That seems a poor criticism to me and pretty inconsistent with the direction of much of the other criticisms leveled against Mookie. He's actually putting some level of danger in that could threaten the lives of characters now. Seems silly to chide him for taking a little time over a character's death. That doesn't seem like phoning it in to me. Anything else would feel rushed and since so much of this arc has felt rushed (including TIM's quick disappearance in yesterday's comic), I'd say this is the opposite of a poor choice. I only wish Mookie could keep things at an appropriate pace during action sequences. Those almost always feel too rushed in DD.

The last time we saw Bumper for more than a single panel was over two years ago. He hasn't gotten anything more than throwaway lines since his redemption arc in 2006. He literally showed up in this arc just to die.

How is that phoning it in? Bumper has been in this comic for 10 years, I think it makes sense to dedicate some time to his death.

I've been calling it for days and none of you believed me. Bumper is dead... and now begins people doing Siggy died edits for Bumper.
Brett:Yeah? How about I break your face instead?!
Rachel:I invite you to try, Taggerty.

Yeah, that's why I said I can admit when I was wrong and that I didn't think Mookie had it in him. Yeah. That's right.
Sarcasm aside, yeah, this isn't so much phoning it in. Mookie's actually handling a matter with some weight for once, rather than glossing it over. The heroes didn't win a battle. This comic finally has a sense of drama about it again, a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, it's just a step. There's still a heavy few things working against it. Bumper is a secondary character's secondary character, who hasn't been relevant for years and the only reason we have to still care about him is that he's Stunt's friend and Stunt is the current Mookie-darling. Like Traveler said, the only reason he showed up this time was to die, and his only defining character trait as of late was MY FWEND.
Next step is to kill someone actually relevant, rather than an old sock-puppet with snipped strings.

Alright Paladin, I admit, you were right. He had the stones to kill Bumper. I'm glad he's treating this death with dignity and class. Thumbs up Mook.

Yeeeeeah, I have to agree with this much. He was tossed to the wolves a little haphazardly. I'm fine with Bumper dying, but he wasn't around often enough for it to have full emotional weight.

Huh.

So he actually killed someone in his cast.

Too bad it wasn't anyone I wanted to die. Like Luna.

I guess the fabled amulet of Luana was just an inert piece of jewelry after all, who'd have thunk?

Hole through the chest, Karnak gauntlet wound which can't be healed, and no White Mages around for miles since TIM still has Gregs powers are in that black gauntlet. He's dead.

Just wait for the funeral, then we can say stuff. There have been more ass-pulls.

But yeah, likely to stay dead (or at least, whatever passes for dead in this comic).

Anyone want to bet on Dominic allowing Stunt to have a meeting with Bumper in the afterworld or something?

I felt myself summoned back here on Friday... I resisted until today.
