"Sigil Prep" Disc/Infothread - One More Spot Open!

Postby Drayco on Thu Jan 13, 2011 4:32 pm

http://www.sigilprep.com/ for those who have no idea what I'm talking about.

ChroniclerC reminded me of an old D&D campaign that never got off the ground, designed to be set in this Sigil Prep setting. Though the game never went anywhere, I think it might actually work for an RP of some kind around here.

The short version is that this is a college/university for Adventurers, of the typical sword-swinging, sorcery-slinging, serpent-slaying, several-similar-such-S-sounding-synonym variety. A rather prestigious one at that, one normally for the children of already successful (i.e. Rich And Famous And Heralded By Bards Everywhere) Adventurers, or those who've got Ancient Prophecies and Great Destinies about them, and a few who just got accepted on really good scholarship programs.
It's housed in an extradimensional setting, with easy access to any plane between Celestia and Baator, and a number of those weird chaos ones off to the side.

Obviously the concept is designed based on Dungeons and Dragons, but given that everyone here has crazy imaginations, I'd meddle it to extend to any fantasy world you can find fitting. The classes and curriculums would still be based on the usual Adventuring Archetypes (rogues, swordsmen, holy knights, wizards, clerics, monks, even that rather large demonic-influenced brooding antihero program they just made...), and the whole thing will have a kind of tongue-in-cheek humor about the whole fantasy hero deal. This is a college for heroes and villains alike, and the Headmistress will probably still be someone of deific power.

With the apparent need for LIFE around here, would anyone be interested in such a thing?

Looks intriguing. Given my love for DnD, I may have to sign up. However, given how busy I SHOULD be, I may not. We shall see which wins out.

So, I took a risk and did something I don't normally do. I clicked on a link. And now I'm laughing. So far the associates degree in escaped slave is my favorite. Not that I'll use that one or anything. It just made me laugh.

Why yes, there are numerous degrees in the psionic arts. Get your degree in Telepath, Divination, or Emotionally Unstable Psionicist, among others!
All psionic majors are required to take PSI101 during their first term, "Telepath Ethics". No mindf**kery here, thank you very much! And be careful, reading your classmates' minds for test answers might be frowned upon in other classes, but in Psionic majors, it's encouraged! :D

I'm in with two. Bill the Paladin, returning to school, and an Avariel(winged Elf). I noticed the Exchange Students page, but didn't see Avariel there. I did see Faenare, whatever that is. But the Avariels make perfect material for this! Prime personality for Pretty Little Rich Boy(or girl, haven't decided), self-obsessed, condescending, and probably very popular.

I'm not dealing with stats, as I don't want to force everyone to suddenly learn D&D mechanics. That would be silly. I'll come up with a bit format when it's not 2 AM.

Until then, things to keep in mind:
- Your Major will be essentially your class(/job/occupation) as an adventurer (Rogue, Fighter, Wizard, etc.), while your Minor will be more of the character archetype (Escaped Slave, Lone Wolf, Hero, etc). And as always, there's always a liberal arts major option, and multiple minors, and all similar college nonsense.
- Players may have two characters, though one of them must be a Freshman. In D&D terms, all Freshman are coming in at level 1. For the sake of my own craziness, however, I'd prefer that if you want to play a second character (i.e. upperclassman, or maybe even a teacher) you already have some basis of knowledge in D&D or fantasy RPGs in general.

Doublepost cause I'M A REBEL~!

Code: Select all
Name: Duh
Race: (Yes, this is based on D&D, so Lego Genetics are allowed. Anything you can explain will be accepted)
Age: (There is no age restrictions due to the obvious variance among fantasy races, but keep in mind that Firstyears tend to be the 'right out of high school' age college folk. Still not a restriction to that tho.)
World of Origin: (Optional, will almost definitely never be visited, so purely for flavor)
Major: (Your 'Class', i.e. what general skillset you use as an Adventurer. See list below.)
Minor/Concentration: (Your archetype. If you can find it on TVTropes, it probably works. Make sure it fits the Major though.)
Grade: (All players first characters will be Firstyears, if you want to play a second they can be any. See below.)
Means Of Acceptance: (i.e. did you get an Invite and Scholarship, have an Alumni in the family, or are somehow managing to pay it yourself?)
Appearance: (Basic physical description, and a general idea of clothing style when not in uniform. I haven't made the uniforms yet, but they're most likely brown and white.)
History: (As long as you want it. I have no problem reading novels. ;) )

