Rejvak asked "You said it wanted wanted something done in return for its help?"

((Although he couldn't hear the spirit, as dusk was talking normally, he could hear him. Bit of a onesided conversation, but meh.))

((Like listening to one half of a telephone conversation, yea.))

Dusk turned to Rejvak nervously and cleared his throat. "I'll try to keep this as simple as I can. I tried to use some magic before which attracted the attention of the local spirits, which is what that creature was. It was mostly talking to me about why I wanted to use the spirits power. In the end, it seems it agreed to lend me its power as long as I did something to repay it afterwards. fairly reasonable yes?" Dusk nodded his head. "This spirit didn't seem that much different than the ones back home, so as long as we don't destroy what they represent, they shouldn't bother us too much."

The vehicles soon appear in the distance. A few moments later, they stop and MDM hops out. "There aren't any signs of hostile sentients here, although we did spot what appeared to be a ruined temple a few kilometers to the northwest. When you're settled in, you should go investigate it."

((Temple? I thought I told you to avoid sentience when you seeded the place!
OOCMal: I did! They must have found my shelter.
Shelter?
OOCMal: Just a humble Neoclassical two-story, three-bath lean-to I cobbled together.
...
OOCMal: What? Did you expect me to sleep exposed to the elements? Haroun was not terraformed in a day!))

((Or, it could be a generic elemental temple where the spirits of a given element live. you think humans made all those?))

((Yes. Gods need worship. Nondeific spirits, or at least many of the ones I'm familiar with, don't mind it, but don't feed on it either. These are just spiritual reflections of that which is present on the world. Architecture, artifice, and worship are concepts which are foreign to the mundane natives of Haroun. Nature spirits, to me, seem more likely to treat points of great natural beauty as places of power, no embellishment necessary.
That said, I really don't want to get into a metaphysical OOC debate, so I recommend we drop the subject.))

"Aye, sir."

((All right, seems I have to clarify the backstory on these guys. The ship that brought them here is a retired Victory-class Dreadnaught, Dauntless, that the Galactic Union retired. When the Dauntless left service, the mercenary group bought it from the Union. The entire crew of the Dauntless is part of this organization.

Edit: So, Book, that means they're not Marines.))

Rejvak nodded. "A good, honourable profession for a warrior. I considered becoming one myself, long ago."

After a pause, he got to what he came to ask. "You want to be paid to protect this settlement. I am going to try to determine if you are suitable. What is your strength and armament? If this settlement was attacked now, what would you do? What would you do if it was attacked after it had been established? How would you fortify a settlement built at this location? How often do you, personally, clean your weapons? If you were hired to protect this settlement, what would you do, as a group and personally, if you were offered a greater price to abandon or turn on it?"

((Ok, here goes...))

"Our strength and armament? We have several squads of infantry and some light assault vehicles. Altogether, about 30-40 personnel. If this colony were attacked now, we would form a defensive perimeter while the colonists fell back to a safe location, then fall back ourselves. If it were attacked after being established, we would aid the colonists in repelling the assault. If unable to, we would rally the settlers and retreat. Fortifications? We'd establish a sensor network to give us early warning of approaching hostiles. Second, we'd create a series of underground tunnels from which to launch surprise attacks. Finally, we'd build a defensive wall around the colony. I clean my weapons once a day. If I was offered a higher price to betray the people of this settlement, I would turn it down. As for my men, they are loyal, and would do the same."

Rejvak nodded. "You seem adequate."

He opened his case and took out several bits of metal and wood. The mercs would recognise what they were. Moments later, he had put the parts together and was holding an old and battered but obvously well looked after Degtyarev RPD light machine gun. He took a magazine from the case and loaded it, put the safety on and attatched a sling. Several spare mags went into pouches on a set of webbing which he put on. The machete was taken out of his belt and put in a sheath, which was then attactched to his belt, and the machine gun was slung on his right shoulder.

"I will put in a good word for you with those who wish to establish this colony before I leave."
