Rest in Peace, Lohti... please add thought/anecdote/memories

Postby Lomgren on Tue May 26, 2009 2:54 pm

Friends, forumgoers, and everyone in general, it is with a sad heart that I must inform you all of this. I was only able to confirm it today.

As many of you knew, Lohti was in the military. Most of you probably didn't know his real name, unless you dug around a bit. But, recently, on the news here where I live in Missouri, was the story of a soldier going crazy and killing several others at a stress clinic in Iraq. One of them was Jacob D. Barton, age 20, of Lenox, Missouri.

http://www.militarycity.com/valor/4088275.html

When I first heard about it, I was wondering, but I wasn't sure, but the name Jacob Barton seemed familiar to me. After a couple minutes of googling today, I turned up that article. And a few things clicked from my past conversations with him. So I did a bit more checking. Lohti hadn't been on since May 10th. The attack happened on the 11th. Several of the things in the article sounded like him, and he lived in Lenox, etc, etc. And then I googled the name combo "Lohti Jacob Barton," which brought up deviantArt.

http://lohti.deviantart.com

I forgot he had his name there, and that I was watching him. But that confirms it.

Rest in peace, dear Lohti.

Oh my god. This is terrible. It would have been bad enough if he'd been killed by an enemy combatant, but one of his own comrades who went nuts? What a waste.

At least he died a hero.

Fuck, I'm crying.

Rest in peace, Lohti.

Too much death around me. I can only hold so much whiskey, after all.

You all said that it'd be the death of him. I dismissed the notion as cynical. I REALLY hate it when I'm wrong.

It's taking all my willpower to keep from typing up a long string of curses right now.

I really do hope this is just an unfortunate coincidence involving someone with the same name from the same place.

But just in case, I am saddened as well.

Justice. I have to admit, I'm not one to admire the white knight. But even when you tire of the paladin's creed, that crap happens and suddenly it's worth something. Hoo.

"We evolve beyond the person we were a minute before! Little by little we advance further with each turn! That's the way a drill works!" Way relevant if you remember him from way back.

More good stuff. Celebrating life's all my heritage is good for, after all.

To all Bunnies, Mayhemites, forum-goers, Veterans, Civilians and otherwise:

It seems we are adding yet another to the list of friends that we have lost here. Whether it be that we knew these friends from the forums alone, or within real life, We all feel the hurt and the loss of our friends. This time, Lohti, or, to be more correct, Specialist Jacob Barton, of the United States Army is to be added to that very list. Such a list is one that we never want to have to place someone on, but to do so today, is to place one we can call a hero. A man who bravely fought for his country, over hundreds of miles of seas, miles from his home. Bearing the burden that only few can truly understand, that only few will ever know. The understanding of War. It is said that War is hell. There is so much truth to be had in that one statement alone. I know. Hell might be defined as a number of things. I personally feel that one might define Hell as a place with out God. But we can all take some comfort that he rests not in such a place any longer.

Specialist Barton served honorably, died honorably, and will forever be an honorable man. To quote a drill sergeant of my own, "Let us not mourn the loss of his life, but celebrate the life he lead, celebrate the times you shared with him, and never forget."

Specialist Jacob Barton, We All Stand Here Today, And Salute You, Hero Of Our Country Of The United States Of America. May You Forever Know Peace.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.
