Pablo, if it isn't too much of a spoiler, can you tell us what it says on the side of the box? The name doesn't look like "Shelly" to me.

Nice something-extra touch: "Shell(e)y's Stuff" on the side of the box. It obviously required a little extra effort--I've no idea how much--but it isn't obnoxious like, say, some Hollywood there-just-for-the-hell-of-it special effect.

Oy, here we go. I knew the lightweight stuff wouldn't last long--happy moments are ever briefer and rarer at Wapsi Square--and I'm not complaining. It just takes a moment to...brace oneself.

*inhales deeply*
*pauses*
*exhales*

Okay. Bring.

EDIT: Oops, I answered TPK's question. It's pretty clearly "Shelly's STUFF" to me...

Oh dear...
I think this is gonna bring back lots of memories to Shelly, and unfortunately she doesn't seems to have that many good ones from her youth...

Yeah, that's about the size of it. Eminem tried Cleaning Out His Closet and it wasn't pretty. I think Shelly's will be even worse than that... especially considering the fact that the drawing under scrutiny seems to be a girl sitting alone, with no one combing her hair.

I suddenly got an image of one of the others dropping by, searching the house, and finding Shelly in a corner sobbing...

You'll also notice that the little girl in the picture has short hair and is crying. Definitely Shelly after her mom passed. Poor thing. I just want to hug her right now.

THIS is much more what Wapsi is about in my mind! I'm so happy! :D :D :D

Who's BunBun?

And why is the little critter's face half white/half black? Could it be something to do with the totem here? Just a thought. I still can't see that thing very clearly.

Shelly looks fantastic in that first panel, though! :)

BunBun is a rabbit from the comic "Sluggy Freelance", no that is not him.

All I'll say is it has everything to do with that totem.

GOD HELP ME: I am not only about to quote Star Trek, I am about to quote from one of the movies almost everyone HATES.

Damn you, AP, for bringing this burden upon me! (*kidding*)

Cap'n Kirk, in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, said, not wrote:Damn it, Bones, you're a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can't be taken away with a wave of a magic wand. They're the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain.

...Oooooooooeeee, I needs me a shower.

(This of course is why I think the Scary Little Girl in Shelley's Head wants to drive Heather away--or worse. If Heather takes away The Loss, she might take away everything else about Mommy.)

Ahhh... a quick break from the tunnel, and then back into the blackness. This'll be interesting. I half-suspect it'll end in heartbreak, as it started.

The first thing I thought of looking at the totem, was the concept of yin and yang.

The black has a spot of white, the white a spot of black. Evil and good. one creates, and destroys, the other, but cannot be without the other. Neither is pure in reality, as well.

A basic delusion in Buddhism is the concept of dualism. Up and down, right and wrong, me and you. They're the same thing. You and I freeze reality into these extremes.

What is faced will liberate you. What is not will destroy you.

The totem is indeed the pivot of the story arc. ;)

You know . . . I must have seen that strip at least half a dozen times and I did not notice that thing in the bottom next to the angry, screaming girl until just now when it was pointed out to me!

Amazingly subtle! :)

This time I don't care if I'm alone:

I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy! :P

This is what keeps me coming back! This comic works on so many levels:
psychological, supernatural, natural, sometimes painfully real.

There is so much depth here you could drown!

:Slaps forehead.:

Whoah!

. . . . .

Verrry sneaky (and a little mean) using Monica as a distraction to make us (well, really me) forget about that.

This is getting kinda scary.

Reading down this thread, going to the various links, I was about to post a question -- "What totem?" And even after it was pointed out, I'm tempted to ask that. I recall wondering what that dark globby pattern was next to the screaming figure, but dismissed it at the time (big mistake, I now realize -- there is no random ink in Wapsi Square), and in the first couple re-readings. Too subtle for me.

But luckily such knowledge is unnecessary for the enjoyment of the strip!

Shelly is Comanche, right? Being here in AZ, lots of totems, like Hopi animal carvings. I used to sell them for the old Nature Company back in the early '90's. I'm not surprised they're in her memories of childhood.

So she had a vision, eh? A premonition? From the Native friends I've made through the years and stuff witnessed firsthand, this isn't strange or fourth-wall at all. ;)