Alrighty, notes:
- Sigil Prep (I'm keeping the name) is somewhat well known, but only among the more experienced adventurers. If you're going here, it's likely because you were sent an invite and a scholarship with it, or you have a former alumni in your family or friends. I'd love to hear any other reasons, though, so go nuts.
- Firstyear is not the same as Freshman. Firstyears are essentially a trial year, started last year due to a rise of shenanigans and dropouts among the Barbarian college, and the loopholes the Rogues kept pulling to get out of Gen Ed content. During your Firstyear, about half your classes that don't really have to do with your major, and will be with other Firstyears for the most part. At the end of Firstyear, you take a hands-on exam in the form of a 4-Man Dungeon Crawl as is the utmost standard for Adventurers, and only by completing this exam will you actually get into the full school. Failing the Firstyear exam means you have to repeat the year, and that's only if you can manage to explain how your scholarship or other means of staying at the school is still valid.
- FINALS. You have no idea what they are. Ever. Rumors have put them as being anything from gladiatorial matches to dungeon crawls to written exams, and YOU NEVER KNOW FOR SURE until you're taking them. The Dean makes very sure of that. Finals are dreaded by all but the most competent Badasses in the school.
- Dungeonball. Sigil isn't the ONLY one of these type of universities, it's just the most well known (and the only one with such a broad spectrum of races and majors). And Collegiate Dungeonball is the sport of choice. Essentially a cross between Football and Capture the Flag, the object of each round is for a team to find a single treasure hidden in the game's Dungeon, and return it to their base. It's a Three-Round game, with the first team to two wins being the victor. As a full-contact sport, everything goes in Dungeonball, including lethal force, hence the reason the sport has been often referred to as Murderball. Sigil Prep, however, is one of the universities that has proper wards and safety enchantments to prevent actual deaths, though some other schools don't require such strict rules...

Martial College - Majors
Tactics and Warfare - The masters of Tactics and melee expertise on the battlefield, the Warlord major is for all those who like a brain in their swordfighting rather than a brain impaled on their sword. While the majority of this major is specialized in leading armies and acting as part of a team, a Warlord still has a fair amount of skill in single combat. However, most of the cool tricks from this major are suited for team combat... and Sigil's famed Dungeonball player, Aurelius Lee, has proved it time and time again.
Paladin - A strict college with adherance to morality and goodness, entry into the Paladin program implies that you've already seen the light and visions of your deity of choice, and have accepted his or her call to duty. This year, Sigil Prep is introducing the Freedom and Balance variant programs, with hope to attract more to the Major since it remains the Major with the highest mortality and dropout rate in the school. We blame Sergeant Gray.
Barbarian - An incredibly popular program for its lack of Gen Ed requirements, Barbarian is for those who have no grasp of subtlety who just want to pick up something and hit monsters with it. Chaotic as its students may be, many of the best athletes on campus hail from here. Largely because most of the exams are just fitness tests, but hey, Sigil Prep has the title for Collegiate Murderball Dungeonball for 10 years running. Go Sigil Serpents!
Ranger - Now one of the the smallest majors in the school due to dwindling enrollment and a rise in the Lone Wolf minor, the Ranger college is somewhat of a generalist. Though its strongest focus is ranged combat and survival skills, melee and tactics are also included in the coursework, adding up to a well-rounded adventuring profession. Taking a variety of electives in Stealth and Natural Magic are also encouraged.
Swashbuckling and Stealth - A sword-wielding master of traps, an elite assassin, or just a thief with a quick tongue, this is the major for all those who want to work outside the law. While in most majors cheating and plagiarism is grounds for expulsion, in here, it's only so if you get caught!
Monastic Arts - A major largely regarded as "those weird guys over in Mangrove's hall," the Monk program is the smallest one on campus. The major for all those who seek discipline, enlightenment, and the perfection of body, the Monastic major has a 99% retention and graduation rate since its creation. That exception being the Monastic Hero program added many years back at the behest of the current Dean of Monastic Studies, Professor Boonchan Mangrove, supposedly "to Modernize Enlightenment".
Martial Magic - The major for all those who like a dash of the occult in their swordplay. Another extensive course, this degree is less its own set of coursework and more a series of electives from the Magical Majors. Martial Mages are encouraged to focus on one magical aspect to compliment their martial skill, as generalists tend to be more a novelty full of bad grades.

