Donnie Darko reference?

Postby Shadowdancer on Mon Aug 08, 2005 2:42 am

To quote today's (2005-08-08) comment:
When I was growing up I always wanted Hungry Hungry Hippos, but I never got it. I...I'm so bitter. No, really.

But you'd tell us if the world was coming to an end in about four weeks, wouldn't you? ;)

I swear the world never actually ended in that film? Or maybe it just confused me so I missed that part. Better go watch it again.

Donnie Darko

I've never watched it but, from what I've heard, it's a film that is open to interpretation.[1]

[1] The main reason why I haven't watched it. ;-)
I read several webcomics.

Definately one need to watch a few times before can really judge it. Personally liked the film, but agree can mess with your head if you let it.

As Donnie feels regret rather than being bitter over it, I would initially assume its just a coincidence, after all it was a fairly well publicised and popular game in its era.

It is a very good film however, although I would say its one you are likely to want to watch a couple of times at least to truly understand it - in some ways it has the same types of issues that films like Pulp Fiction and so on have (even if very different genre), in that a lot of what happens early on passes you by as superfluous but actually is fairly meaningful in the end.

Its hard to discuss the open to interpretation aspect without really getting into the spoilers so I probably wont, but I would say it does a good job examining a couple of very interesting philosophical issues in a way that is compelling and involving. Overall it makes you think, which can never be a bad thing. Certainly one or two of the core topics it revolves around there really have to be left open to interpretation at the end, because if philosophers/scientists for thousands of years havent been able to come down decisively on one side by now, its fairly certain a 1h30 or so piece of entertainment isnt likely to come up with the final answer, but it can raise the question it an interesting way.

I finally watched it the other day, and it's a good movie that is just a teen movie really. I can see myself holding it up as a great piece of generation defining cinema about ten years ago, but now it's just angsty little sci-fi thriller. It's like Fight Club minus the black humor meets the X-Files, and definately something that could only have come out of the 90s. I still liked it, but it wasn't revelational.

Darko is such a brilliant film. the lines do seem simlear, but i would just as soon chalk it up to coincidence unless we hear otherwise.

I'd put a caveat on that - the original film is better than the updated special edition - the former let you come to your own conclusions about things, the latter explains too much away.
You underestimate the power of the Dark Side -
