't exactly what I'd call "risque"--but it was fine stuff. My picks:

Online risque: The wacky Girly has the occasional tasteful lovemaking scene between characters I love dearly. There is also a kitten made of marshmallow. What's not to like? And that's just for starters.

Online nasty (pay): Oh look--same guy runs Slipshine! A heart (and other organ)-pounding cornucopia of talents.

*sigh* Okay, fine--it's a pornucopia of talents.

Online nasty (free): Gold Digger's Fred Perry is teh awesome. A mix of adult and non-adult sketch stuff here, both risque and ultranasty hardcore jeezus lookit that gawwwwwk fappity fap.

Print nasty: It was a one-shot, but Paul Way's Stranded On Planet X (Radio Comix) was an awesome porn-romp. Absolutely recommended and well worth the search.

Toon risque: Sheeeeeeeeiiit. Futurama, baby. Where you at?

To the best of my knowledge, the original source of that sound effect is here.

As for online sexy art in general, I'm quite partial to the drawings of Julius Zimmerman. In particular, I prefer many of his drawings of Jessica Rabbit to the original. Looking at stills and licenced products from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it's obvious that a human built this way could never stand up, much less walk. I think Julius, like Pablo himself, helps to remind people that female beauty is not confined to one particular range of proportions.

Ok, that particular picture actually displays various degrees of "busty" but you get the idea. And yes, this is a stock rant of mine, could you tell?

Another source for material from a wide variety of styles and creators is alt.binaries.nospam.toons (Usenet group).

Sexy Losers is the best notty comic out there. Other than that, Poe does some wonderful risque moments in his comics.
And there's Angels 2200, which has AWESOME in-shower scenes ;)

re: Phil Foglio
To be fair, Girl Genius is light years ahead of any of his other work for storytelling; with the possible exception of Buck Godot. Mind you, I love xXxenophile; but it's good to see an artist/writer branch out like that.

As for other risque' comics, there aren't really all that many that I'm reading right now. There are so few that are able to combine good writing with sex. The two seem to be mutually exclusive as a rule; and the exeptions (like Foglio, or Moore, who I haven't read much of yet, but intend to) are few and far between.

I'm a huge fan of Michael Manning. Unfortunately, he's very very slow in putting out any new material. Amazing artist and excellent storyteller, just not as productive as we should want.

I'm currently getting the Genus and Milk anthology comics from Radio Comix; but have noticed that both the writing and artwork have declined in recent months, as most of their best contributors have left to work on their own projects (such as the aforementioned Boneyard). Hopefully this is just temporary.

Supermegatopia is another long-time favorite. It's more pin-up/cheesecake than erotic, and the humour can get a bit on the sophomoric side at times; but mostly it's good silly fun.

There are a few I used to read, but find I just don't like that much anymore. Mostly because of the lack of writing quality. A lot of the writers I knew who were doing more sexually-oriented stuff have either dropped out completely, or are doing non-sexual work (and doing it much better).

Would be interesting to see a really good comic creator (like Pablo) put out some higher-quality erotica. Hell, with the way the fanservice is going, he's halfway there already. :D

*blush* xXxenophile has a good mix of sexuality and silliness. To be picky, there are a few things that bug me - like the propensity of people to shout out that they are orgasming. Nobody I've slept with has ever done that, and it seems so artificial. I figure that there are other ways you can tell.

For X-rated raunch, i really liked "Utopia Unlimited", by Charlie Wise (who also did "Blue Moon: The Adventures of Lyssa and the Pirates"). That was actually put out under the xXxenophile title, though not done by Foligo. I think "Blue Moon" was wonderful for risque (but it's been so long since I've read it, sob).

I generally prefer pinup/cheesecake or written word erotica; hardcore explicit stuff isn't my taste. I don't "get off" looking; i just like having pretty pictures to view. Like most women, I'm not as visually oriented as guys. Not that i don't appreciate it... i just don't think it's the same sort of appreciation.

(*suprised that nobody has mentioned Milo Manara or "Omaha the Cat Dancer"*)

*click* ;)

I just got into some literary erotica about six months ago, and came across some Tom Robbins. I like a writer who isn't afraid to be vulgar when it conveys the right sense of impact and fit. His Skinny Legs and All is one of my favorite books.