Magical College - Majors
Arcane Arts - For those not blessed with inborn magical prowess and only a keen intellect, and still want to chuck fireballs with the best of them, this is the the place for you. A popular major despite the amount of work required for it, Arcane Arts is the LARGEST program in the school, with an incredibly heavy courseload in particular for those who choose to double major with a Specialist Thesis. Nevertheless, many of the greatest Wizards and Mages graduated from Sigil Prep, so it's definitely a major with a good rep.
Sorcerous Studies - Hit puberty and suddenly started summoning demons in your living room? Or are you just some sort of magical creature who wants to get along in normal society? For all you supernatural beings with magical powers, this is the place for you. The courses offered in this major now involve many independent studies, largely because the populace students in the major's most popular Minor, Dark Magic Antihero, are assholes and nobody can stand to be around them long enough. Luckily they usually transfer out of the major halfway.
Divine Doctrine - The major for all those with faith, whether you act for war or for peace. While offering a number of courses crossed over with the Paladin major, this is primarily the major suited for combat healers at most, and simple resident holymen and medics at the least.
Natural Magic - Hippies. Those with a love of nature and adherence to its balance and perfection will find a home in this major. Offering some of the most varied and useful courses in the University, its a wonder that the major isn't as popular as some of the others. Possibly because unlike the Bardic major, this major actually has rather strict department heads and some fairly tough coursework.
Psionicist - A fairly small major with many courses encompassing all aspects of mental and psionic prowess, Psionicist is a small but popular major, if only for its sheer variety and dedicated students. Though the Psionicist-only dorm is referred to as "The Asylum," most of the major is quite sane, and has graduated many skilled alumni. Psionic majors are encouraged to double-Major at some point in their schooling, though the Psionicist-Only dorm rule is strictly enforced during Freshman year, until students successfully pass Psi-Ethics.
Bard - Have a taste for the arts, or just like being a traveling jack-of-all-trades? Be a Bard! Despite that nearly all of the bad rep that the university gets comes from these slackers, the few elves and true artisans in the program keep it afloat. A popular program for its outrageously laid-back professors, the Bard college remains a constant aspect of the University. Strangely enough, however, for all its bad rep this major has produced some of the greatest scribes and historians the multiverse has ever seen.
Artificer - The biggest nerds on campus The Artificer major was once a fringe of the Bardic major, but split in recent years into its own program. It encompasses all forms of crafting and design, whether magical, engineering, or simple smithing. Though largely full of creative types... the Dean of Artificery, Rusgard Hardalric, is a dwarf who has no patience for imperfection and shenanigans.

Name: Avery Swiftwing
Race: Avariel (winged Elf)
Age: 40
World of Origin: Faerun
Major: Ranger
Minor/Concentration: Spoiled Little Rich Boy
Grade: Firstyear
Means Of Acceptance: Rich parents
Appearance: Avery is an Elf. A very pretty elf. With very pretty wings. His hair is a soft silver, almost the exact shade of his feathers, though it can be hard to tell, as it shifts with the lighting. His eyes are a very grayed blue, his skin is really quite pale, and his muscles, while not bulked, are certainly toned. All in all, he's very bishi. Avery is quite tall for an elf, taller than most humans, even, at about 6'2", and he has a spring in his step everywhere he goes. He likes wearing flowing clothes, especially those easily windblown, though he dislikes robes, for obvious reasons. He always has a comb in his back pocket.
History: Having been raised by a pair of very rich parents, Avery is kinda spoiled. And by kinda a mean a lot. Having lived only among Avariels, he has very strongly inherited the Avariel mindset, that any mortal who cannot soar the skies freely is a lower life form, to put it bluntly. It's not so much that he's a total brat, its that he has never known any other way of thinking. Recently, something happened to totally shatter his comfy cozy little life, though he doesn't only speak of it to no one, he avoids the topic like the plague. His coming to this college was a move decided for him by his parents, though he has really tried to make the best of it.

