01/17/2014 - Surprise?

So if there's anyone left who wants to see where the mess is going...

Bad guys are un-ironically selfishly evil and somehow able to lead hordes of soldiers without ever even pretending to care about their welfare.

Good guy is still so much better than ANYONE by comparison.

New threat is boring because they're still guys in suits with regular claws and crap while our intrepid heroine has not only survived vehicle-mounted weaponry that can blast through the hull of a space station, but was entirely unscathed.

...

So if it was that easy to stop the threat to the station, why did she wait until this page to do it?

Everyone she faces is unambiguously evil, incompetent, or both. Even the glimmer of sympathy we got for the wormhole aliens is utterly eradicated by the Countess just plain being a bitch who is wholly willing to eradicate her entire species' future on a vendetta.

"Hail to the void."

So BADASS.

So UTTERLY RETARDED. Yes, let's antagonize the only person who's stopping the invisible claw-troopers from killing you while simultaneously spending longer than necessary on a doomed ship - for NO REASON WHATSOEVER!

Utterly. Entirely. Retarded.

There are things called interstellar communications, retard. Dammit, Mookie. These guys are worse villains than cardboard cutout.

As predicted, Mookie has the protagonist experience a massive moral quandary at the prospect of killing one of the individuals that is presently trying to chop her to tiny bits.

And then Mookie negates it utterly in the same page with the revelation that her enemies are all robots.

I'm done.

No, really, I'm actually done, this time.

I mean it, I'm not coming back to watch this happen.

Murdering her own mother for daring to retreat wasn't evil enough. No, Mookie had her murder her entire species. This of course means that there are no factions among the forces of the Ninth Wormhole, they're all just robots commanded by one individual.

Any smart writer could have stretched out the wormhole aliens over the course of several arcs but nooooo, Mookie is intent upon blowing his wad this early. He's made an epic threat faced by generations of Star Powered Sentinels, which even started with a villain-behind-the-villain angle, into basically a disposable antagonist.

I think that's what irks me here the most. It's not that, at its core, we're working with bad ideas here. This could be very cool. The fundamentals are solid. Wasted potential really stinks.

Maybe Mookie took some of the criticism of some of the more drawn-out story arcs to heart... and ran as far as he could off a cliff in the other direction? Rather than a drawn-out story arc with terrible writing we're given an entire arc in the space of four comics with terrible writing?

It's considered cowardly or especially brutish to harm one of these. That means Black Hole Bill is SERIOUS BAD NEWS, GUYS! THAT SPACE-RACIST!! IT'S A GOOD THING DANICA SAVED THE DAY, RIGHT?!

Also they live in a perfect communist society where there's no violence or desire for resources. That makes these people super-superior to humanity. We should totally learn from the Shulentin. (I'd love to hear how it actually works without, y'know, scarcity or some measure of the population simply refusing to contribute if there's no incentive, by the by.)

I know I shouldn't be surprised by now that Mookie's going to soapbox with his meager world-building but he could at least stop being so damned predictable.

...

Who am I kidding... of course he can't!

It's the same way he was in a fantasy setting. All of his species are extremely stereotypical.

Also in retrospect: why give speeches to robots?

Well, one might claim it was because tongue-lady is completely batshit crazy.

More likely, however, it's that they weren't robots until Mookie realized Danica had to kill one.

Good grief, I thought I'd read Mookie's new comic to see how he'd ruin it.

Why, why, why didn't I come here first.

Did the artist intentionally hurt himself so he didn't have to continue with this crap?
