Planet Haroun: Mayhem's First Colony

Postby Piebunny on Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:04 pm

Lush, verdant fields. Clear skies. Tranquil forests. The planet Haroun lies diametrically opposed to planet Mayhem in the sun's orbit, waiting to be explored.

The colony ships are arriving.
That goat came to me of its own free will.

One of those colony ships contained a large Kurtung passenger. Rejvak saw this uninhabited planet as a good place to find what he searched for. He was asleep on his bunk, his luggage stowed securely.

A long, black haired girl, dressed in the uniform of a Lieutenant Commander, with the insignia of Chief Medical Officer, paced through one of the halls of the ship. Getting tired of pacing, she entered the ships main med-bay, and sat down on a unoccupied bench. Sigh.

A man, late twenties, or early thirties, sat in his room cleaning his weapons. Oh his uniform was the rank of Sgt.Major.
Basilisk and Cockatrice, a moral poem by The Prodigal
I dreamed I saw a Basilisk that basked upon a rocky shore
I looked upon the Basilisk with eyes of stone I looked no more.
I dreamed I saw a Cockatrice a-chewin on a piece of bone.
I gazed upon the cockatrice one cannot gaze with eyes of stone
To look upon a basilisk is really never worth the risk,
To gaze upon a cockatrice is permanent and never nice.

A boy in his late teens stood in a somewhat smaller room. He has dark green hair going down almost to his brighter green eyes. He had a nervous look on his face as he paced across his room. the symbol on his uniform showed his rank as Ensign, barley qualified to be riding on this ship.

In the same room, a scruffy young man, in a battered top hat and frock coat, holding a beat up walking cane and with a large carpet bag at his feet, a civilian colonist, smiled as the ship approached the planet. He could make a good go of it, here, doing what he did best. And, of course, those in power always payed well for information he gathered, and that helped to fund his travels. The planet itself was portentously named: Haroun, doubtless after Haroun Al-Rashid, the great caliph of Baghdad whose court was the setting for many of the tales of the 1001 Arabian Nights. Yes indeed, this would be a planet of adventure and adventurers. And adventurers are always in need of items....
The man smiled over at the boy.

The boy smiled weakly. "Yes, right, yes, exciting, that's the word for it ehehehe..." He swallowed as he looked out the window at the approaching planet.

The girl, who's name plate labeled her not only as a MD, but Lieutenant Commander Helene Bakker, stood up, and left the Med-Bay. She began wandering the corridors.

As the TWAT Serious Business waved them through, the first of the ships set down gently on Haroun's surface.

((TWAT? :okthen: ))

The boy visibly relaxed as the ship landed. He turned to the colonist. "Well, sir, shall we get off?"

As the ship landed, Rejvak opened his eyes. he stood up and grabbed his luggage. He left his quarters and bagan walking through the ship to the exit.

"Attention all colonizers and staff. We will be entering Haroun's atmosphere in 10 minutes."

The Serious Business will soon notice a small craft swing round the sun in a very fast orbit, obviously coming off a slingshot maneuver somewhere near the other side. As it approaches Haroun (somewhere in the next hour,) it will begin a deceleration burn to match Haroun's orbital speed and move into a planetary orbit.

Jason, a young man with long brown hair and a green jumpsuit, worked the engine room looking over the various gauges and what not to make sure everything was in working order for the landing.

"Roger that, Serious Business. Wayfarer out."

With that, the small craft finishes its deceleration burn and drops into a planetary orbit. Two small ROVs exit from a hatch and begin a quick inspection before atmospheric entry is attempted.