Name: William 'Bill'
Race: Human
Age: 27
World of Origin: Booke
Major: Graduate Program in Divine Doctrine
Minor/Concentration:
Grade: Sophomore
Means Of Acceptance: Scholarship
Appearance: Bill is not a tall man, but he is pretty buff. His skin has a faded ruddy hue, and his eyes are brown, under a top of black hair. He can be seen, when he's seen at all outside his studies, as a man far older than anyone else around, and he looks it, with his receding hairline and scars. The bags under his eyes don't help either. He wears his uniform most of the time, rarely going out, and therefore rarely wearing anything else.
History: Bill has lived and worked as a Paladin in the world of Booke for some time, though he was never quite good at it. Having suffered from many internal twinges in his time due to poor judgments, he has decided to try starting all over, devoting several years of his life to studying and becoming more devoted. As such, he sought out and acquired scholarships for this prestigious school, and managed to get in on the reference of an acquaintance of an acquaintance. He has since spent the past years buried in work up to his eyeballs, becoming more and more tightly strung, as he divides his studies between Divine Doctrine and Tactics and Warfare.

You can still do Escaped Slave as a minor, if you can figure out a way to justify how you're paying tuition.

Name: Katarina Alys De'Arnis
Race: Stormsoul Genasi (Human/elemental crossbreed)
Age: 19
World of Origin: Waterdeep, Faerun
Major: Martial Magic
Minor/Concentration: Action Girl
Grade: Firstyear
Means Of Acceptance: Fostered by a friend of her family, who is an alumnus.
Appearance: Most places, Katarina would look out of the ordinary. Luckily an extraplanar school, much like her home city of Waterdeep, has a wider notion of normal than most places. Still, a rather handsome young woman with a fondness for knee boots, tight breeches, and frock coats will stand out most places. Katarina is short for a woman, with the build of an acrobat rather than a courtesan, and prone to moving from stillness to rapid motion with little warning. Her elemental heritage shows itself subtly in in her faintly silvery skin and dark hair that somehow always appears wind-tossed despite being cut boyishly short and often confined by a headscarf. The eyes are what truly give her away, though. Normally the pale grey of overcast skies, Katarina's eyes shift with her volatile temper, darkening like thunderheads looming on the horizon.

(In truth, the hair and skin colors are only the tip of the iceburg, as a ring bearing the De'Arnis family crest that Kat wears on her left thumb contains a minor magic to make her appearance more human to let her blend in. Should she ever be comfortable enough around others to drop the illusion, her nature will be much more obviously described in-scene.)

History: Daughter of a minor merchant house out of Waterdeep, Katarina was born into a family only a few generations removed from the days when they might have been preying on merchants rather than trading with them. Her father, Cedion De'Arnis, is a retired merchant captain who several times saw action against pirates operating out of Skullport. His stories of the adventure on the high seas struck a chord with his youngest daughter, and Kat talked her way into serving as a midshipwoman on one of the family's ships by the time she was 14. Under the watchful eye of her older brother, she developed a reputation among the sailors as a fearless and fey sort of girl, unafraid of any weather the stormy Sword Coast could throw at them. Her father just laughed at the tales the men told of her, knowing that his own wife had been much the same in her younger years.

Unfortunately, the last few years have been bad ones for the De'Arnis family. Katarina earned her first scars two years ago, desperately defending the ship with her own very limited skills alongside her brother Verin and the crew when a pirate corsair caught them becalmed a few days out of Waterdeep. When the two of them staggered into port, bloodied but victorious, it was the end of Kat's sailing career. Obedient to her father's demand that she not sail in such dangerous waters, she kept to shore.

Peace has never been something that any spirit of the storm could deal with in the long term, so before restlessness finally began to drive her to more and more risky behavior in search of something fulfilling, Kat's father had a brilliant idea. The young woman jumped at the chance to attend Sigil prep, and an old friend of her mother's was more than willing to supply a letter of introduction for her goddaughter.

Wow, the MonkE returns!

In other news, I'm off to fix up my bios. They need a bit of work.

