Wal-mart porn

Postby bloodeye on Mon Nov 15, 2004 2:11 pm

How long until wal-mart start carrying porn? And I'm not talking some softcore 'best of Baywatch' thing, I'm talking hardcorn, XXX stuff.

Was at the mall yesterday, headed thru a video store to check out their latest shipment of anime. Noticed they'd moved things around, and the anime was in a new place. No worries, but did notice a section off to the side of 'anime 18' (better known as hentai) videos. And next to that was a new section of X rated films.

Now, I know I'm not as young as I used to be, but I do recall a time where it was hard enough to get porn videos at all, let alone at a regular viedo store in a typical mall. Over the years, pornagraphy, though still catching flack from various parties, has become more and more mainstream. To me, the ultimate mainstream of the consumer world is to be sold at Wal-Mart.

So, how long until Wal-Mart starts selling porn? Personally, rough guess puts it between 10 and twenty years. Am curious what the rest of the board happens to think about it.

Your theory...

Personally, I would say 10 years tops. Maybe 5?

{edit}Maybe it's just because the years fly by faster as we get older, but it seems that attitudes seem to be changing at an ever increasing pace.

Porn mags mixed with the 'normal' ones here, only on the top shelf. No separate section. I agree, it's getting scary.

My guess is never actually. They won't carry CDs with explicit content, so they aren't going to sell porn.

As far as porn being hard to get, I've had access to the Internet for a long time, so porn shortae has never been a concern.

Walmart's from Arkansas. This is the buckle of the bible belt. The day they have Porn is the day that a Jewish Deli will carry honeybaked hams. It just won't happen. :-?

Yes I know I'm being stereotypical. No I'm not serious. But yeah. Walmart and porn. Nope. :D

Not only does WalMart not carry CD's with explicit lyrics... they have this very...hmmm...Nazi-like?... program where if you, as an artist with explicit lyrics, want your album on thier shelves, you have to record a WalMart friendly version of said album complete with altered lyrics. And here's the rub: WalMart doesn't even label that theres a difference in thier albums!

Couple all of that with the fact that WalMart was the only pharmacutical chain that flat-out refused to carry the "morning after" pill... yeah, no porn for WM.

It doesn't bother me one way or the other. I don't shop at WalMart unless there's just something I have to have at 4am.

I end up in Wallyworld more often than I'd like, but I'm in the pot with Gabe....those visits are necessity-based. But yeah.

Thing I didn't understand is that Walmart had the Grand Theft Auto games. I guess their rationale probably sounds like "You can bash in the heads of prostitutes in that game, that's God's will, so we'll allow it". Feh. Who knows.

I have to agree on principal...
I've never really gone searching for porn, bar downloading the occasional hentai comic from the internet (they're funny ok...)
But I sincerely doubt that supermarkets would stock porn. They'd be two worried about upsetting the customers since a wider range of people walk through a supermarket then the kind of stores mentioned above!

Lugnut: I actually saw a FPS game entitled "Sniper" on thier shelves right at the time the DC Sniper was the big thing. Needless to say, that wasn't on the shelf the next time I swung through.

Amby: Who goes to grocery stores for porn? I'm not sure that I'd want to know, but I think it's more of an attempt to get those "well, hell... I'm here, it's here. Why not?" kind of sales. Besides, I'm sure that WalMart wouldn't even see the irony (hypocrisy?) of rattling their saber about morals while still selling things that most people would question. It's all about the buck... and WM loves them some bucks.

Yeah, rather WHY chose WalMart as the final porn fronter. But still, think cash will win over moral in 10 to 20 years. Am sorta looking forward to the 'Women of WalMart' PlayBoy issue.

Women of Wal Mart? Shouldn't be too far off. They have a Women of McDonalds coming up... at least according to an article I saw on Fark (mmm.... McBoobies).

I just hope they don't come to my Wal Mart for that. *shudders*. Scary "women".

Wal-Mart tries to promote the "family unit" and "family values" ideas so thoroughly that they fire people for things like having afairs. To quote Wal-Mart company policy, "A dating relation between a married associate with another associate, other than his or her own spouse, is not consistent with this belief (family values) and is prohibited."

If Wal-Mart will do this, I doubt they'll sell porn. As was stated before, it got its start in Arkansas. Random, inefficient religious ideas are so strongly rooted into company policy that that will never happen. I honestly don't know if, and can barely believe that, anyone really believes that Wal-Mart cares about things like that, but the company itself seems intent on trying to sell that image, so I doubt they'll go against it.

Preeecisely. Whether or not they believe it is one thing, but fact is they want the world to think they do. Image is everything. Blargh.

And you didn't end that with some "obey your thirst" reference. I would have.... wait... I just did. See!

Meh.

I don't really care what image Wal Mart comes out trying to wear. I don't really even care what items the do or do not put on thier shelves. The only problem I have is the reasons why they do thier schtick. It's my personal opinion, I know... but I'm sorry, Wal Mart is just a little to big to be preaching about anything. They services waaaay to diverse of a society to stick to one end of it or another.

The truly scary thing is... considering how far they lean to one side or another, they still have not alienated (sp) enough of thier clientelle to put themselves in jeopardy.

Oh! Another amusing little Wal Mart story for anyone who plays paintball. They had a special paintball formulated (by a PaintBall manufacturer) that would last on thier shelves a lot longer. Well, my local PB field was putting these paintballs through the back of thier target range (that's corrogated sheet metal at about 25 yards!!) and someone, somewhere was killed with these things. Of course, Wal Mart stopped ordering these killer paintballs... but what are they doing with the stock they still have? SELLING IT! W00T!

Sorry. I love a**hat stories. :D

Women of McDonalds..... Are these the women working there, or pictures of extremely fatt naked women eating their burgers...
Cause I think the last one would be a more truthful depiction of the McDonalds food chain and their product!

they're also developing a self-censoring dvd player that automatically skips "questionable" content. it will be available at wal-mart.
also if you and your SO get a bit adventurous and say decide to take some interesting photo's of eachother, if you take them to wal-mart, not only will they not develop them, they'll also refuse to return your negatives. wal-mart has also in the past had a woman who was a professional photographer arrested because she took pictures of her grandchildren while being given baths.

no i doubt they'll ever do porn. because they don't need to. yeah they're all about the money, but for anyone who's lived much in the midwest, you realize that in some of these tiny rural towns, Wal-mart is ALL there is. you shop there or...well or nothing, you have no choice, you shop there.

and for mentalities like wal-mart, the world isn't diverse at all. there's people who think like they do, and people who are wrong. thats about it.

I'm pretty sure it's women working there. Playboy does a few spreads similar to that... mostly Women of the [insert College Area/Conference/whatever here]. As far as Mc Donald's goes, there were some cuties working there when I did (oh, so long ago). I doubt the ones of my age (at the time) would have been legal to appear in a PB, but hey... some of the older ones weren't that bad.

Which brings up another pont. I've never worked at McDonalds, but as I understand it their stuff consists of 14-16 year old temping for about three months before moving on to something better paying and more respectable...
A 'McDonalds Playboy' would barely have three pages if they wanted to keep it Legal. One must assume they posted an advert for

Or, even better, they could go with the 80+ year-old ladies that just need a small job to suppliment thier income while not jeopardizing thier gov't income. They'd be legal... scary, but legal.

BAH you can already find porn at wall-mart if you know where to look! I was working there a while back and went to walk down one of the rows in the shoe department. What did I find there but a guy with his pants down and a woman on her knees! EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