On the shark-jumping end of the pool, The Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille. Effing gross. I can appreciate the impact and innovation and sheer ballsiness of it, but still think it's nasty-like-a-boil. Could not finish it lest my month's supply of soap be exhausted. :o

Ooo, before I comment, A couple of others that I completely forgot about.

Colleen Coover's Small Favours. Very good sense of humour, silly, girly, light, and fun. Not deep, introspective stuff; but not sophomoric fluff either.

I've also liked what little I've seen of Raven Ruiz's work.

I tend to be similar. I like a good combination of visuals and text (one of the reasons I really like comics); or if strictly visual, then something that carries more of a story or wider context, rather than just plain animal coupling. Some of my favorite visual stuff is Japanese softcore/glamour photography and video. They'll do things like shooting an enourmous landscape, or old traditional building, with the model being only 10 percent of the image, off in a corner. It's still highly erotic, because of the context and juxtaposition. Setting is an important part of the image. And the models also tend to look like they're actually having fun.

I do like some hardcore stuff, but mainly when it's in a larger context. Just seeing two (or more) people fucking doesn't really do much for me. It won't hold my interested for more than a few minutes at most. After that I just get a sort of "yeah, seen that, what else is there?" I really don't like the vast majority of mainstream porn. Not because i find it "degrading" or bad per se (though a lot of it is); but because it's just boring. No one looks like they're actually enjoying what they're doing. So far, the only place I've seen the kind of stuff I like is in comics.

A friend described her idea of quality porn as "a regular movie, with sex". That's pretty much what I want, too. Not like those stupid "erotic thrillers" starring former Playboy/Penthouse models, with all the highly stylized and completely stupid pseudo-sex; but more a kind of "Acadamy Award nominees" where the sex is shown, instead of just implied. I'm not holding my breath.
(*suprised that nobody has mentioned Milo Manara or "Omaha the Cat Dancer"*)

I forgot Omaha because it's essentially dead at this point; though It's one of my favorite older comics -- one of my earliest introductions not only to the anthropomorphic genre, but to comic erotica in general. Manara, not so much. I find it too mannered and stereotypical in it's treatment of sex and sexual situations; and I find most of his characters boring or irritating or just plain unpleasant. That goes for nearly all others i've read as well. The characters are just plain uninteresting or unpleasant; or the book itself is just plain sophomoric and stupid.

I'm also a big fan of Robert Crumb, though not typically as erotica, since his work is far too twisted and misanthropic to be arousing.

VERY LATE EDIT: I just realized two things:

1. I really go waaaay over the line with the links below. Choatik started off discussing "risque," but although (most of) the sites I link below are, in my opinion, very excellent art, they're also, arguably, raunch.

In my defense, I think I was thrown off a tat from the beginning with the title of the topic. One person's "raunch" is another person's "risque" and vice versa. So as a compromise, this warning: links NOT work-or-family-safe, proceed with caution.

2. Perhaps the topic title should be altered to include "The Sexy Room:" as per the "ADULT CONTENT" thread's rules. Don't want anyone getting into trouble over this...

* end VERY LATE EDIT *

-----------------------------

Great Goddess--how could I forget about The Poster Book Collections of Masamune Shirow?

I enjoy toonrotica that goes where real life can't. I must confess to a love of that tentacle-hentai which so VERY many disdain and loathe...although I must ALSO point out that I prefer the sort that's NOT ultraviolent...and even consentual. Stuff like you'll see from Kajiyama, whose stuff can be savored here, as well. (Don't you DARE look at me like that. There are far worse things to find erotic.)

Hey, whattaya afraid of? Go peek. I won't tell.

*praying for medical science to some day grant me giant tentacles*
*knowing I'll probably wind up looking like Zoidberg*

I recommend looking around Lucid Skin, too. All sorts of great artists listed and linked there.

NOTE: Thanks, Fhqwhgads, glad it made you laugh. Your avatar always gives me giggles.

Ah, another thing which bugs me about xXxenophile: the propensity of Foligo to draw pneumatic breasts.

I'm actually not too keen about Manara or Omaha either. Manara - um, his male characters seems to be exploitative. Omaha just didn't grab me; but i did like the wide variety of body types depicted.

For Tom Robbins, my favorite was Jitterbug Perfume.