Name: Reginald Timothy Wyrd (Pronounced “Weird”)
Race: Human
Age: 18
World of Origin: Planet Bob (AKA Earth 2. Don't ask...)
Major: Artificer
Minor/Concentration: Brilliant but Lazy
Grade: Firstyear
Means Of Acceptance: Sponsored by an Alumnus
Appearance: Fairly short dark brown hair. Lithe build, fairly tall, Caucasian, and kind of a pretty boy. Tends to wear simple, plain looking clothing. Also has a large brown cloak that belonged to his father, which he wears in colder temperatures, or when he needs to look foreboding and mysterious.
History: Reginald is a dreamer. As far back as he can remember, he has fantasized about the life of a hero. Traveling the world, saving people from bandits, slaying dragons. Hell, Rothyre the First fought the gods to recreate the world! If only he could make something of his life like that. The only problem was that his world had no need for heroes these days, yet despite this, he never stopped dreaming.
His school career was simple enough. None of the work was ever that challenging to Reginald. When others would get together to study, he would spend his time playing and replaying heroic battles in his head. As the years went by, he had gained a reputation as something of a slacker, of doing whatever he felt like when he should be studying. Even with his lack of interest in his studies, he still managed to keep high grades.
One day, Reginald was approached by an older gentleman by the name of Ouldine. Ouldine explained to Reginald that he was a friend of his fathers, and that he had heard of the boy’s dreams of becoming an adventurer. He told Reginald of a far off school known as Sigil Prep and how it specialized in training heroes and adventurers from all across the planes. Ouldine had actually studied at Sigil Prep himself, and he saw potential in Reginald, that with the right training, he could become a great hero. He offered to pay for Reginald to attend Sigil Prep, and after taking a day to think about it, he accepted.

How's that? Anything need work?

I don't if I'll actually participate but I like making characters so what the hell.

Name: Tyrone Ramses
Race: Human, mostly. His nation of origin tends to encourage a bit of crossbreeding so he could pick out an orc here and an elf there on the family tree
Age: 18
World of Origin: Yaodune, the continent of Iropa from the Empire of Iron
Major: Paladin / Monastic Order
Minor/Concentration: Hot Blooded
Grade: Firstyear
Means Of Acceptance: Sponsor
Appearance: A dark brown skinned human, bald, round faced, big brown eyes, toned body couple with a generally youthful appearance. He wears a light brown gi with a black belt outside his armor. His armor is green and decorated with gold depicting the blindfolded goddess carying a scale weight on his shoulders and his thighs, scale weights on his chest and his visors take the shape of a golden blindfold. His knuckle are embossed from left pinky to right with golden letter that spells JUSTICE! when left imprinted in anything he punches.
History: Tyrone came from the Iron Empire, a millenia old government relativelly younger then its contemporaries but more magically advanced, economically powerful and cosmopolitan, supporting and supported by a rich planar trade. It was also home to a number of organizations that could be classified as 'Lawful Good' despite an emperor classifiable as 'Lawful Evil'.
Once such organization was a monastic order. They were of the same school of thought as drunken monks, that absolute discipline was not the only way. Instead of getting wasted at a pub they honed their power through hot bloodedness and a thirst for JUSTICE! The Monastery of JUSTICE(!) largely worshipped a Goddess of Justice uncleverly named Justina and every generation or so gifted a young prodigy with some magical armor and declared them her paladin of JUSTICE!
Tyrone was this generation's paladin. He called upon the Goddess's armor by crying out 'HENSHIN!'
The Emperor paid the monastery a visit and offered to sponsor the boisterous young man top notch education at Sigil Prep, an extra planar school that had everything a warrior of JUSTICE(!) needed to grow and learn. His ulterior motive was to see if the school could be used to train even more warriors and perhaps establish more extraplanar connections all for his empire.

What major do I have to be to get to cast Lord Ruby-Eye Shabranigdo's spell? Or rather, could successfully casting this be considered grounds for a scholarship of some sort?

Darkness beyond twilight
Crimson beyond blood that flows
Buried in the stream of time is where your power grows
I pledge myself to conquer all the foes who stand
before the mighty gift bestowed in my unworthy hand
Let the fools who stand before me be destroyed
by the power you and I possess...
